Just saw a video comparing Breath of the Wild frame rate between docked Switch and undocked. Surprisingly, the undocked version looks and runs better. This sucks for people who were looking for a home gaming system in this thing. I shortly found out that the dock has barely any hardware in it and that ALL of the power resides within the small tablet.
I may sound mad, but I'm not. Just disappointed, I will enjoy the Switch especially near the holidays when it has a good library. I just wish Nintendo was more honest with the marketing. It's not a hybrid, it's a handheld system that can be docked and played on TV.
Also, this also makes it clear why they're pushing indies so hard too.
>It's not a hybrid, it's a handheld system that can be docked and played on TV.
Thats the thinking I've always maintained with it and the reason why I bought it. I'm more into handhelds than consoles and one that can hook up to the TV if I wanted it to was perfect. I agree though that it should have been marketed as you said, but I doubt it's really going to be an issue for most.
Liam Ross
Well duh. The dock is just a USB-C to HDMI converter. It doesn't provide any extra processing power.
Isaac Anderson
Don't know. We'll probably know by the end of the week or something.
I was prepared to have a great home gaming experience with the Switch. It's gonna be rough suddenly changing my mindset. I'll get over it though. This thing clearly isn't competing with Sony and Microsoft.
Yeah, I was shocked when I heard. Looking at images now, it's not really that big either. The entire system looked bigger in trailers for some reason.
Caleb Bell
That's what I've been saying!
Camden Richardson
>. Surprisingly, the undocked version looks and runs better.
>suddenly has half the performance demands >runs better Thinking isn't your forte it's ok
Liam Robinson
>it's a handheld system that can be docked and played on TV. That makes it a hybrid
Jaxon Collins
Docked runs at 900p. That's not good at all in 2017. Hopefully this isn't an actual Switch issue, maybe it has to do with porting. The Wii U and Switch architecture after all, is very different.
I expect other games like Mario and Sonic to run at 1080 while docked. The only reason I'm not filled with rage due to the deceitful marketing, is because I already own a PS4 which does home gaming fine. I can live with the Switch being a handheld first and foremost, dock gameplay still needs to improve way more though.
Hudson Gonzalez
>still available pretty much anywhere in Burgerland >sony europe price dropped the PS4 to 200€, 250€ with Horizon, available literally everywhere in many countries >not sure about japan
Seems like it's going to be another Wii U from here.
Kevin Murphy
What about Nintendo referring to it as a home console over and over again, when the definitive version (so far) seems to be handheld?
My phone can also display visuals on TV, doesn't mean it's a hybrid.
Kayden Campbell
Smartphones are a hybrid of a telephone, internet device and music player
Brody Morris
You're reaching.
David Perez
>Update smart phones are a hybrid of a PDA and a cellphone.
Bentley Wood
>I shortly found out that the dock has barely any hardware in it How didn't you know this when the hardware was revealed? How did you not do any research before? >I will enjoy the Switch especially near the holidays when it has a good library. Mario (MAYBE), Xenoblade (if you care about those, I don't), Splatoon "2" - still not a great library or investment
Zachary Perez
>>sony europe price dropped the PS4 to 200€, 250€ with Horizon, available literally everywhere in many countries
Fucking hell, this is true, I saw it yesterday on Amazon Italy, unfortunately it got sold out in less than a day and now it's back to 270 for the base console.
Joshua Mitchell
>anywhere
literally impossible to find one right now
Henry Jenkins
tfw every sign points to the switch being a wii u successor except for the handheld aspect which makes everyone call it a 3ds successor
Christian Torres
>meanwhile, on amazon.com there are 500 sellers scamming you on the prize >tfw literally everyone bought the switch to rip off nintoddlers
Austin Parker
I'm actually completely ok with this. My tv shit and I was lamenting having to use it portable which I thought was inferior. Turns out portable mode is great! Battery life could be better but I use it around the house anyway so no not a problem.
Honestly, this console is far from perfect but at this point it looks like it is perfect for me specifically.
Nicholas Jones
Burger here, I just checked and the Switch is in stock at my local Walmart (2 minute drive). Best Buy had no stock though, oddly.
Charles Lewis
Some of us warned you. You didn't listen. Some of us have seen consoles come and go for years. We can see a con from a mile away.
Lucas Murphy
a joy-con
Connor King
Don't give a shit honestly, as long as it gets a following in Japan similar to how the vita was with a bunch of niche shit on it I'll be happy, since no region lock and shit. That's not to say I want it to become Vita 2.0 but unless Sony releases another handheld then I think it can fill that role
Kayden Edwards
>Nintendo, why does doubling the resolution make my performance worse
Jayden Turner
>handheld >2 hour battery >plastic screen that scratches with light use
Robert Hill
A system that has Sonic, Mario, Splatoon 2, Zelda, ARMS and Xenoblade (which it will have by the end of the year). Is totally worth the investment.
Tyler Reyes
allow me to meme text this thread as well
>handheld >2 hour battery life >has a fucking big ass vent that shits out hot air
Blake Robinson
It's like people forget that 2 hours+ is the time you can specifically Zelda and that it can actually last much longer.
You also don't have to scratch the screen if you put it in the dock safely.
Evan Sanchez
>A system that has Sonic, Mario, Splatoon 2, Zelda, ARMS and Xenoblade (which it will have by the end of the year). Is totally worth the investment.
A system that has a horrifying bug in it is literally not worth the investment until the non shitty versions come out.
>It's like people forget that 2 hours+ is the time you can specifically Zelda and that it can actually last much longer.
It's like you forgot that the reason it lasts 2 hours+ is because the Switch's battery is tiny as all fuck.
Nathaniel Jones
>ARMS This is a throwaway game that will be completely forgotten by 2018.
Jason Bailey
>I just wish Nintendo was more honest with the marketing. It's not a hybrid, it's a handheld system that can be docked and played on TV. Honestly, that's all that needs to be said to know what it's aiming for. When somebody says it's a hybrid, you already know that it's aiming for the lowest possible point in the amount of power it has so that right there tells you all you need to know. By default, it's a handheld that can be upscaled to fit a TV. If you bought a switch and wound up disappointed by that, then you're an absolute idiot for not understanding what you're getting into. Personally, I love the thing, but I was expecting this much from the get go and was already getting what I figured was coming so there's not really any room to be disappointed.
Zachary Peterson
Because there has never been derped units at launch for any other system, oh wait, there has. And you can simply turn it in and get a new one.
You also ignored the part where I say specially say "end of the year"
>until the non shitty version comes out Yeah, I doubt it'll be during for the rest of the year. Learn to read and stop being so angst.
You can criticize a product without downplaying everything about it. When you do that, it gives fanboys a reason to not take your criticism seriously and simply call you a hater and a Sonygger or Xbot.
Notice how none of those were thrown at me even when I blatantly called Nintendo out for their deceitful marketing? Take notes.
Jeremiah Jackson
It's literally how steve jobs pitched it
Luke Walker
Not with the competitive potential it's showing and the existence of traditional controls.
Jordan Hughes
>competitive potential You could even say it's hobby-grade competitive esports, can't go wrong with that!
Jonathan Phillips
What the fuck else is there to play? Everyone bought this thing specifically for Zelda. Who the fuck in their right mind is going to play 6 hours of 1 2 Switch?
Jonathan Allen
>You can criticize a product without downplaying everything about it. When you do that, it gives fanboys a reason to not take your criticism seriously and simply call you a hater and a Sonygger or Xbot.
Okay. I'll admit I'm hyped for the new Mario, but that defect and the Joycon desync shit I think could easily cost Nintendo sales. The crahing console was simply the icing on the shitty launch cake. Nintendo could be risking their entire hardware business with this thing, and if it flops, they could actually stop making hardware.
Also Sup Forums would shitpost about it forever.
Hunter White
That's not entirely true.
Hudson Perry
Of course some games will last longer. And for things like the Virtual Console and indie games (or more extensive emulation in the event it's hacked) the Switch's battery will probably be more than adequate. But a couple hours for one of its major titles is a bit paltry. Sure you can play while it's plugged in (terrible port placement aside) but that's not exactly praiseworthy.
I don't think it's all that bad, but it's not excellent.
Nathan Price
Just because Zelda is the only quality game at launch doesn't mean the Switch magically has a 2 hour battery limit.
Camden Reyes
I agree competently
Caleb Ross
Completely, I meant.
Ethan Long
The port placement is literally perfect, unless you use the meme tablet mode.
Luke Cruz
if you don't listen to this person you're a bigot
Julian Morris
how is that a feel?
William Gonzalez
best buy wagecuck here 17 returns so far but we sold out.
Anthony Peterson
it's both
Aaron Cooper
The dock really should have processing if they are going to call it a hybrid.
It's a better PS Vita with an HDMI out.
Ayden Robinson
The hybrid part comes from being able to be played at home and on the go, as well as having software designed for both types of play including games that have never been on a handheld.
Jonathan Diaz
Switch is just a handheld WiiU. Don't expect much in terms of good visuals.
Charles Walker
>It's a better PS Vita with an HDMI out. Vita had better build parts and screen.
Charles Butler
Depends on how you define good visuals.
Bentley Martinez
Funnily enough, I was torn between getting a Vita TV and a Switch. I chose neither, because of Sony's proprietary memory bullshit turning a $45 mini-console into a $200 investment, and because I don't trust Nintendo at all after the Wii U.
Julian Smith
But as a handheld it is too big to be portable, shit battery, can't charge in kickstand mode and lacks functionality old ones had like web browser.
Instead of a handheld you cab plug into the tv, it is a shit console that turns into a handheld
Luke Miller
On a technical front? Basic anti-aliasing, and texture filtering that isn't trilinear, steady 30fps.
Caleb Sanchez
So what I gather is that this system isn't as good as it was marketed to be and is more of a glorified handheld than a home console. And that BotW is more of a 7/10 game and not a 10/10 like a lot of blind fanboys claim.
Levi Sanders
nintendo gmae is choclit chip cookie
Bentley Murphy
4 years of hype and a 2 year delay does things to you
Nicholas Nguyen
>But as a handheld it is too big to be portable It's too big to be a pocket portable, as fitting in your pocket has never been a metric for whether something is portable or not.
The original Gameboy was a tight fit at best with the rare exception being shit like Jncos. Same for 3DS XL I believe.
Kevin Adams
Bulky is easier to deal with than being very long and wide, a screen that easily scratches, not being able to go near phones and a load of other stuff, having controllers that reportedly come loose and shit battery life
Plus when you have to go back to the original gameboy to say it is okay you have issues.
Adrian Rodriguez
I cant tell if people are being retarded or not
Literally from day one with tegra being used, everyone should have known where this was going to land. Dont be fucking stupid, do your research next time like a smart consumer.
Jackson Morales
>a screen that easily scratched What screen isn't easy to scratch? The screen protector industry has done nothing but boom in the era of Smart phones and is expected to do nothing but continue to grow.
Wyatt Bailey
Most don't scratch in a day just from intended use yet we are seeing that here.
Twice you had to ignore the majority of issues and focus on one, even then your argument was but it isn't that bad! Too many basic flaws, it is not good as a handheld
Parker Jones
>web browser I actually used my PSP's browser back in the day because it was a fairly decent browser relative to other handheld browsers at the time, but why on Earth would you care to use a browser on a handheld gaming device now? Just get an actual all-purpose tablet or use your phone.
I get that browsers are standard now, but the lack of one hardly seems important.
Adam Anderson
>Most don't scratch in a day just from intended use yet we are seeing that here. They very easily can. That's why the very first thing they ask you when you buy a new phone is "would you like a screen protector?".
Going without one and not accumulating scratches is a showcase of your ability to baby the damn thing and not the quality of the screen itself.
Lincoln Wood
Also whats this normie shit I keep seeing about tasting the cartridges? Are nintendrones that retarded?
Grayson Russell
>PEOPLE STILL THOUGHT THAT PLAYING IT IN DOCKED MODE WOULD UNLOCK SOME SECRET EXTRA PROCESSING POWER
I TOLD YOU FUCKING DUMBASS FAGGOTS HAHAHAHAHAH
ENJOY YOUR FUCKING GIMPED CONSOLE
MAYBE NEXT TIME NINTENDO CAN USE THE TIME SPENT IMPLEMENTED AMIIBO SUPPORT, WAGGLE CONTROLS, TOUCHSCREEN CONTROLS, PORTABILITY, AND DUMBASS "HD RUMBLE" TO ACTUALLY WORK ON MAKING A GOOD CONSOLE
Zachary Bennett
>mfw all my real friends are hyped and love it >all the comments I see on facebook are praising it >Sup Forums says its a flop but every normie I know is more than happy with it
Hunter Murphy
Youre telling me people didnt know it was a handheld from the start?
Dylan Green
Why pay for a system plus online for less functionality? Especially when you solution is buy a similar but also expensive item
In fact being tablet-like means it is even more standard for the switch to have it yet it fails
>They very easily can Your replies have now come down to nuh uh pls give nintendo more money. You couldn't even respond to half the points made and even if you could it would be it's okay ignore all the points
Henry Reyes
>it's a handheld system that can be docked and played on TV.
So a hybrid?
Landon Thompson
Its all over the place here in Aus. I'm thinking about getting one tomorrow.
I do want one, but some of the issues it seems to have are deterring me a little.
Ryan Butler
>You couldn't even respond to half the points made Because I don't care about the other points. Not that hard to understand. I don't have a Switch and I don't care if you like the damn thing. I just addressed the one point that seemed completely asinine in passing.
Luke Torres
I'm saying the "solution" is something you very likely already have, or that the vast majority of people already have. Like I said, it's an odd exclusion (were they worried about vulnerabilities through the browser maybe?) but not one I think is terrible. Unless you are really hungry for the few games it has right now or simply don't mind spending money I'd wait for the inevitable hardware revision.
Jason Scott
Do Nintendo actually do hardware revisions?
Like I know they do it with their handhelds, but what about home consoles? Nintendo hasn't seemed to have made up their mind about which they want it to be.
Levi Davis
>My psp is a home console because I can get a cheap peripheral and plug it into the TV!
the answer to your question is nein
Logan Anderson
>Because I don't care about the other points. Because they prove your point wrong, it is a bad handheld and your best answer to issues is buy stuff
>is something you very likely already have I don't have a tablet, if I did it would not on me constantly yet this nintendo tablet lacks basic shit. Why am I paying a premium for a product with less functionality that requires others expensive products for features including voice chat? That isn't a sensible decision
Christian Bennett
They do, but it's weirdly common for it to be a DOWNgrade rather than an upgrade. NES had a toploader which was nice enough, SNES had a mini version that had some small downside I can't remember off the top of my head, dunno about N64, Gamecube removed component cable compatibility for some fucktarded reason, wii removed gamecube BC (and then made the mini which also removed wifi)
Camden Brooks
people only thought that because ninty filed a patent that did that
Hunter Powell
the psp wasn't advertised as "a home console you can take on the go"
Jaxon Ramirez
>it is a bad handheld Again, I don't care. Are you really this dense?
Andrew Watson
This was predicted years ago.
Wyatt Ross
Yes but the question is "does a handheld system that can be docked and played on TV" with no actual increased specs being offered by the connection between hardware and tv qualify the handheld to be considered a home console, or even a hybrid
and the answer is no. Nintendo can advertise whatever they want, the reality is the Switch is a literal handheld that can also output to a monitor via a bulky enclosed "cable".
Robert Lopez
sold out everywhere over here in Europe, although, the quantity was limited from what i've heard
Ethan Kelly
Did that change the resolution?
Nathaniel Morales
But you probably have a phone with a good browser. Nintendo's online policy and voice chat bullshit is a completely different can of worms since they're actually central to playing games in a way a browser is not. I'm pretty confident it will see a revision given its handheld status. But if you're not and really want what little its library offers right now (and don't mind the technical complaints), by all means. I doubt it's that bad. I just usually avoid consoles at launch. The GBA and DS being exceptions (that also saw improved revisions). Given the thinness of the library I'm willing to wait and see, and if you're feeling reluctant it's probably not a bad call for you either.
Aaron Morales
The absolute madman. He was pretty much right.
Eli Clark
>It's like people forget that 2 hours+ is the time you can specifically Zelda and that it can actually last much longer.
you mean if people don't play games on it?
Henry Diaz
BOTW is a 10/10 game though
Thomas Foster
These things are selling for 450$+ usd and are impossible to find in retail. Nice bait though.
Jaxson Roberts
>Nintendo could be risking their entire hardware business with this thing, and if it flops, they could actually stop making hardware.
and that would be the best thing they ever did.
Daniel Ross
Why the fuck do they insist on making shit that is sure to flop?
Wyatt Hughes
>I don't care >makes thread defending the switch and argues with people
>But you probably have a phone Maybe I don't, and if I do it harms the switch anyway . But I would still be buying a tablet-like device with considerable less functionality than any tablet. This time it makes more sense than ever for a console to have a web browser, because all fucking tablets do
Nicholas Brooks
Yeah just use it for youtub....I mean netfli......web brow.....
Hudson Brown
>I get that browsers are standard now.
that is exactly why it is important, people are going to be expecting things that are the norm and when they are not there, that causes disappointment and bad reviews which hurt nintendo
Evan Flores
>and that would be the best thing they ever did.
Not entirely. You're going for another monkey paw situation. Seeing their track record, Nintendo is more likely to:
>Flock to mobileshit and rehash the shit out of every franchise they have
Instead of:
>Develop on competing hardware and continue to develop promising titles and sequels like Mario Odyssey
I'd prefer option 2, but let's be real here.
Chase Nelson
give it a week or two when people have had a chance to actually live with it
Jackson Allen
>and if I do it harms the switch anyway Hah, touche.
I still don't think the lack of a browser is all that egregious, though. It's not like I've ever used my 3DS's browser.
