Tfw you realize the Nintendo Switch is a literal handheld

Just saw a video comparing Breath of the Wild frame rate between docked Switch and undocked. Surprisingly, the undocked version looks and runs better. This sucks for people who were looking for a home gaming system in this thing.
I shortly found out that the dock has barely any hardware in it and that ALL of the power resides within the small tablet.

I may sound mad, but I'm not. Just disappointed, I will enjoy the Switch especially near the holidays when it has a good library. I just wish Nintendo was more honest with the marketing. It's not a hybrid, it's a handheld system that can be docked and played on TV.

Also, this also makes it clear why they're pushing indies so hard too.

Thats the thinking I've always maintained with it and the reason why I bought it. I'm more into handhelds than consoles and one that can hook up to the TV if I wanted it to was perfect. I agree though that it should have been marketed as you said, but I doubt it's really going to be an issue for most.

Well duh. The dock is just a USB-C to HDMI converter. It doesn't provide any extra processing power.

I was prepared to have a great home gaming experience with the Switch. It's gonna be rough suddenly changing my mindset. I'll get over it though. This thing clearly isn't competing with Sony and Microsoft.

Yeah, I was shocked when I heard. Looking at images now, it's not really that big either. The entire system looked bigger in trailers for some reason.

Docked runs at 900p. That's not good at all in 2017. Hopefully this isn't an actual Switch issue, maybe it has to do with porting. The Wii U and Switch architecture after all, is very different.

I expect other games like Mario and Sonic to run at 1080 while docked. The only reason I'm not filled with rage due to the deceitful marketing, is because I already own a PS4 which does home gaming fine. I can live with the Switch being a handheld first and foremost, dock gameplay still needs to improve way more though.

I'm actually completely ok with this. My tv shit and I was lamenting having to use it portable which I thought was inferior. Turns out portable mode is great! Battery life could be better but I use it around the house anyway so no not a problem.

Honestly, this console is far from perfect but at this point it looks like it is perfect for me specifically.

Burger here, I just checked and the Switch is in stock at my local Walmart (2 minute drive). Best Buy had no stock though, oddly.

Honestly, that's all that needs to be said to know what it's aiming for. When somebody says it's a hybrid, you already know that it's aiming for the lowest possible point in the amount of power it has so that right there tells you all you need to know. By default, it's a handheld that can be upscaled to fit a TV. If you bought a switch and wound up disappointed by that, then you're an absolute idiot for not understanding what you're getting into. Personally, I love the thing, but I was expecting this much from the get go and was already getting what I figured was coming so there's not really any room to be disappointed.

Okay. I'll admit I'm hyped for the new Mario, but that defect and the Joycon desync shit I think could easily cost Nintendo sales. The crahing console was simply the icing on the shitty launch cake. Nintendo could be risking their entire hardware business with this thing, and if it flops, they could actually stop making hardware.

That's not entirely true.

Of course some games will last longer. And for things like the Virtual Console and indie games (or more extensive emulation in the event it's hacked) the Switch's battery will probably be more than adequate. But a couple hours for one of its major titles is a bit paltry. Sure you can play while it's plugged in (terrible port placement aside) but that's not exactly praiseworthy.

I don't think it's all that bad, but it's not excellent.

Just because Zelda is the only quality game at launch doesn't mean the Switch magically has a 2 hour battery limit.

The dock really should have processing if they are going to call it a hybrid.

It's a better PS Vita with an HDMI out.

The hybrid part comes from being able to be played at home and on the go, as well as having software designed for both types of play including games that have never been on a handheld.

Switch is just a handheld WiiU. Don't expect much in terms of good visuals.

Funnily enough, I was torn between getting a Vita TV and a Switch.
I chose neither, because of Sony's proprietary memory bullshit turning a $45 mini-console into a $200 investment, and because I don't trust Nintendo at all after the Wii U.

But as a handheld it is too big to be portable, shit battery, can't charge in kickstand mode and lacks functionality old ones had like web browser.

On a technical front? Basic anti-aliasing, and texture filtering that isn't trilinear, steady 30fps.

So what I gather is that this system isn't as good as it was marketed to be and is more of a glorified handheld than a home console. And that BotW is more of a 7/10 game and not a 10/10 like a lot of blind fanboys claim.

The original Gameboy was a tight fit at best with the rare exception being shit like Jncos. Same for 3DS XL I believe.

Bulky is easier to deal with than being very long and wide, a screen that easily scratches, not being able to go near phones and a load of other stuff, having controllers that reportedly come loose and shit battery life

Plus when you have to go back to the original gameboy to say it is okay you have issues.

I'm saying the "solution" is something you very likely already have, or that the vast majority of people already have. Like I said, it's an odd exclusion (were they worried about vulnerabilities through the browser maybe?) but not one I think is terrible.

NES had a toploader which was nice enough, SNES had a mini version that had some small downside I can't remember off the top of my head, dunno about N64, Gamecube removed component cable compatibility for some fucktarded reason, wii removed gamecube BC (and then made the mini which also removed wifi)

But you probably have a phone with a good browser. Nintendo's online policy and voice chat bullshit is a completely different can of worms since they're actually central to playing games in a way a browser is not.
I'm pretty confident it will see a revision given its handheld status. But if you're not and really want what little its library offers right now (and don't mind the technical complaints), by all means. I doubt it's that bad. I just usually avoid consoles at launch. The GBA and DS being exceptions (that also saw improved revisions). Given the thinness of the library I'm willing to wait and see, and if you're feeling reluctant it's probably not a bad call for you either.
