>best game in the series
>don't localize it
fucking why Capcom
Ace Attorney doesn't sell very well in the West. Capcom needed a LOT of convincing to localise AA5, and even that was digital only. Combine that with the fact that GK2 was trapped on a dead console, and it's a reasonable decision. I would've loved an official eshop 3DS port, but the fan translation's on a similar level of quality to Capcom's own team anyway.
>Debeste will never return as a prosecutor in the mainline series
At first Capcom complained something along the lines of "Investigations 1 didn't sell enough compared to Okamiden" (which is stupid to compare), later the reason changed to "The team behind Investigations 2 was busy with another game, so it couldn't be localized". You never know with Crapcom, really.
>Ace Attorney doesn't sell very well in the West
You mean "Ace Attorney without Phoenix"
I enjoyed it but the mastermind actually having killed someone felt like a bit of a cop-out to me narrative-wise, I know that he needed to be caught somehow but I loved the whole puppet-master thing he had going on. Him going to jail for kidnapping, tampering with a corpse and so on would've been fine since he willingly gave in by the end anyway,
If AA1 had less clunky/backtracking-heavy investigation segments it'd be my favorite AA, as it is it & AAI2 are my favorites.
AA spin-offs don't sell that well even in Japan letalone in the west, and it was released at a time where Capcom of America weren't sure whether to keep localizing the mainline series period.
Logic Chess is stupid and lazy.
Only thing wrong with it was that they didn't actually write dialogue for the wrong choices, as far as I can tell. Mechanics-wise it basically does the "observe a character's behavior" thing better than Percieve does.
In terms of the circumstances of how it's used sometimes it is a bit odd though, sure.
>AAI1 worst one in the series
>AAI2 Debeste one in the series
How is this even possible?
The mastermind did nothing wrong
What makes it the best? I assume it must be because the cases are the best in the series?
Even if they do not want to release it physically I do not understand why they don't release it digitally. All they have to do is translate a bunch of text. No way they can't make a profit on that.
So...how is the Great Ace Attorney translation coming along?
It was a nice concept but it was too easy
it's not possible because AA4 is the worst
>this game first got translated
>excited to play because heard good things
>finish first case, on second, and decide to look at v thread because assume nobody has played that far yet
>blatant post saying Simon is the mastermind, but not in spoiler tags
>ruins the whole game, lose all interest in ace attorney and have to drag myself through the game over several months because my will to play it disappears
That guy is the one guy I'd genuinely kill if I knew who it was
Why the translation doesn't work on my r4?
I just see random symbols.
It'll be done sometime within the next decade.
Come the fuck on. That was one of the weaker ones but still better than AAI
no, AAI was good up until the final case
AA4 is boring right from the 2nd case.
AAI was boring pretty much all the way through.
agree to disagree
The only things I disliked about AAI was the third case being a slog and Gumshoe being characterized oddly. It was okay otherwise I thought. Don't really get the complaints about it being boring, feels like the same people are complaining about how dumb and over-the-top the other games get too.
The thing with AAI isn't that it's bad, it's just average all around. It's best case is the fourth one, and the final case is great up until it drags on for too long. Everything else is okay.
AA4's best case is the first one. Everything else is awful afterwards.
Kay getting her own game as a Defense Attorney when?
characterized oddly?
Too much of a cowardly lion-type character, he wasn't really like that in the main series. Or atleast it was as pronounced a character trait as it was in that game.
I thought the worst case was 3 too, and I didn't mind EXTRATERRITORIAL RIGHTS, all in all I thought it was a good game although it can't compare to 2.
It'd fit the whole yatagarasu thing but at the end of AAI2 she says that she doesn't want to just follow in her dad's footsteps anymore and help Edgeworth & Gumshoe out in her own way. So maybe she drops the Great Thief schtick and does something else, who knows though since we're probably never seeing any of the AAI series cast again.
DD is the worst Ace Attorney game. Investigations was a breath of fresh air after how ANIME the series was getting. Apollo Justice could have been looked at more fondly if they ever referenced it again, but since they didn't it remains the black sheep of the series. Most of the problems with the modern series come from DD, the fucking stupid anime cutscenes, how Phoenix still acts like an incompetent neanderthal, character designs getting more and more over-the-top.
Case 5 was a mistake
>Hah we cornered you
>Muh extraterritorial rights
>We cornered you again, confess
>No lol gotta catch my plane
>We cornered you for the third time, admit your guilt
>No
>Cornered again, will you just admit your guilt?
>Lel no
This is literally the last part of the case
Gumshoe becomes more of a punching bag with each game he appears in (though he always pulls through in the end). In AAI2 he largely has his shit together but I feel like that's only because he was mostly in the background in that game.
Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies are my bottom two, so I won't argue with that either way, they're both awful for different reasons
Is AA6 good? Still haven't gotten to it, despite it being out for god knows how long.
>tfw physical AA releases never again
I didn't mind it though they probably could've cut it by a few cross-examinations and still got the point across. Oldbag was actually more grating than the mastermind was in that bit for me.
I did like the extraterritorial rights fake-out that the sequel's first case has, where it seemed like that whole scenario would happen again and Edgeworth just tears that shit down immediately.
A lot better than AA4 and AA5, but still has some problems.
Solid entry, I have it square in the middle.
Yes, Rayfa a cute.
It fits the end of the both games where Kay says that she needs a group of people to be the Yatagarasu with her. A prosecutor, a a detective , and a Great Thief (which is supposed to be defense attorney). If Investigations is ever referenced again, Kay will probably get into a situation which causes her to want to be an attorney and then she'd probably work under Shields.
As much as I love Ace Attorney, it's still more fun to actually get your hands dirty than use your brain to solve things.
Yes, it's top 3 AA games for me
So you're saying I should become a real lawyer?
I really love the first AA for Rise from the Ashes case.
That was fucking god tier plus Turnabout Goodbyes was really great too.
I like Rise from the Ashes as well but when the game came out, people shit on that case so much.
It IS slow to get started, there's no denying that, but once the SL-9 Incident becomes part of the story, it gets good.
As far as I remember, it's still the longest case in any AA games right?
I had some trouble with it too
I only managed to get it to work in my shitty flashcard after browsing some forum for hours
>spoiler
It was even self-defense in the end, so I really don't get why he was arrested for murdering the guy.
I believe so, mostly since the later games deliberately were limiting themselves on length so as not to drag.
Because of the nature of Rise From the Ashes, I think they were essentially trying to make an entire game in a single case (kind of like what the DLC cases did in Ace Attorney 5 and 6).
I liked 4-2 though, and 4-4 is interesting up until Phoenix's shit breaks all momentum the case has
It's less that it's slow and more that there's a lot of backtracking in the Investigation, even moreso than AA1's actual cases and that's the main criticism that game gets even. I dunno if they were trying to emulate the feel of AA1's cases or what.
Also Angel Starr gets away with talking too much shit in the courtroom despite clearly being shown to be untrustworthy, which got a bit annoying after a while.
It's also weird that the forensic stuffs were added just for a single case.
>and 4-4 is interesting up until Phoenix's shit breaks all momentum the case has
The case starts with his shit though. Also that was probably the best part of the game despite how silly it was plot-wise, confronting Kristoph in the cell was more tense than pretty much any individual part of AA5 or 6.
The "secret" behind Misham's paintings basically meaning nothing was odd though.
Do you not know the story behind Rise From the Ashes? It wasn't in the original Gyakuten Saiban.
I unironically love I-5.
>Complex as fuck murder method
>Final villain who actually tries at all costs to escape
>Best red herring side character (Colias)
>Shih-na
I think they could have tightened it a little bit, but its crazy how much more complex it is than earlier cases like in AA1.
I played the trilogy on the 3ds.
>debeste game ever
By the time Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney arrived on DS, the series was actually four years old to the day (the US launch date for PW:AA and the Japanese launch date for Gyakuten Saiban 1 on GBA were the same date, four years apart). The fifth case was added as a demonstration of how they could use the DS's technology (mic and touch screen) for future Ace Attorney games. The team that did Rise From the Ashes were the ones fully responsible for helming Gyakuten Saiban 4/Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, which have several DS-specific features.
It's sad that the DS releases of AA2 and AA3 never received additional cases, imo
WHO'S THE BEST WAIFU AND WHY IS IT RON?
It's okay. Personally I thought that case 5 was too much over the top and I couldn't get emotionally invested in any of the characters because they were either too perfect or too cartoonishly evil for me.
Raise your hands who thought there was a problem with your DS when this guy just looked straight at the screen unmoving for like half a minute
Eh. AA3 was long enough, and any case after 2-4 would have just been worse. They could have inserted a case into the middle of AA2, but then you have 5 standalone cases in one game.
The existence of the DS versions is entirely for the English market. Without that they would have probably proceeded straight to GS4 without rereleasing the other games on DS ahead of that (maybe after GS4 but most likely not before).
The Japanese versions of all of the original trilogy games shipped with English dialogue as a secondary language option (thanks to my impatience, I have the Japanese versions of 2 and 3 because they released over there before they released here, despite having completed scripts).
Top 3 for me as well. Last case probably has my favorite moment/twist in series history, which I did not expect to find in a new game.
Ruined by 2 horrible characters.
A moment to remember the greatest hero in Dual Destinies
I didn't mind Larry in that one, got a chuckle out of Edgeworth asking him for autograph when dressed as Steel Samurai and then his reaction to finding out who was inside of the costume.
Oldbag was a lot worse.
If you replay Rise From the Ashes after playing the rest of the trilogy, there are several references to later games from the series because it was created a good while after the third game. English-speaking players didn't get these (because at the time the other two games had yet to release in English) but Japanese players would have.
The Blue Badger is a reference to Maggey's sweater in 2-1, a small picture of Maggey can be found inside Gumshoe's evidence locker, Tres Bien is mentioned by Gumshoe at one point, and Edgeworth's suit from 3-4 is hung on the wall in his office. There may be more I'm missing too.
Edgeworth's suit is the best part of Investigations as well
But user, that suit is from AA3.
>The "secret" behind Misham's paintings basically meaning nothing was odd though.
It was foreshadowing the writers' future obsession with giving Apollo some sort of deep personal connection to every single case he gets involved with.
Just FYI, if you haven't already you should check out the Phoenix Wright musical
>Going on Sup Forums to talk about a game you haven't finished when you care about spoilers.
No one to blame but yourself.
>Justine Courtney
C A R L O S
>that
>Carlos-tier
I take it you haven't played SoJ yet?
I-5 is genuinely my favorite case
make sure you check out aviary attorney
only the first half of the last case is decent. everything else is so terrible I had to force myself through it
Speaking of puns, I'm ashamed that I didn't realized the pun in Simon Keyes's name until somebody pointed that out.
Elaborate, I'm not seeing the pun, either.
How do people with tastes this bad populate the earth?
Shy Monkey(s).
Simon Keyes -> "Shy Monkeys", since he's shy and a monkey trainer.
May or may not also be related to Simon Says and/or the fact that he is a key person to four of the five cases in the game.
Oh shit I remember Tres Bien being mentioned in Rise.
There is another thing to his name
Simon says
That's mostly meant to be Blackquill's pun.
Indeed, Gumshoe got the short end of the stick in Investigations, being a retard for the sake of it rather than his typical shenanigans.
Phoenix was ahead of the curve in AA4, but that was because he had 7 years ot think and recount every single detail. His transition could've been smoother, but I think he wasn't that bad in 5(other than the noticable favor for using "assert"), and felt just right in 6.
God damn, how did I never figure that one out. Thanks, anons.
His animations are also mostly "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil"
I got the trilogy and Spirit of Justice on freeshop. Are those the only Ace Attorney games I need?
Don't be a faggot and play them all.
No, play the games in release order faggot.
Also, skip Trilogy on 3DS, it's a mediocre port with bad re-done sprites. Play the DS originals (might as well get a flashcart for all of them and AAI2's fan translation)
Best game since AAI2 easily
Worse than AA5, AA3 and AAI2
Better than the rest, on par with AA1
>AA5
>top 3
In my opinion, yeah.
Why? I like the game, but can't see how anyone can put it above 3, I2, or 6. AA6 in particular improves almost everything:
>actual investigations that aren't linear as fuck
>being able to investigate every area, offering tons of more dialog
>trials aren't piss easy
>better cases
>overall theme of the game is better, no "power of friendship" bullshit.
Better overall cases, a much better prosecutor, more memorable music and better distribution in terms of cases per Attorney (Apollo has 1.5, Athena has 1.5, Phoenix had 2, 3 if you count DLC)...
I never liked investigations that much and I'm not in for the satisfaction of solving the trials themselves since for the most part they're easy regardless of the entry. Not a fan of Apollo's forced backstory either.
>trials aren't piss easy
I thought it was still pretty easy, it was definitely less handhold-y than AA5 though.
>better cases
I think AA6 has better characters but worse mysteries than AA5, honestly.
Actually in that regard I think it's weird that the people who prop up AA3 as being the best don't like AA6 more either, it has similar strengths and weaknesses to it.
AAI1-3 was shit but I liked that section near the beginning with Edgey & Kay escaping from the building that they were locked in. It's the case that introduces Lang & Shih-na too.
