>tfw there's nothing else that's worthwhile

i feel you op

Does Baldur's Gate have party management while Fallout doesn't? Having one character is preferable.

it does

I've been in love with open world RPGs since I played Morrowind over 10 years ago. Currently slogging my ass through Dragon Age: Origins and I'm not enjoying it much. Party interactions are fun, party management - not so much. Otherwise the most generic LOTR copycat I've ever seen.

Yeah it does but the combat is a lot better than Fallout's. Might and Magic is also party based but you move as a single entity so if moving a bunch of guys around is annoying to you, then you'll enjoy that. It's also a series very much focused on exploration.

From what I remember of Might & Magic, isn't it always a base-building game?

The Baldur's Gate games are a lot better than DA:O in just about every way. If you want a single character D&D RPG I recommend Neverwinter Nights. Skip the original campaign and go straight to the expansions. There's also a bunch of well made user modules like ADWR, A Cave of Songs, and Swordflight.

Heroes of M&M sure. M&M is a Eye of Beholder type rpg.

You're thinking of Heroes of Might and Magic which is a turn-based strategy spinoff. Might and Magic 1-5 are grid based, turn-based open world RPGs but Might and Magic 6-8 have free movement and let you switch between realtime and turn-based combat. You can download them all of /vr/ in the HoMM general.

So my options are mostly limited to venturing into the deep beyond of old sprite-based games? I suppose I don't mind if they have good writing.

Are the new Obsidian games any good?

Bloodlines
Original Fallout games
Underrail
Fable

Daggerfall
Darklands

Tyranny has an interesting premise.
Pillars of Eternity felt too generic.

Basically your realistic choices are the Fallouts and the Elder Scrollses

The few other games that can be considered truly open world are mostly inferior copycats

Well the classics are classics for a reason
Might&Magic is probably one of the classic RPG series that has aged the most gracefully with intuitive and easy to understand rulesets instead of Wizardry's autism. Some games you could try are Underrail, Geneforge if you can handle the vomit green UI, and maybe Avernum.

Forgot to list VtMB, I just finished a couple of playthroughs of it.

Which Fable games are good? They always looked like kiddy games, but I know nothing about them.

>inferior copycats
>when TES was an inferior copycat to superior games

You could try VtM:Redemption if you want more World of Darkness but it's pretty much a straight hack&slash the whole way through.

Fable 1 is pretty good, and they are kinda childish in a sense that the world is humorous and whimsical rather than serious, but some grim shit can still happen in Fable.

I don't mind bundling up stuff like the Deus Ex games into the open world cauldron. They give you several hubs to explore and do quests, and then sometimes send you off to mission exclusive areas, then back to hubs.

>Which Fable games are good?

None of them, they're all lackluster and EXTREMELY EASY action-adventure games with barebones RPG elements

The music and aesthetic is pretty pleasant though

>open world
Fallout 1 and 2
>hub based
BGs, PS:T, IWD and IWD2

Fallout 1 and 2 are hub based like BG

It's kind of a weird mix.
The world is whimsical and silly but at the same time you can decapitate people or sacrifice your companions to a dark shrine.

Well kinda. They are pretty open though, just like first BG.
