I think RE team somewhat understood that people was tired of the superhuman Chris and wanted to give him a more RE1 normal person vibe. I don't really mind, the punching boulders Chris is not my favourite, but it was kind of a brave move to change his appareance so much.

I just don't get why they had to make him jewish, there is no clue at all that he was jewish in the originals and now we're just supposed to accept it.

No it isn't, there are references from every canon RE game, even Revelations. It's the same universe as Umbrella, the Spencer Mansion incident, Raccoon City's destruction, the events of CV, etc.

I thought a soft reboot just means that while the other games/stories happened, this game more or less "ignores" them as completely irrelevant to its plot and characters and establishes a new setting.
