Good tech costs money. You know it, I know it. Why bitch when a Switch is priced at 300 euros but we are totally OK with shelling out hundreds for PC parts. Some people have different goals: for many, performance is worth the price, even knowing how Intel royally fucks us up with their ridiculous pricing scheme and their high markups or how Nvidia fucked us over with the GTX970. We are still there, we still buy Intel and we still buy Nvidia.

Well, some other people just want to play games off the shelf and spend less money upfront. Yes, over long term PC gaming is cheaper, we know it. But entry barrier costs exists, are real, and affect people's purchasing decisions in many parts of life.

What really gets me is how expensive games have become despite the only advances really being in graphics. You're basically paying £100 for a new EA game + season pass, both of which put together gives you enough content to be comparable to games made 5+ years ago.

Any dips into the 20s is unacceptable. Games should not be released until they can maintain at the bare minimum 30 frames per second, absolutely nothing lower, since every frame under that makes the game increasingly shittier to play. There is no debate about this.

Thing is, NES/SMS and SNES/Genesis are much more debatable. The SMS/Genesis did some things better than their opposition, like how well the Genesis could handle a fuckton of sprites on the screen while the SNES slowed to a crawl if there were more than ten. The N64 and Gamecube were straight-up superior hardware to the competition, besides the Xbox. Yet the two consoles sold poorly and were generally considered failures by Nintendo, despite the massive critical acclaim their games received.

Their handhelds have always been ancient and underpowered for when they were released, and that's always been their most reliable money. The Game Boy line's success is what carried them through their home console troubles. It's no surprise they stopped investing in good hardware when the old, cheap shit has always been what's done them right.

Well maybe if the Switch somehow flops they'll start to give us better hardware.
