I think people are just scared that their "trustworthy information" isn't always trustworthy anymore. Somebody is always out to correct/convince the believers and the believers are often too stubborn or scared to let it slide. Not knowing who you can believe it pretty scary, but that still doesn't explain why you can't breathe without a political opinion being shoved down your throat.

Industry is largely creatively bankrupt. It's easier to make the political or societal commentary the centerpiece of a story. It's difficult to create a story that naturally allows for political discussion to arise from it. The biggest difference is a good story allows for many different viewpoints and beliefs to coexist.
