they fill the niche between 1080p and 4k resolutions.
a perfect "middle ground" at the right size and PPI, and are becoming more cost effective to achieve 60+ FPS compared to 4k
Seems like television and film are aiming for 4k resolution as the next replacement for 1080p, but as of right now hardware to game at that resolution is still expensive and power heavy, so more people are falling back on 1440p as the next step
Looks way crisper than 1080p and i don't need any AA in most games. Gtx 1070 can run most games at 1440p 60fps just fine.
Now redpill me on 25'' 1440p
Because 27'' almost doubles the price
Thats up to you m8, spend what you want to spend
I have one and it looks good :)
that's where you start getting into features of the monitor.
things like refresh rate, gsync/freesync capable, IPS panel, etc...
1440p screens are an awful size because most content is optimized for 1080p.
Upscaling 1080p to 1440p always creates blur because of the non-integer ratio.
>most content
Assuming you plan to watch a lot of movies and TV on your monitor perhaps. Most people have a TV for that however.

I got this monitor a little while back to go with my 1070. I have a 1080p monitor as well sat next to it. It looks really amazing to me. Gsync is nice as well. I guess it doesn't have one of those better panels for color and stuff? But I don't much care. I don't want to go back to just 1080p now.
They are a useless meme.
No game is designed for 1440p.
Monitors over 1080p usually aren't worth it because of monitors' sizes. TVs can get away with 55" and more, where the resolutions are actually noticeable. If you're playing on a tiny monitor (or anything below 40", really), resolutions above 1080p have diminishing returns. Therefore, they're usually not worth the price unless you're autistic about pushing the PC master meme too far.
It's better to improve framerate as much as you can
1440p 144hz is currently the sweetspot for video games. throw in strobing backlights (e.g. ulmb) and you'll have the best experience possible at the moment.
Long time Ago, i get myself a BenQ XL2420T Gaming Monitor.
>1080p
>120hz
>3D
I only had a GTX 680 so I couldn't achieve 120 fps without lowering settings, so I never bothered to reach that. Regardless I've had my monitor set to 120 and after buying a GTX 1060 I've managed to reach 120 in most games with slightly lowered settings.
But my 1060 has really fluctuating fps so I get a lot of stutter, If i set my monitor to 60hz it looks like fucking shit. So I need 120hz in order to not get tearing and very noticeable lack of smoothness. I'm so used to the 120hz, if I buy a new monitor 1080p 60hz will I just regret it?
If I play games on my smaller shit 75hz monitor (1440x900), I don't notice the lack of smoothness due to the fact it's made for 60hz, not just scaled down.
>just got a 4k television
>fire up Forza Horizon 3
>HDR SIGNAL DETECTED alert
>mfw
I find AA pretty necessary, just much less than 1080p. One pass of MSAA hides most everything, if the game has TAA similar to Fallout 4 it equals 0 jaggies
>If you're playing on a tiny monitor (or anything below 40", really), resolutions above 1080p have diminishing returns.
This.
Not telling anyone to stay away from 1440p though, just that it's not really a worthwhile upgrade when on any sort of budget.
>Redpill me
120/144hz is more important. If you can keep up with 1440p at whatever size you're at it won't hurt, though.
Bought a korean 1440p IPS 4 years ago for $250
Can oc to 110hz
I'd have to spend $850 to upgrade upwards without losing color, speed or resolution.
Volta and AMD will change that.
>it's made for 60hz, not just scaled down.
What?
Nothing is "made" for 60hz. Setting your 120hz monitor to 60 is the exact same thing, you may see it smoother because its response times are also much slower than the benq.
If I buy a new CPU, can I get my 1070 to do 144fps or should I go for 1440p/60 instead?
25 is smaller, 27 is bigger. Then you have to worry about other monitor features. For the most part you can't go wrong with Dell, they are the quality name for monitors but are expensive.
You can oc monitors?
Expensive.
Only these korean ones which have no scaler.
It makes them run at even 120hz depending on each, but as they are IPS its not exactly "true" 120hz, as IPS pixels are too slow in changing colors which creates a bit of a ghosting effect, and ofcourse its not as "fast" as gaming monitors are. It is still a lot smoother.
So when will nvidia shit out new gen? 1080ti looks pretty sweet but i don't feel like throwing 980ti away just yet.
The refresh rate makes a more noticeable difference. I'd go for something with 144hz refresh rate. If you have a 1080 gpu or something you could get a 1440p monitor with a 144hz refresh rate. 1070s or lower can't really handle 144 fps at 1440p
Didn't know about this..."Most people have a TV for that however." You're out of touch. Nobody owns a TV anymore
Get a job
I've got a 970 and I still can't be bothered to upgrade. Hopefully Cyberpunk 2077 will do the same as The Witcher 3, then I'll 100 % upgrade
...
Will an RX 480 run games at 1440p and maintain 60fps, if not now then in the future?
0, go for either ultrawide or high refresh rate
Reminder that VA>IPS>TN, unless you work in graphic design or photography.
Are you supposed to increase font size in above 1080p resolutions?
Usually not until 4k.
Though for example I read this shithole at 140% zoom on half of an 1440p/27"
No. With 1440p you should just be getting a larger monitor.
28+ inch monitors
I'm a small guy
for 1080p go max 30 inches though,
i have a 32 inch (*wink wink*) 1080p tv i use as a monitor for my pc, its really nice when i sit back and watch shit but really bad when i get close to surf on interwebz etc.
planing on buying a ultrawide when i get myself a 1080ti , though i doubt if i ll ever spend money on 1080ti
more like 24" if you want clarity
32 inch isnt bad tbqh, i never experienced pixelation or clairty problems.
the problem is monitor itself is just too big when i get close to it.
TN screens have better response times though.
>pixelation
Well its hard to when the pixels are fucking gigantic due to stretching a low resolution to a big size.
Pixel density is literal picture quality, and 1080p at 32" is not even 70 ppi, thats very low.
3840x1600 masterrace in my dreams
well when i mean pixellation i meant 32 inch 1080p doesnt have much clarity or low ppi problem at least for me.
In CURRENT YEAR, that's now the difference between 1MS and 4MS tops on a good IPS/VA panel. It only "matters" if you're some CS esports shitter, which you probably aren't.
My 4K Samsung CIA TV flickers when I use the native resolution.
The HDMI cable has trouble handshaking with my computer.
I think my cable may be too long.
Lower resolutions work just fine though.
Your diagram is wrong, 1080p should take up exactly 1/4 of a 2160p monitor.
A 1070 can do 144fps on pretty much all games at 1080p. At max settings too. The 1070 is a weird inbetween where you can get either really good 1080p performance or alright 1440p performance.
Here's a better chart for you niggers
i'd say you can do either. i get 60 fps 4k maxed killing floor 2 with a 1070. it's one hell of a card.
