The internet happened.

Pretty much this and they kept polluting their network with reruns of Cops and American Ninja

It wasn't just this. There was a lot of meddling by the higher ups. Add to this that a lot of the techtv shows also got shafted pissing off those who liked techtv.

Overall the channel was just a massive embarrassment desu. It was good for only a few short years in actuality. It was shit for a very long fucking time. Probably 80% of the channels entire run was shit.

A 23 hour block of cops, cheaters, stuff along those lines.

Comcast ruined it just like everything else they touch.

Dont worry user, theres plenty of other garbage television channels. Maybe you should try watching spike or trutv.

Yeah, but the fact the channel's target audience was naturally people that were largely savvy with the Internet made it an uphill battle. With more Americans having access to better Internet, and Internet content changing to meet this demand, there's less room for what G4/TechTV did.

The Internet isn't just more convenient; it's more flexible and much quicker to react than a cable show like XPlay could ever be, even if XPlay once had a pretty unique identity.

Comcast were incompetent dicks like always, but I think they hastened the channel's demise more than anything.

Also, Ryan Dunn died right after they put an awful lot of eggs in his basket.

The network just became cops/cheaters reruns because tech heads and 'gamers' usually left the TV on as background noise more then anything while they played games.

G4 started and was around even during the internet age you fucking mong... Shit, they had shows just for MMOs from Portal and The Screen Savers. Even Cheaters was still a successful show even though this was around the time when looking up cheats online and looking up game guides with GameFAQs was becoming fucking huge.

The show just went to shit suddenly when they started taking down shows and opting for diarrhea like Ninja Warriors and reality show TV.

I still miss Portal man... It's still the kind of stuff people who love MMO's live for, making stories out of their favorite MMOs being played out.

Have no idea what happened to the show. Used to watch it for Kristen Holt mostly.

Well.. look at the bright side. At least G4 didn't have to suffer with the inevitable casualization boom that was going to happen and the channel having to pander and change by casualizing themselves. The channel was going to shit itself eventually from either killing themselves, or becoming something unrecognizable. I can already see how a modern G4 would look like. We will be reminiscing of the good ol' G4 days as frumpy short feminists with hipster lens take over the show, famous YouTubers like Angry Joe or random Twitch niggers will be given TV deals and air time to compete/capitalize on YouTube popularity, G4 will follow along the current trend of modern gaming where there will be an inevitable Let's Play TV show maybe along the lines of guide videos for certain games, and Feminist Frequency will no doubt put pressure on G4 back in 2012-2013 giving Anita a deal to have Feminist Frequency be an actual TV show.

Even though the current death is not a proud one, it still less horrible.

Nah I am pretty sure the channel could have thrived actually. They could have jumped on bandwagons such as twitch and esports before they got popular.

The problem is and always will be that the higher ups didn't want a channel for nerds. There are tons of channels out there that are still alive and that is because the higher ups want it that way. The wrong people got access to that channel therefore killing it.

I actually interviewed Cory Rouse, the first host of Cheat for my crappy website (its down now).

Ill post it if anyone wants it. But according to him, even at the start of G4, they knew that they were up against the internet, and there were quite a few decisions that he didn't really agree with. They tried to beat the internet by having a fun presentation and personality, something you didn't get with cheats posted to gamefaqs.

Fun fact: He wasn't really told until last minute that he was being replaced.

Not to say it belonged on the channel, but Ninja Warrior was enjoyable to watch. Better than the ANW shit I see occasionally. And AotS for that matter.

Still, I'd rather have Cinematech, Arena, Icons, etc. back instead, though is spot on.

Fuck I miss that show, I was just going to post that and Portal.

Cinematech was literally THE show for game buffing and building up your game knowledge. You watch the random trailers, write them down, look them up later on the internet, and be proud of all the games you know that are out there.

They even got rid of Beast Wars so even though it was shit with some redeemable stuff, they fucking killed it once they took that out. It's completely dead to me now.

It's not that I think they were blissfully unaware of the Internet's looming presence; I think it just became the case that as Internet content got more robust G4 and TechTV were a lot less interesting -- and whatever residual merit they had was overlooked in favor of convenience or accessibility. This, combined with various problems with Comcast's management of the channel, was G4 and TechTV's undoing.

Honestly no, it shouldn't have. Like if it was an episode I hadn't seen, great. Otherwise I'd change the channel, which definitely was a problem.

TechTV was a huge dropoff from ZDTV
G4 was a HUGE dropoff from TechTV

I made pic related when DirecTV dropped them and Sup Forums was going ballistic over it. They had like 2 hours of new content weekly.

Attack of the Show was also a huge piece of shit compared to The Screensavers

I wanted death when I realized the ratio from xplay to AOTS. I just quit tv entirely, can't say it wasn't a good decision

I don't think G4 really had the clout to stand on its own two legs even BEFORE you could access things like YouTube from a console (not to mention YouTube's existence). G4techtv was alright, but you're right, it would be a disaster today.
