So I've been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks.

Apparently the Switch and BotW got released already and people have beaten it already.

Objectively, can any oldfags tell me if it is worth it or not? And by that I want a direct comparison between BotW and games like OOT, MM and WW.

No bullshit. Gimme the details anons.

It isn't linear trash like any of those games you listed

You have to wait a couple of weeks until the PC version is out unless you just wanna hear a bunch of biased fanboy bullshit calling BotW the best game ever made of all time

It's empty aimless nonlinear trash unlike the tight and focused games you listed.

Perhaps, but it's a far cry from the feel of Zelda games like the ones he listed. Not to mention chock full of purchases and amiibo.

I assume you don't have a wii u?

Not sure if any console is worth it for one single game, but BOTW will give you hours of fun.
It's the most refreshing zelda game by date, as they finally broke away from a lot of the tired traditions that OOT brought.

It's as open as the very first zelda game, you can go and do whatever you want whenever you want. The sense of exploration reminds me the most of Wind Waker, but its even better. It's also similar to Majora's Mask in that it focuses more on the overworld rather than dungeons, although NPCs aren't as engaging as in MM.

I haven't enjoyed a zelda this much since a link to the past.

This seriously a master piece and I say this as some one who had given up on the series and hates the shit out of nintendo.

It is objectively worth playing it in whatever way possible, be it buying CEMU, buying a Wii U, or even buying a Switch.

If you enjoy minecraft, Skyrim, fallout 4, you'll enjoy this game.

>as they finally broke away from a lot of the tired traditions that ALTTP brought.
FTFY.

Overhyped, it might actually be a 9/10 game, but I'm leaning more to 8/10 from what I heard, don't get it on switch, the console itself isn't worth it, get it on the wii u or pc if you are going to get it, use CEMU for the pc version, but wait a few months before you do the pc version, they are still smoothing out the game for emulation, it's almost playable at this point.

I've seen 4k footage of the PC version. still looked like shit tho lol

>I assume you don't have a wii u?
Latest console I have is PS3 but the concept of a functioning, portable console like the switch appeals to me if it gets some good games.

>It's also similar to Majora's Mask in that it focuses more on the overworld rather than dungeons
I remember OOTfags taking the biggest shit on MM for that specific reason. So I guess Nintendo completed it's transformation for the franchise now...

Okay so I've played 50+ hours of BOTW already, have beaten pretty much everything, have all my armor upgrades to max and have done 75 of the 120 shrines. I have no idea how many koroks ive done, but it's a lot.

I'll start with this, the game is a solid 8/10. It's fun and good, it's definitely worth playing, if you can't wait it's worth buying, but if you can wait there will probably be dlc and expansions coming down the pipeline along with a price drop on the game.

The switch is fine, it's solid, theres some stupid issues with it, charger port placement, shoddy controller bluetooth. Etc.

I'm going to make a more in depth post to follow this one up.

Everything about the game is wonderful except that typical dungeons gave their lives to create a bunch of Shrines that get old fast. Also the music is barely there and what is there is just ambient tracks. Other than that it's perfection. Give me the open world of BOTW and some classic dungeons and the green tunic and I'm sold.

did you even play the game?

the game is incredible enjoyable if you like to explore, tons of small details to discover and the world really feels big and alive. dungeons are pretty meh and were clearly not the focus, i would recommend it if you can have fun by discovering the world and playing around with the engine

Lets talk about the switch first. The switch has about the power of a wii U going at full blast, which is kind of a let down, on the plus side the architecture is closer than it ever has been to just being a PC in a different form factor, which means that support for 3rd parties has never been easier, if they will support it or not is another story, but that they easily can is a good start. The resolution is probably like 900 which is lower than even full HD which is kind of lame, but ps4 and xbone both run at sub HD resolutions too so as far as consoles go thats not so weird. During normal play in BOTW there are definite and obvious framedrops. It doesn't happen all the time, it doesn't even happen a lot. It's definitely noticeable. The controllers when not literally plugged into the console have pretty shoddy bluetooth connection. Personally my controllers connect fine even through my body, but I have friends who can block the connections with their body. So it's probably just a failure rate of some small % that you may end up being one of. The controllers are absurdly priced. You'll also need to buy a stand if you wanted to use it tabletop because they put the charger on the bottom it stands on, which is pretty fucking stupid.

Next post will be about BOTW

Keep going user. When did you buy your switch? Did you have hardware issues?

>Latest console I have is PS3 but the concept of a functioning, portable console like the switch appeals to me if it gets some good games.

It will also get Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2, and Mario Oddesey within this year. Mario Kart 8 is also one of the best Mario Kart games to date, and the deluxe version on Switch has all the DLC and stuff, doubling its content.

I'd say its worth it, but maybe I'd wait until some of the other games are out.

BOTW is a solid 8/10. It's a very polished sandbox that allows you a lot of freedom to really fuck around in, but it's held back by some really dumb choices and is clearly and obviously unfinished.

The map is appropriately sized, and theres a lot of space to work with, but it never feels un-managable. If you had to run across the map as a flat surface, you'd probably take an hour or two. Thee map obviously isn't flat though, theres giant mountains and hills and rivers everywhere, it'd probably take a good chunk of time to run straight from anywhere to anywhere. You can use horses to cut down time, but they are basically fucking worthless because if you pick any point A and any point B on the map, you better believe you'll be doing some climbing, and you'll end up leaving your horse. Which brings me to my first major flaw in the games design. While it's raining you cant fucking climb, and you cant make a fire so you cant sit at a fireplace to wait out the rain, or even cook food. You are effectively limited to waiting for the rain to stop, and it rains A L O T. You eventually get a powerup that trivializes it but it happened often enough that by the end of the game I was noticeably frustrated by the raining.

more coming.

yeah over 80 hours

Next lets talk about enemies. There's like 6 different enemies you'll be seeing all game. They all come in different colors, the colors usually indicate how much hp they have in general. Red is low hp, blue is medium, black is a lot. Some enemies change colore depending on element instead. Those are usually pretty obvious at a glance. Fire/lightning/ice are the elements they all do different flavors of annoying the player slightly. The most common enemies in the game can pick up any weapon close to them, and I mean any weapon close to them. You'll quickly learn that you're not judging the enemy you're fighting you need to be careful about what weapon they are using. They can and will one shot you, even very very early. Late game your armor gets good enough that nothing at all can phase you

Theres like 3 world map bosses, and 4 major bosses, then ganon. They are all kinda jokes, once you have armor and decent weapons the game is literally over. And you can pick them up as soon as you find them or look up where they are so you'll pretty much ruin the game for yourself if you look up a guide.

Finally lets talk about shrines and dungeons. Strictly speaking theres more dungeon in this game then any other zelda game ever made. But it's all parcelled off into bite sized pieces across the map. If you think thats good, or think thats bad. That's really for you to decide.

I got my switch on march 3rd, I've played it exclusively in handheld mode. The stand that comes with it is cheap garbage plastic, and the inside could easily scratch the screen. The entire device is smaller than I expected, the screen is about as wide and tall as a vita. not counting the controllers which add about an inch on either side.

During gameplay ive had some frame dips, nothing too bad, but I definitely noticed it.

My controllers are 100% fine, I've tried to desync them with my body and distance, but I was unable to. My friend isn't so lucky, his controller desyncs depending on how hes holding it (he can accidentally cover the antennae I guess)

The controllers wiggle just a bit when connected to the screen, it's not a problem but it kinda worried be at first.

The kick stand is fine, unless you literally push it over it won't fall but it doesn't inspire much confidence, and the viewing angle it creates is really bad, also the charger is on the bottom so you'll probably need to buy a stand if you intended to place it on a table or desk and use it that way.

Battery life is bad, but theres no real difference in play with it plugged in or with it not plugged in, which is probably why it's so bad.

Ive had no software issues, it detected the game, and started the game fine, the screen is fine.

I have no dead pixels at all.

I'm gonna echo what said.

Assuming you have other games/stuff to do at the moment, there's no harm in waiting. At worst you'll just play these games a bit later than everyone else. At best, you'll get a revised version of the console, or a cheaper version of it.

Nintendo is going to be in an awkward place in a month or two, because by then everyone who wanted to play Zelda on the Switch will have gotten one. The sales will likely stagnate, and they might lower the price, or at least bundle it with a game or something.

>My controllers are 100% fine, I've tried to desync them with my body and distance, but I was unable to. My friend isn't so lucky
Do you guys have the same color console? Or is yours grey, and his colored?

Mines Grey, his are colored. I know what you're thinking and I'm pretty sure you're right. From what I understand only the color ones experience this defect.

I hate past 3D Zeldas and I love BotW. 10/10 game except for dumb rain mechanics.
There's countless of ways to play the game. Even the puzzles.
game is just ridiculously free, more often than not I feel like I'm not doing the dungeons the intended way and that's completely fine and am sure was intended.

>criticize Zelda
>Did you even play the game?

Why can't you point out flaws in this game?

>which means that support for 3rd parties has never been easier

hahahahahahaha

It's an okay open world game but a terrible Zelda game.

I'd give it a 9/10

What it does new, is really on par with OOT. MM and WW are no where near gene defining as OOT, because they all use the OOT fomula. BoTW formula is brand new with many techniques that wee used individually by other game but never as one.

However, the sacrifice is the complete removal of the OOT formula both good and bad.

Really graphics, framerate and often dull environments are the negatives.

It's basically just a nivida graphics card with a screen, It literally couldn't be any easier.

I'm really hoping it gets some kind of Steam compatibility. It's already getting Ultimate Chicken Horse eventually, but hopefully a couple more steam titles can find their way onto the Switch.

I mean, you're seriously delusional if you think steam compatibility is even in the cards for the switch.

Literally not going to happen.

It's just another Zelda game but open world. Weapons have durability. You can explore and do dungeons in any order. It's like WW but not as linear. WW was better.

Didn't the PS3 get some version of Steam?

>BoTW formula is brand new with many techniques that wee used individually by other game but never as one.

you gotta be joking. Asscreed alone have climbing, gliding, crafting and its own physic.

>And by that I want a direct comparison between BotW and games like OOT, MM and WW.

You'll hate it if you want a traditional Zelda.

It's a fun sandbox but it's an awful Zelda.

There were Zelda games before those Aonuma games, user.

Oh fuck off. 1% of people have played Zelda II and Zelda I is too esoteric for modern gamers. And even still, there's hardly anything in common considering Zelda I had actual dungeons, bosses and items.

You get the green tunic by completing all 120 shrines :^)
