It needed a better launch lineup. I'm a actually amazed it sold so well with Zelda being it's only solid launch game, a game that is also on WiiU.

The next few games coming out on it are all ports too. Splatoon 2 is the next good exclusive and then nothing for months after that.

As of now no it's doing pretty well, but it's to be seen if Nintendo can keep up the momentum. The software lineup is pretty sparse with no multiplats to fill the gaps. Their marketing has improved tenfold over the Wii U so hopefully that will mitigate the damage.

It really doesn't. Marketing creates demand. There are a certain amount of people interested right away, even without being marketed to. They did not reach all these people. This wasn't deliberate though, they just don't have the ability to precisely pinpoint how many are gonna sell right off the bat. Now that the initial shipment is consumed they will release a few more and so on until they are running along that line of just enough.
