Why is the PSP so underrated and overlooked?

Why is the PSP so underrated and overlooked?

It's not, you're just 12 and werent able to comprehend memories and interactions when everyone had them and brought them to school and on the bus and everything.

no games

>when everyone had them

But everyone had a DS almost nobody had a PSP

Because early in it's lifecycle it got mostly the same or similar games as the PS2 that most people already had such as GTA's, Daxter and God of War.

Later on it got different games like patapon and locoroco, but by then it was kinda too late.

If you had a Cube or really wanted your PS2(like) games on the go, it was great though.
Plus, emulators.

t.Have a PS2 and DS.

retarded

Name one GOOD exclusive outside of MH

UMDs sucked ass
almost all of my discs got scratched and the cheap plastic casings got broken by just playing normally

dunno bro. playing some upscaled ridge racer right now on ppsspp.

Dracula X Chronicles

Because console wars don't stop, and if one sells better than the other, the competition is deemed dead or something. PSP's insane library was underlooked because of some other company's numbers.

Phantasy Star Portable series
Project Diva series
Persona 3 Portable was good for what it was.

it isn't; it's a timepiece of a forgotten era.

the PSP fulfilled a niche that not even Sony understood.

it was the predecessor to the modern "smart" device (i.e. smartphones).

it could do games, photos, music, videos, and web browsing, and it was released in 2004/2005.

so, instead of having your mp3 player, gameboy, and phone, you now only had to carry a phone and a PSP.

>so why did the vita fail

timing. at the end of 2011/the beginning of 2012, smartphones were starting to become commonplace.

to the average normie, the Vita fufills no purpose to them because now they can have one device (the smartphone) that is their gameboy, their mp3 player, their photo album, their camera, their movie player, their web browser, and their phone.

get the EU exclusive ridge racer 2 [PSP] instead before you sink in serious time in, the launch title ridge racer [PSP]has less tracks & special vehicles.

the only thing that ridge racer 2 [PSP] is missing from ridge racer 1 [PSP] is the new Rally-X special machine (basically the best car in the game) that you get from scoring 50,000 points in the new Rally-X minigame (near fucking impossible with the weird-ass controls) and completing event 16 of the advanced world tour.

Prettt much this, it was a proto smart phone in everyway except being a phone but most people didn't get one since it's biggest exclusives were either ports or niche jap games

The Vita also failed because its hardware was too powerful in a way. People expected console level graphics (which it was nearly capable of pulling off), but it wasn't worth it for devs to put in that kind of time for a handheld (for the other reasons you mentioned).

>it's a timepiece of a forgotten era.
That it is. For some reason, using its clunky web browser was pretty fun. It was the first device I had where I could actually play online against other people. I played Medal of Honor for ages on it.

It was a simpler time. It was, a comfier time.

>tfw too powerful to get exclusives

Tekken 6 was great on it. PPSSPP is a great emulator. Games look like early PS2 games, so it did have good hardware.

It was mostly ports for most of its lifespan, and when it finally hit its stride with a decent catalog Sony fucked it with the PSPGo and Vita.

It got overshadowed by the DS overwhelming game library.

how can you defeat a console as fucking popular as the DS? the same happened with vita and 3DS, but now with less games and better quality.

>For some reason, using its clunky web browser was pretty fun.
Relative to other handheld devices at the time, its browser really wasn't bad. I remember using it to sign into MSN and AIM and stuff via an browser messaging client.

Pretty much. Look at Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Killzone: Mercenary. Nothing else on Vita came close to those visuals in terms of graphical fidelity.

>did karate or some shit for a little bit around the launch of the psp
>met a kid who took his psp with him to the dojo
>in the lockeroom he brought up hentai after some other kid mentioned he caught a glimpse of some girl's clevage during class
>I was the only one who knew what hentai was
>I smiled when he mentioned it
>he saw that and sparked a conversation with me about fucking hentai
>told me used his psp to view it
>then spiraled into how he loved hentai because of the insane positions stuff that can't occur in real life
>I just kept smiling and nodding until I finished dressing into my street clothes
>power walked out of there
I love hentai too, but jesus fuck you need to control your power level, especially when you're young. I could never look at the PSP the same.

>dat feel when so many games were never released digitally for PSP

Seriously, PSP went from alright to amazing when it got hacked properly. Such a great device compared to DS which was, in comparison, one step above your average calculator. I just wish PSP got more JRPG that weren't simply ports or remakes. That was the only department I cared about and where DS had it beat.

It isn't, its shit

I think Sony did not understand one bit about PSP, from thinking they can push an entire new storage medium like they did with blu-ray to its multimedia capabilities. PSP was just there at the right time like you said. It's beyond me Sony decided to outjew Capcom for Monster Hunter games on Vita, though.

>HOW DOES GETTING MASSIVELY OUTSOLD BY A COMPETITOR NEGATIVELY AFFECT PUBLIC PERCEPTION OF A PRODUCT?
How is it possible to have negative business sense.

libery city stories and vice city stories were both exclusives on release, they were released on ps2 about 9 months later.

>PSP's insane library
If you think it's library was insane then you don't even know how fucking ridiculous DS's library was.

DS had way too much shovelware. It's really not a problem these days when everyone has a modded DS and can just put on SD card all the games they download online, but it's a problem for retail space and difficulty of finding said good games.

I didn't really find the DS's library that amazing. But I'm mostly into action games and platformers and stuff. It still had enough stuff I'm into to be worth owning, but I was wowed by its library.

>was
*wasn't

There were a good number of PSP threads a while back, its niche just got taken by the Vita. Still have mine and occasionally boot it to marvel at the games I have on there and the quality it had for the time.

It's monstrous library, gimmicks, and normie friendly power was the key to kill the PSP for good, it was also retarded easy to hack so even normies could do it and having so many games mean that any possible game genre was there and you never run out of stuff to play.

too bad cuz I really enjoyed the PSP and it was clearly better than DS in any possible way but the library.

lu fucking mines

Zettai Hero Project

Tales of the world trilogy was pretty good if you have a hacked PSP.

also, GEB.

I still use mine to listen to music. Was using it to play games on the train as recent as maybe 2 years ago.

Crisis Core
Dissidia

I have both, I end up playing more random ass games on DS plus Super Mario 64 than actual DS games like muh Phoenix Wright.

Wasn't Crisis core exclusive?
Dissidia Duodecim
Patapon 1~3.

gtfo.

>muh exclusives

>GOOD

the few niche dongeon crawlers and the rpgs are good, plus the rare translated shit

baito desu.

Yeah because the multiplats are SO much better on PSP right?

It was my first console. I was fairly poor back then.
> great timesinks like Tekken, first Dissidia & Metal Slug
> Persona 2 & 3
> PS1 emulation so I could play FF6-9 in the comfiest way possible (they actually looked good on small screen)
> Homebrews which include emulators. Again, Pokemons were comfier on PSP than on PC.
> Multimedia machine

I loved it to death and I still own/use one.
I bought Nintendo DS Lite which had lots of great games as well (World Ends With You, Layton, puzzle games, Pokemons) but PSP was still much more versatile.

>buys a console for exclusives
lmao

Cont.
Vita was too fucking expensive. Even used consoles costed a lot, not to mention these retarded mem(e)cards.

UMDs were fucking awful. You probably had CFW like literally everyone else, and thank god for that. Try using a PSP without CFW and it's as good as a paperweight.

>Muh ADD

Ace Combat X and X2, and they are actually good unlike the PS2 games, AC7 and asshorizon.

>ACX is actually hard in some instances, and your fuck ups actually mean something
>ACX2 is one of the few ACs that have an actually GOOD plot, the other being 3JP

There is also Warship Gunner 2 portable.

>small TN LCD with shitty viewing angles = privacy
>somewhat functional web browser
>horny teenagers
Yeah, I think Sony knew what they were doing.

>Steam account with 300+ games
>GOG account with 120 + games
>Origin account with about 30 games
>extensive library of games from the ps3 going all the way back to the SegaCD
>42" LCD tv to p[lay them on
>27" crt to play classic games on
>Virtual Boy with games
>Pocket PC with a dozen games
>smart phones with hundreds of games in library
>Last 5 days all I play are Tekken Dark Resurrection, Loco Roco, and Lumines 2

I love my PSP.

As a side, how is the screen so perfect? I have a first run fat and the screen looks better than my cheap IPS smart phone and my Samsung Gnex AMOLED.

At the time in 2004 having a UMD that could hold like 1.4GB was the right choice over flash media that could only hold like 32MB.

Because besides Patapoon and the VC games it has shit.

>As a side, how is the screen so perfect? I have a first run fat and the screen looks better than my cheap IPS smart phone and my Samsung Gnex AMOLED.
It really isn't. You're probably just getting old and your eyes are going to shit so you like the larger pixel size compared to the "larger numbers are better" PPI on the Android HDPI displays.

Twisted Metal Head On was the best since TM2 though.

Because Sony marketed the system, but not its games.

Damn shame too because there are a lot of gems in those mines, especially if you speak Japanese. But even if you don't this wonderful little device somehow still managed to get quality releases up until 2016.

I am getting old, but the screen hasn't aged much if at all, while AMOLED screens, TN screens, and IPS screens have come and gone to shit.

Bruh, the screen on the fat model PSP IS a TN panel. A really bad one, with poor color reproduction and response time.

Yeah, the ghosting can be a problem, but the screen compared to my other devices has held up remarkably well. Not saying it doesn't have it's problems, just saying that it has held up better than most other devices I've had, including my Galaxy Nexus and an Asus Monitor I had for only four years.

Well I guess it rather good in that regard, but I bought a 2000 model not too long ago and was shocked by how washed-out the colors are. Wish I wasn't such a cheap ass and had just bought another 3000.

IME desktop monitors go bad because of shitty caps in the power supplies. Samsung 244T REEEEEEEE. Portable LCDs seem to last a lot longer. I've never had any portable LCD degrade or fail, and I have some from the 80s.

>Monster Hunter
>good

Funny joke, user.

Bad advertisement.

Got marketed as a shit DVD player that makes you rebuy all your movies. And a giant shit iPod. And shit internet browser.

It got marketed as everything but a god damn game machine.

All those good JRPGs that vanished after PS1, yep sitting on the PSP where nobody knew to look. Good puzzle games you haven't seen since Sega, yep there too. Good ports of some fighters and tactics games too.

Didn't help it was massively expensive when it came out and nobody is gonna pay a lot for something they didn't know had a ton of games.

falcom always delivers

Playing FF7-9 in bed in the winter is a memory i'll always cherish i love the PSP IMO the GOAT handheld.

I only got CFW because NISA refused to take my money. That opened the floodgates though.

The disc drive on my PSP died a year or two after that anyway, but by this point the Vita had been out for awhile anyway.

NO GAMES WEEB MACHINE EHHHEE

i dropped mine like half a metre and it broke
shit fucking build but other than that, better console than DS
