Playing this for the first time ever.
Any tips and tricks and must-know/must-have stuff?

sorry man, I played it for 6 hours then I dropped it out of boredom
try not to succumb to the same fate
lrn 2 time attacks i guess
Don't even think about using offensive magic without being on NG++
So what do I use for the first few hours?
You cannot use 1 weapon throughout the whole game.
Your "best" weapon will do 0 damage to some enemies and youre just gonna have to deal with that. Make sure you craft 2 or 3 weapons with wildly different stats
Don't get too confused by the stats of weapons. You basically need only three weapons on yourself: One that does piercing damage, one thatd does slashing damage and one that does blunt damage. If you still don't do enough damage, buff yourself. You should always buff yourself. If it still isn't enough, debuff the enemy and find out his weaknesses, then add gems to your weapons that exploit these weaknesses. Shields are overall really great, so try to use one-handed weapons. You can add gems to your shields that greatly increase your defense.
Just a bit of echoing what
said
Definitely carry multiple weapons, so you're ready to face off against different types of enemies. Different things have different weaknesses, and while it is technically possible to go through the entire game dealing 0-2 damage a hit to things, it certainly won't be fun.
Do I just use a guide then?
I mean dumb question but it's better to know what's coming up if the game really is like this.
No you fucking stupid pussy
Sydney did nothing wrong
do have slight autism?
then you'll have fun with it.
Be patient, you'll spend lots of time forging weapons.
I liked it, but it's a time sink.
This.
You get an analysis spell to tell you what the enemy is weak against. Don't worry, the game isn't really hard. Most enemies will have a hard time trying to kill you.
You don't need a guide, just make use of the tools available in the game. The analyze spell is very handy for figuring out what you need to use against enemies and such.
Don't read anything about weapon crafting and min-maxing. It's going to ruin your fun.
The game's trash OP
>not an argument
also ur moms a whore.
Just carry one of each weapon type (slash, pierce, blunt) and a crossbow for the rare flying enemies and cycle through them until you do good damage. Practice your chaining on the dummies in the beginning wine cellars before the boss room. Cycle your combos around to find a set you're comfortable with.
Ignore every single person that said you need more than one weapon. Seriously. I've just recently finished the game using the very same blade I started with.
Read some guides, learn how blacksmithing works, and remember that you hardly level up: it's YOUR BLADES that do. They get better at types of enemies the more you use it. So keep upgrading your blade to a superior level instead of reaching out for new ones. Blades, like all equipment, have tiers. A better tier blade crushes things.
Always use every grimoire you find. Always use buffs and debuffs. Think smartly. If you're facing a fire enemy, it's more important for you to imbue your weapon with water properties than just make it stronger. You can use both gems and magic to do that. Keep it up and things will go swiftly. Use chains. Use break arts. Use everything you've got. You have the tools.
Once you learn how the game works even the final boss can go down in mere seconds. It's either that of 0 dagame. Understanding the game is essential.
Fantastic game. Possibly my favorite alongside EarthBound.
Part of the fun is going in blind and figuring out the mechanics yourself.
Dealing 0 damage on the first hit is not a big deal, chain attacks and the numbers will rise.
Once you figured the game out, bosses will go down in seconds.
VS was the DS of its time. God I love that game.
I'm trying to remember how it worked now. You could use a chain that damaged you and then one that dealt damage based on how much you'd taken and just keep looping them round right?
Pretty sure that's what I did to every boss once I realised I could.
spoiler
Thanks for making this thread OP - I tried to pick it up but I got bored in two hours - I'll have a go tomoz
It's an extremely slow game. It's not for everyone, so don't force yourself to play it.

You can beat the game with just your fists, but it's still a really good idea to use a pierce, blunt and edged weapon instead of doing so.
Everything else is solid advice.
It's also useful to have a crossbow, or at least a spear or something to get at enemies who fly or run away from you.
And note that the timing for chains is different for different weapons. If you make a new one of a different type you might suddenly find yourself having to learn it all over again.
OP here, just started playing, going through the first dungeon, everything's okay except for one thing.
The camera really loves to zoom in, and that girl from the cover is probably the THICCest PS1 character I've ever seen. Playing on PSP so it might be a bit upscaled, but I swear no other PS1 game had asses done in 3D this good. I'm having a hard time remembering PS2 games that did it that well too..
>not noticing Ashley's tight ass-cheeks
Oh yeah, Rose is great. Too bad you won't see much of these hips.
