Original is a classic, sequel tries way too hard to be different for the sake of being different. Also levels have terrible design.
...
The first was very interesting to play for the first time, quite fun. Can't say on the sequel because Australian nanny state laws
The sequel is ruined by an overuse of "let's put glass and windows everywhere with guys shooting at you far off the screen" levels.
The Hospital is the only bad Hotline Miami 1 level, whereas 2 has a multitude of terrible levels that kill any desire to replay it.
Hotline Miami 2
>Everyone dies at the end lol
>Nuke everything to remove any possibilities of levels being unreliable narrator, like in the first game
>No endgame content, besides a 'hard mode'
>No additional levels with Jacket, Biker, etc
>No secret collectibles, like in the first game
>No option to kill the Son or Pardo for being douchebags
JUST fuck my ending up
>tfw you fell for hotline miami 2 hype
At least the soundtrack is glorious, and still remains one of the few things on Steam with a fully 100% positive rating
And now that I've said it i'm sure someone here is going to change that
The first one is fucking awesome.
The second one takes some of the best parts of 1 at trow it through one of it's many windows. It had the potential to be really good but they fucked it up, only people who remotely like HM2 are people way too much into the characters.
Hard mode was also quite the bullshit
I fully believe they tried their hardest with the sequel, and if you like the first one then you can probably enjoy it. But it's pretty fucking flawed.
Playing the first one in the initial days after its release was great because it was this great, unusual mindfuck. By now, everyone has already played a dozen other games that have HLM in their dna, and it kinda blunts the impact.
They didnt try at all lol. "The Fans" arc was their way of making fun of people who liked the first game.

Why exactly are the devs so spiteful about the series and their fans? It took them ages to not just say "fuck you" to anyone who was curious about a HM sequel, and they were very angry when stating HM3 would never happen.

Taking the time to master poorly designed levels doesn't change them from being poorly designed, if anything during that webm the design flaws can be seen.
The first game was about constant momentum, if you werent moving, you were dead or putting your score at risk, but here you just stay still in one area due to the bottleneck design
>this level
"The Fans" was definitely to lampoon folks that took the first game too seriously. The fucking real ending of the first game was the devs as Janitors saying "lol none of this even made sense."
But I think they worked really hard to grow the concepts from the first game and just hit a brick wall. It's really simple, tight gameplay. You can't exactly add much more before it becomes something else, and they certainly borked up the level design which everyone seems to acknowledge.
I think they said there wouldn't be a third because of burnout and the realization they had just run that particular well dry.
Or maybe they just don't want to work together anymore. Dennaton doesn't really seem to exist in any meaningful way this point.
Beating HM2 on hard mode made it a lot easier to have fun with the game. I won't say it's not flawed though.
