How many of you have played part of the ARMA series before?
I grabbed ARMA II and it's DLCs on steam recently. I've been doing some reading some reading and watching some dyslexi videos and practicing in the campaign and VR modes and the infantry showcase for a couple of weeks.
On Friday I installed a number of mods suggested by a friend. (The CUP mods RHS mods and a couple of multiplayer mission generating mods)
On Saturday we played through a couple is missions. both went south but we had a lot of fun.
I'm looking forward to playing more in the future.
What are your experiences with ARMA and it's spinoffs like?
I have almost 1000 hours in arma 3. You need to join a good group. My group and I make our own missions, some mods and other things.
Joshua James
Cool. I have noticed that many examples of fun had in Arma 3 on the internet seem to come from organized groups.
Do you have any recommendations on how to find, assess, and join ARMA groups?
Anthony Thompson
How the duck do you learn to spot niggas in this thing?
Thermals make it easy but how do y'all learn to do it with just eyes?
Leo Edwards
>played Operation Flashpoint from it's release until about 2010 >mostly played the campaign and did singleplayer/LAN CTI >moved to Arma 2 when it's expansion came out >did CTI with mates, lots of fun operating >Arma 3 on n off since Alpha (cuz it cost like $12) >done a lot of KotH and a few other modes, they're fun
it's ok, far less buggy, better UI and better gfx than other games in the series but i've just played it way too much I think. Highly recommend, i'm just burnt out.
Levi Diaz
Hold the right mouse button down after you pull up your scope.
Henry Sanchez
I love advanced chopper model. I think I just spend 400+ hours for that
Julian Ross
how's that supposed to help me find people hiding or hanging around camophlaged?

Anthony Long
I'm the same way with TF2. Played it for many years and at times had the most fun in my whole life.
Also put time into making maps though none of them were any good.
Nowadays I've just played it too much and get tired of it again when I go back.
Tyler Davis
what does 1rrf mean?
Hudson Nelson
I keep getting shot by people I don't see.
I think you are supposed to practice moving between IR goggles/scopes and normal vision until you learn what to look for and wear to look first.
Andrew Nguyen

Did the mods on /vg/ kill it?
Parker Parker
It's a clan on Armaclans.
1rrf.net
Brayden Baker
Played with them a few times but couldn't full on join because of time constraints and work.
They have everything streamlined for their mods and it's a really cool group of guys. Some are ex military US/UK/DUTCH, realism made it fun and didn't feel forced or make me cringe like most arma groups.
Matthew Wood
>mods >/vg/ the players killed it
Aaron Collins
>feel forced or make me cringe like most arma groups.
>feel forced >cringy
Please explain.
the mods killed /kspg/
Isaac Wood
lack of good Arma 3 servers is a thing too. I'd prob play Arma 3 again if the CTI on it was any good, but the servers are all 99% "Liberation" compstomps, with the 1-2 actual active CTI servers requiring 25gigs of mods that dont really do anything except turn the servers into "muh sekrit club"
also when you get good enough at the game that you can land a helicopter upside down on it's rotors inside of a pine forest without crashing you kind of realise you've played it too much.
Jaxson Lee
Does the Compass get stuck for you guys too sometimes?
Like I press K to bring it up, then when I press or hold K to put it away nothing happens. This has almost gotten me killed since it obstructed my vision and the only way to make it go away it so look through my scope and that restricts my field of view.
what is CTI?
Jack Brown
Like 15 year old kids making you call them "sir" or other military ranks. Some even have "commanders office" in teamspeak and make people "knock" or get to "attention" on teamspeak. It is so cringey.
James Mitchell
keep K pressed to show the compass, double-pressing K will lock the compass on the screen, same applies for other items like the watch, you can change it by removing the keybind
Ethan Robinson
ah. So it's applying elementary school to a videogame so you can get a power kick off being teacher or teacher's pet
Gavin Sanders
its a fucking damn shame that cti is ruined. when i played ofp i put easily 1000+ hours into cti, one of the most creative and fucking awesome game modes around since that battlezone game back in the day
Xavier Allen
thank you. I didn't see the double pressing in the control setup in options.
Alexander Price
What made Capture The Island good? What ruined it?
Nathaniel Ortiz
Those larping fags are just the worst
Daniel Sanchez
Why I liked that 1rrf group. The guys were cool to a noob and no larping bs while playing with realistic tactics and most of then being veterans or active duty helped.
I didn't know how much the group you play with absolutely makes this game.
Nathaniel Wood
it used to be a 2-5 hour back and forth battle, with base building and a great mix between ai and human battles. the commander was an actual important part of the game and it gave you a better appreciation for the scale of the map
now the original mf/cr cti modes are gone, replaced by some weird fucking basically casualized version that is nothing like the first.
the map is almost too big for it now. i guess becti has been moved to arma 3, but the last time i tried to play it there were no servers that were on this side of the planet. pretty sure there was like 1 total anyways
Alexander Cook
>How many of you have played part of the ARMA series before?
Been playing since 2011.
Tried playing the way I played other games and had a hard time getting into it. It was interesting but I didn't know how to get into the community more. DayZ came out and that was better for just getting in and doing stuff solo and then I started getting really into it, and found it all enjoyable enough.
Picked up ARMA 3, and actually got into KOTH, Invade and Annex for a while, and some of the DayZ mods.
Soon found a good group that I fit in well with, started doing ops and fell in love with the game all over again. I'm actually a little upset I didn't manage to come across it earlier and didn't get into this sooner. Wish I did more stuff in ARMA 2 but oh well.
So yeah, ARMA is one of my favorite series of games.
Lucas Richardson
>How the duck do you learn to spot niggas in this thing?
I just started looking for movement or seeing a silhouette instead of trying to get any real detail out of it. Try to get binoculars when you can.
It's something I feel you just pick up more as you play it, how to find like a little cluster of 5-10 moving pixels and know it's an enemy, or at least bring it up to everyone's attention to confirm.
Angel Perry
a3g split up into AKB and expelled a bunch of people that were fucking it all up.
Ryder Foster
It's all a matter of degree. People who have in game PRT exams and will ban you for not saluting officers are cancer to me, but it is nice to have some organization and chain of command elements in those things to bring a nice flow and immersion to it.

Can you say that again, but explaining it as though you were talking to someone completely new to ARMA?

wow.
Jayden Barnes
it was a mixture of command and conquer and a shooter. a commander builds a base and manages resources (money). everyone else captures and holds towns to earn money for themselves and the team, and subsequently buys ai companions that they control. as the round goes on the commander gets to unlock upgrades for better equipment for the players and ai
Connor Flores
>tfw no arma group to join and randomly partake in a session maybe a few times a month while drunk

so did it become incompatible with updates to arma III or did people just leave it behind for other similar but different game modes under the same name?

ohhhhh those are solar power towers. I thought they were some kind of church bell towers since I've only seen them in the far distance.
Also very nice flying video.

So did he miss or did the tiltrotor just shrug off 40mm grenades?
Michael Wright

Brody Martinez
I think it just shrugged them off. It might have taken damage, but just not enough to start making it veer off.
Charles Barnes
Thank you all. I'm glad I started this thread. Good night. See you tomorrow if this is still up in the morning.
it went from 2 community mods for flashpoint to an 'official' game mode baked into the game which changed things up so people didnt want to play it, and all the other new game modes like shitty dayz took up the server slots for the real ones that were ported
Ethan Walker
there is a reason people call the game 'pixel hunting'
the foliage actually ends up working against you, because the ai essentially see through it all and will fuck you up while you are laying on the ground literally blind even in 3rd person
Owen Phillips
>because the ai essentially see through it all
Wasn't this one of the things Apex did was that it stopped AI from seeing through foilage and trees and shit so that they weren't insane in Tanoa's jungles?
Isaac Ortiz
maybe they changed it but i havent noticed much of a difference
John Turner
To be fair, ARMA's AI is so odd that it really could be either way and it'd be hard to tell a difference.
Landon Adams
Camo choice doesn't make a difference to the AI's ability to spot you or anything, right?
Nathan Edwards
...
Thomas King
Not in vanilla. There are certain AI scripts that actually check for that, but they only scale AI difficulty dynamically.

>AKB I searched for that. All I found was a thing about The Sims.

It's amazing when it comes together.
Caleb Hall
Probably from the alpha build or with an attach command in the editor.
Aaron Sanchez
Anybody ever put together a cross country race in Arma?
are their mods for vehicle damage from crashing or repairing damaged vehicles?
Brody Richardson
...
Andrew Watson
>are their mods for vehicle damage from crashing or repairing damaged vehicles? Not mods but scripts. It's easy to implement the necessary stuff inside the mission. The KART DLC is probably what you're looking for if you refuse to settle with the available racing maps in the Steam Workshop.
James Brooks
Is there singleplayer stuff for Arma 2/3? Is it good?
Thomas Baker
I am looking forward to ArmA 4. Hope they just stick to present time or go far future. ArmA 3 is nice, but the added tech is just ... meh.
Luis Wright
Don't expect an epic cinematic over the top linear corridor campaign. It's great for what it is and gives you quite some freedom with a nice "realistic" background. Also it's really challenging.
If you're done with the campaign, the steam workshop contains a shitload of really well made user missions.
