I put RE1 and Re2 in the same tier.
I haven't played RE3 in awhile, so i cant rank that right now, but Re1 and 2 are better than the rest

they are way more likeable characters memes aside

In RE1 you have soldier man,soldier girl,old soldier guy,young recruit and the traitor boss...they are kinda bland...only in the later games they keep getting more and more development

In RE2 you got naive but good hearthed rookie cop,soldier man sister(and that helps develop chris character)secret chinese spy,a child with a tragic parent problems...all look more relatable

They are all great, but 2 is my favorite. Can't say exactly why either. Maybe because it was the first RE game to have a city overrun by zombies, Leon has a dope ass uniform, and the game just felt a lot bigger and grander than the first. Also Claire and Leon complemented each other well as far as their differences in design and story goes.

Most people probably started with RE2. Plus 2 is actually a pretty great sequel in the gameplay department. It's debatable however, if the design side of 2 is better than 1. I personally think 1 has better level design and pacing, and prefer 1 over 2 because of this.

RE1 was the Mansion, the back of the mansion? underground laboratory, that it?

RE2 has:

-Police Station(Pretty dam good location, logically we as humans will move towards police stations for protection, ammunition, and people capable of defending us, so felt INCREDIBLE realistic at the time)
-The Sewers to attempt to escape the Police Station(The game felt like you were really trying to escape most of the time, another plus)
-A WAY better Umbrella Corporation laboratories
-Underground train


RE2 Is just WAY better than RE1, better graphics, better writing, more interesting locations and characters, is just a better game overall, I can hardly see people disagreeing unless you never really played it.

Let me be contrarian here and say that RE1 > RE2 +3. While true, RE1 had plotholes of its own, it was mostly just literally contained within the mansion premises and minor comedic shiet. The gaps widen with each sequel and almost always the chances to correct stuff aren't utilized.

With the rest not really mattering much for me to even bother rating them. The reason 2 is looked at so fondly is because it took the two character concept introduced in the first game and improved it by giving each character their own disc with A/B scenario's for each.

It also had increased action that didn't go overboard like the other half of the series, it expanded on the story, and just felt more epic in general.

I couldn't hate anybody that prefers 1 and/or 3 since to me the first three games were fantastic.

RE2 appealed to a wider playerbase because of amped up action and the fact you could play it on either PSX or N64. It was also pretty much a perfect sequel that was just different enough from the first game, meanwhile RE3 felt like RE2.5 or just another scenario instead of a fully fledged sequel.
