DoA was originally "crippled" by the creator's want for the characters to be more like his daughters or something. Basically they were HIS specific designs.

So they all ended up doll-like, similar proportions (or exact bodies depending on the game), and next to no personalities. On top of a passable but ultimately bleh fighting gameplay, basically its just really low end fan service.

I think the creator is no longer in charge though, but they've been making really bad decisions with microtransactions and actually cutting girls from the latest Xtreme game.

I have played DOA5, and DOA5:U before I got sick of the jewery and dropped the game when LR came out. The faces in 5 are not as expressive, but it's to be expected, as it's an older game, fighting games don't need lots of expressions, and the Xtreme series has always been something that TN used to try out new tech to be implemented in future installments of the fighter.
