I've tried to get into this game a few different times but I always run into the same damn problem that for whatever reason I cannot get a food economy going.

I've followed a few different youtube guides but I don't know what I'm doing wrong, shit always breaks down and my food supplies always run dry.

It's too bad too because I actually really enjoy the game.

they only real thing would be a CPU, the game is extremely intensive in the late game, you can alleviate this be restricting caps

This is mostly a meme nowadays, but in general the longer you play the game the more intensive it becomes on your CPU.

I used to do it, but since I've been playing roguelike like *bands and playing lots of pathfinder I find the need to do it less and less.

Oh god don't remind me, I fucking stall on the first entry because none of my designs look right.
I've been cheating by just carving out cave formations in the caverns, that has an aesthetic of its own, even if it is rarely efficient.

I was able to run one of the early 0.4x.x version on pic related. It runs as slow as molasses where it takes a good five seconds to move in adventure mode.

On more the recent version I run DF on a 2014 Intel Atom netbook, FPS tends to fluctuate between 10FPS and 25FPS on a busy ~80 pop fort.

that's the worst bit. I try and plan out in notepad or something what the floors are going to look like, keeping industries together, etc. Then I start building and designing and before you know it my fort looks like ass and it's only OK in efficiency.

Toady is the only developer I give the benefit of the doubt. He can claim all kinds of outrageous things about Dorf Fort and I'll still believe him.

He has published research in hard math. If the dude's ambitious, it's something that can easily be reached.

The only doubts I have about Toady are his ability to eventually derive a multi-threaded version. OpenMP is a huuuuge piece of shit and he'd have to manually designate how to break up each process. You could get huge gains just splitting entity pathfinding between threads, but besides that it's a lot of difficult streamlining.

How much do you guys pause when you play dorf fort? I feel like I don't plan out my forts very much and it ends up being mediocre and unsatisfying. Am I just retarded?

Yeah I find it a lot more satisfying when I carefully plan out my forts.
I've had a lot of fun sketching out caravan drowning rooms and impenetrable defenses on paper before implementing them
