Because her games sell like dogshit in Nintendo's home country. It's a series specifically designed after and influenced by Alien, in a country that hates hard sci-fi.

Nintendo isn't a small-time company like Falcom where that issue would apply. Global sales absolutely matter to Nintendo's bottom line, on their home turf and off.

Japan has never liked Metroid.
Nintendo has no idea what the west likes about Metroid.
Nintendo hates that Metroid Prime was so popular.
Other M was part Sakamoto's creepy ass, part Nintendo trying to Japanify Metroid as hard as possible, only causing an all-around failure.

Honestly, what Metroid could really benefit from and actually see a kickstart to the series is a Breath of the Wild treatment. Not the core gameplay of course, but the aimless wandering, environmental manipulation and survival elements.

But they've still said they'll give Retro priority when it comes to making another Metroid.

There'd certainly be some assistance needed, like I wouldn't trust Nintendo to make another good Metroid game themselves. Just go the Sonic Mania route at this point.

Metroid has was less appeal among casuals than the rest of Nintendo's lineup, but attempts to make it more casual friendly were met with fierce resistance from the core.

Then they thought they could try to use the name to sell a completely different game to make both parties happy, which didn't work because virtually everyone hated the game anyway.

Now they don't know what they want to do so they are letting the series rot.

Depends on which part of Nintendo you're talking about. Remember that Miyamoto had a pretty big role in the first Prime game.

I have zero doubt that Sakamoto is jealous of Prime's success but I think it's more jealously over Miyamoto than Retro Studios.

Those two dudes used to run rival departments within Nintendo, and that rivalry has been hilariously one sided ever since the SNES.
