When did the Golden Age of Gaming end in your opinion, Sup Forums?
For me it was in 2008
It started in 2017.
7th gen consoles killed it. But it's arguable when exactly it happened. Sometime between 2005 and 2009.
When I grew up and had to be responsible for myself.
2005, though we've started recovering slowly.
When I stopped having the kind of free time and energy that permitted me to marathon a 60-80 hour RPG in a single week, so around 2012. Honestly, the industry has always had up and down years, and I think the reason we remember 6th gen so fondly is because the PS2 (and Xbox, later on) was fairly cheap to develop for and we got a mountain of really unique games during it and its fellow consoles' run. It dipped in 7th gen due to the spike in development costs, making risky titles a rarity, but now we're getting back into the swing of things with lowering development costs and the tide of indies being more effectively filtered by the death of the auteur worship that pervaded that subculture during the time of Phil Fish and his masturbatory ilk. Yeah, there's still a bunch of boring shit coming out, but there's also a lot of great games being released.
holy FUCK i miss burning crusade
Probably 2007 or 2008. A lot of great games have came out afterwards but that still doesn't change the fact that gaming declined big time afterwards. Golden years were basically late 80's to the mid 2000's. That is when the best innovations happened.
Also this pretty much. 7th gen consoles is the true cancer because of everything it brought to gaming.
>you will never play BC retail again
When Big Bang Theory came out
We're in the golden age right now.
Peaked in '98, died with the ps2
Alright, I'll bite
what exactly is contributing to this golden age of 2017?
Beginning of 7th gen.
The golden age is always the moment when you are a child
Battle Brothers.
It ended in 2001.
So close. I'm going with 2009.
Zelda and Nier
Persona is out soon, and the Switch is going into full gear. Maybe not 2017 specifically, but the future is looking bright.
1991
Around 2004, after Halo 2 the era of too much scripted gameplay started and most games started to feel like shitty cash grabs.
How? The real golden age was from about 1989 to 1998. Everything was still okay until about 2001.
But two games aren't enough user
A golden age constitutes a general quality production on average. But yeah, I can see us *probably* going towards that direction, if the gaming industry manages to stop with the autistic political agendas and make games what they're supposed to be - games, not a political propaganda poster that you can play with
2005
Two games are enough when they're better than everything released in the last year combined.
between 2005 and 2009 pretty much
>i am le ebin baiter xD
kys
When the first playstation was commercialized.
We had a lot of great games since then, but the way games were perceived changed completely, they became more and more a fashion and the industry started to lost creativity, many old games require a couple of hours to be completed, but they still have a great replay value, nowaday the replay value is almost nonexistent, and developers replaced it with estremely long contents that adds hours and hours to the game experience, modern average games last around 50 or 100 hours of play, but once finished how many of them were played again? Very, very few.
Who are you quoting?
The golden age of video games never ended, but there was peak in 2005-2007 and then a large slump in 2012-2014 but we're slowly recovering.
1995-2005 was god-tier, developers took chances more, new IP's every year and everything was advancing at an enormous pace.
Fast forward to today, companies don't take risks anymore, clones of clones, it's AAA or Indie nothing inbetween.
When everyone stopped playing GW
pretty much this. once the carefree days of your adolescence ends and you enter the responsibility of the real world vidya games just aren't the same.
Ended in 2009 ish
That's what modern games lack re-playability and going back and enjoying what you missed and finding secrets. All the games try to make sure the main campaign is all that there is without providing extra goodies and or having a terrible story that is not worth remembering. What modern games lack like you said is the ability to look back and remember a good game and replay it and being able to discuss with other people how great it was.
>Slowly recovering when day 1 patches, paid DLC, unfinished games, early access, Kickstarters, episodic releases, loot boxes are huge things nowadays
No user, just no.
Hello r3ddit!
hi
in 2005 big buisness took over after they saw halo 2 rake in millions and they realized it could be the next movie industry. And then in 2012 when we thought things might be bouncing back with bloated budget mmo's tanking and indie games like minecraft raking in millions, sjw cancer shit started infesting everything and indie games turned into early access half baked shit.
I guess it cant get much worse than this?
2004
2004 was the best year for gayman, it never recovered since then
2007 was okay though but a big sign of the end times
When did the NGE drop?
Perfectly put. The vast majority of despicable practices in the industry started in or around that period.
2002 or 3 probably
Before you were born.
Not the anime you idiot, what would that have to do with video games
user as soon there's enough infrastructure all games will go on 100% stream.
It will get worse I can sure you that
RIP.
m-maybe people will stop buying games as a protest by then?
lol imagine being this retarded
2013 when next gen or i would say 8th generation (?) consoles started appearing
i disagree, we have less and less risky games now than we had in the ps3/x360 era, now games are aiming too much into the casual multiplayer department or your usual open-world or linear fps games with no originality at all
>80% of the replies ITT are unironically related to consoles
what the actual fuck
Sup Forums is dead
thats all the future can offer ??? seens pretty low even thought those games are excellent, its just them and nothing else there
Most people experience gaming on consoles faggot. Get over yourself.
I think it died in 2013.
2010
i miss old tf2 with my friends
Yeah, I agree. 2008, probably for a variety of reasons:
> Wii's best games library peaked
> AAA games industry figured out which games sold and stopped taking risks
> E3 had functionally ended after 2006 and the results would never be the same again even after restructuring
> Gaming media started to hire the wrong people
> Mobile games.
> Valve released Portal, their last real IP
> Activision Blizzard was founded that year
Earlier than that to be honest. But the last golden age ended in around 2004 after the release of wow and hl2
Whenever SJWs started pushing for less sexiness in games and mary sue female protagonists.
Shut up
gaming officially died with the the release of ps3, xbox 360, etc
...
2008 sounds about right.
2015 i think, technological advancement allows us to make even greater games. sure there might be some shit turds but most of th games that have come out last few years were pretty awesome
impressionable underage.
