Their tradeoffs balance each other out.

Story wise - KOTOR 2
Gameplay wise (as in - more finished and playable) - KOTOR 1
Even with TSLRCM I ran into some game breaking bugs that didn't let me progress in game so I had to restart the whole campaign.

I tried to play kotor for the first time recently. it just crashed to desktop when i tried to start the game

is this a known bug with a fix

if you mean it crashed when you clicked on new game and made a character, then it's a known bug with something in the options menu. try turning off soft shadows if you can

I never changed any ini files myself. I thought the game held up pretty well for its age in terms of graphics. Your resolution options might be kinda small in the first game but it's easy to get used to. Only thing I changed in regards to any options was mapping left and right movement to my a and d keys, I've no idea why that wasn't the default.

Kotor II's gameplay is superior, although not by much. It's definitely easier to break than I.

Story-wise it's apples and oranges. I prefer 2, but I definitely do not regret playing 1.

Kotor 2 had its problems but Kreia is one of my favorite characters in any game
Kotor 1 doesn't really have anything going for it

Kotor 1 is more broken than 2 after TSLRCM
Kotor has better game play in terms of actual game play and also play ability if you have TSLRCM

Kotor 1 was just not very memorable to me.

In terms of gameplay, both are more or less the same. I don't think I can say one is appreciably better than the other. I prefer the writing of the second game.

Both are good games that I enjoyed playing.
KOTOR 1 was a straight forward story set in the star wars universe and 2 was a deconstruction of that universe

Which you like more depends on which of those things you enjoy more

in KOTOR 1 you get the same story no matter the gender you pick.
in KOTOR 2 if you pick the female exile you get the fucking Disciple.

Kotor 2 has better companions.
HK-47, Canderous and Jolee were the only ones that were actually amusing to talk with. Mission never shuts up about her brother and the "I'm not a child y'know" act. Carth takes too much time to become likable and I really think Bastila's only liked because of Jennifer Hale's voice. Her character is nothing exceptional and the "romance" is quite shallow.
I don't even remember the Wookie and the Cat-girl's name.

KOTOR 1 doesn't have Space Jesus while KOTOR 2 does.

When I completed KOTOR1, I honestly disliked it (probably because I was already sick of it during the last planet that feels rushed as shit, and the shitty light-side ending), but playing KOTOR2 made me appreciate the first one a bit more.

I agree with , both are more of less the same to me for different reasons. For example I liked most of KOTOR1's party members (not all of them, though) while I wanted to throw pretty much everyone from KOTOR 2 out of my ship (except for grandma Kreia, and walking dick-sucking lips can stay for eye candy), but I enjoyed KOTOR2's story far more than KOTOR1's.

I can agree with that (since the game as a whole is better written than the first one), but I still wanted to throw every single one of them out of my ship, except Kreia and Visas. I tried to listen the backstories of some of them but that just made me want to watch them slowly die after I throw them out of the ship. I just don't like most of them.
KOTOR1's party have very simple personalities, but they are mostly inoffensive, except when you follow the dark side but that is part of the fun.

I enjoyed Kotor II more.

I played Kotor II like 7 or 8 years ago. I was young and the dark force witch lady scared me. That said, I like the story more. I kind of think Bioware ripped them off a bit; mostly because of the main space station called "The Citadel" in both games. I dunno

I recently, like 2 years ago started playing Kotor and it was boring.

Space jesus harem in KOTOR 2 is the best thing in the entire EU

I've played 1 and 2 (with restoration mod) back to back last year and 2 is waaay better in a sense it has better characters and so much different routes you can take. I've replayed it for 3-4 times in a month so I can see all the possibilites, no matter how slight they were. Still liked Revan much more than Exile, and I hate that autist Bao-Dur

Go for Mira. She's more interesting. But as said, if you're darkside you get the wookie. If you're going for a darkside run, do Nar Shaddaa first so you can stay at least neutral so you can get Mira.

KOTOR 1 because it actually has an ending. And no, the RCM does jack shit to help anything with KOTOR 2's quality.

Pretty much. You learn essentially everything relevant about his backstory during the Nar Shaddaa storyline, and really the only reason to have him around is if you really feel like breaking someone who is already utterly broken to begin with.
