Fun in videogames

>"OH BOY, IM HAVING SO MUCH FUN PLAYING THIS VIDEOGAME THAT I DONT CARE ABOUT WHAT THE OUTCOME IS! IF I WIN, GREAT! IF I LOSE, IT DOESNT MATTER THAT MUCH!"

How the fuck do people have fun like this?

Do people un-ironically do this? Do you actually sit there and smile and be all happy while playing the videogame instead of feeling happy after you reach your end goal?

Are you so delusional that you are having fake fun during the journey and not basking in the enjoyment of the destination?

If you really do feel like this, just know that your way of having fun is wrong.

nice blogpost
try tumblr next time you fucking faggot

I can have fun in the journey, but if I lose too much in a short time I end up frustrated. So it's a little of both for me I guess.

I get that feeling sometimes, normally happens when I'm near the end of something and the music is too good

>2017
>having fun

No one actually does this. They just pretend they do, to feel superior.

wait so you dont actually enjoy playing video games and you just like crossing off checklists and feeling accomplished?

why the fuck do you even play video games then? why not....like...work? you can cross of tons of check lists and actually get paid to do it.

Instant reward

BROWN

>"i have never accomplised anything in a videogame ever, and im having fun!"

instant hollow as fuck reward. if you care about rewards you should be chasing money not achievements

I can maybe get where you're coming from for single player games, having a game that wrecks your shit over and over isn't fun to most people. But for multiplayer games? All I want is a good, challenging match-up. Winning is obviously preferred, but losing is inevitably going to happen. I'd have much more fun narrowly losing against a person/team that's closely matched to my skill level than I would stomping some people who can't even hope to compete with me.

ummmm wow sweetie, you need to calm down. it's just a game honey bun, don't wet your little big boy diaper over it.

let people enjoy the game however they want mkay snookums?

SOTP

I had sometimes more fun jumping in circles on the bank roof in vanilla wow than when I actually finished a game.
If this is wrong well fuck you.

I'd rather have fun achieving the end goal than being happy that I'm having fake fun regardless of what happens.

it's like getting a fucking participation trophy.

>basking in the enjoyment of the destination
But when you reach the destination the game is over. How can that be enjoyable? How can you enjoy nothingness?

It's entirely possible to feel that way unironically in a lot of games, especially longer ones or some where winning isn't possible/likely. Like any Total War or Grand Strategy game, it's fun to see what the AI in all its' stupidity does from time to time. Or in Dorf when something goes catastrophically wrong but you can't help but laugh because of the circumstances. What about every roguelite ever where you either die or get some hilariously overpowered item combo that steamrolls the game. Yeah, I and just about everyone would be pissed if we lost at everything we ever played in our lives, and winnings important for sure. But you can't tell me that dying in a hilarious way doesn't make you chuckle a bit, regardless of the game.

>fake fun

>this entire post
user, are you ok?

Is that Steve Buscemi?

Did you seriously just type out a long post explaining basic storytelling in the most hamfisted way possible?

Vidya is like motor bike touring. The journey is the main part of it. The destination can be your home or just some random place.

I bet OP is white

if you really have no other happiness in life than winning in video games you are very pitiable

people who have fun with games regardless of win or loss have other happiness to fall back on, like a normal person

seek help

Nintendo fanboys do this all the time. Posting botw on facebook "ohh gaammee is so cool"
Lies!

fun is just a buzzword when you can't think of any reasons as to why the game is good, don't use it.

either way, being amused or entertained with something and being immersed are not the same thing

>I DONT CARE ABOUT WHAT THE OUTCOME IS! IF I WIN, GREAT! IF I LOSE, IT DOESNT MATTER THAT MUCH!"
I agree with you on this. It's like they get a trophy in their mind whatever happens.

>tfw he was right all along

>It's like they get a trophy in their mind whatever happens
No, it isn't. It's that they don't care about whether or not they get a trophy. That's why OP is being mocked. If you need to get a trophy at the end to justify your journey then you're doing something wrong.

Obligatory. I hate these fucking fucks. Winning is fun, so why are you sacrificing everyone else's fun for your own? Why even go on a competitive game if you don't want to play competitively even a little?

i just cant understand how someone feels "fun".

Like im not even memeing right now.

Let me put it to you this way, if something stupid were to happen to me and friends in San Andreas online, sure , we laugh and its funny.

If im playing a game and the end goal is to win, i am not having fun getting there. I feel enjoyment and accomplishment when I reach my goal.

Like seriously, what is fun?

I've read a lot of autistic shit on Sup Forums but I think this wins. I am eager to see what even further retarded autism Sup Forums can produce. I knew a post like this coming

Easy and current example is BotW
Finishing the game and fighting Ganon was garbage but I went right back in to finish exploring and completing side quests.
No one plays Minecraft for the end game,

I can enjoy myself playing Gmod doing absolutely nothing

If a game has a clear objective, I only want to do all i can to win and i expect that from everyone else, and thats how i enjoy myself

does this make any sense?

like how exactly is losing, or experiencing the process of losing any fun at all

Yeah you really don't understand, it's subjective. I used to spend hours driving and flying around with my friends in Just Cause 2 multiplayer. There was no goal, no reward, it was just the feeling of going fast and flying around, crashing into trees, knocking each other off cliffs, that was all fun as fuck. Those are some of my best memories in video games. Just flooring it down a mountain on a dirt bike. That's fun to me.
>people still post this retarded strawman pic

So you think that people should play the game wrong on purpose then pretend they're having fun by losing?

I think just don't try to neurotically get 100% in any collectathons. Or, you know, if the mission is stupid and suggests you "collect 5 potatoes" just don't do it. I have never felt fun/accomlishment from fetch quests or completionist goals, since it only takes time.

You have to just laugh the first time a giant in Skyrim hits you

it's part of the game

it's like looking at a math problem. Say you already know the answer, half the fun is in solving it, not in rushing the thing.

>like how exactly is losing, or experiencing the process of losing any fun at all
its not and no one is saying it is. even in OP's retarded reductio ad absurdum meme post he says "IF I LOSE, IT DOESNT MATTER THAT MUCH!" which is a completely okay and healthy mindset to have about a fucking video game. losing isnt fun but it doesnt have to be the end of the world

>i cant win so i convince myself that losing is fun

>So you think something completely unrelated to what you said? :^)

>Thinking it's strawman
If you play a competitive game and deflect when you lose then you probably shouldn't be playing that with a guy who wants to play it more seriously

Neither person is in the wrong

pathetic

You seem to have disagreed with the image. I asked you if you agreed with the opposite of what the image implies.

i bet you're one of those faggots who thinks car is just getting from point a to b

It's not about the goal its about the journey.

if you are playing a competitive game and not playing meta characters, you are essentially doing yourself harm.

if you play competitive, you should do all you can to win, no matter what.

>pretend they're having fun
Maybe you've never played a game with friends just to do some dumb shit, but it's definitely not 'pretend' fun. Even something as relatively simple as trying to gun your way down the mountain in GTAV in a motorbike can be dickloads of fun with you and your friends trying to figure out how to do it without eating shit, while having a laugh at everyone who eats said shit.

I envy the people who find enjoyment in simple things.

>Let me put it to you this way, if something stupid were to happen to me and friends in San Andreas online, sure , we laugh and its funny.

are you enjoying that time spent? then that's fucking fun, you lizard person

>"i am having so much fun on my journey driving on autopilot to my vacation spot."
>"even if i dont get to my vacation spot and end up in a nigger infested ghetto, and get killed, hey at least i had fun xDdd"

Theyre autistic losers who gave up on winning. They calm themselves thinking that its all about "le journey XD"

Sorry that I didn't grow up with timewasting turdpiles like minecraft and get fun out of nothing like you autists

Are you underage or something?

I know this is a bait thread, but fuck you.
What's the point of playing a game if the only enjoyment you get is when you finish it?

My wife is unironically exactly like that. I stopped playing with her because she doesn't care about getting better.

You didn't even read the initial post. I wasn't talking about a sandbox like GTAV. I said a competitive game. Being retarded is one thing is you're just fucking around, but being retarded and then saying "It's just a game, bro. Stop being so serious I'm just having fun" is another, which is what OP was posting about. People like.

It's a straw man because no one acts like that, it's an exaggerated biased view to make a point seem like it has more weight than it really does. An unbiased version would be two people playing tic-tac-toe, one guy taking it more seriously but the other guy at least still putting in some effort, and then when the less serious guy loses he just shrugs it off because it's not a huge deal to him. No one has ever just scribbled all over a tic-tac-toe sheet and then said LOL I WASNT EVEN TRYING WHY DO YOU CARE SO MUCH.

This is completely dependent on the game.

I do enjoy the challenge and games like XCOM and FTL let me have fun even if I lose, while I do not feel like fun is dependent on wether I win or not I do try to win because that's how I feel the game should be played.

I understand that I cannot win every single game of DotA but there is a difference between being honestly outplayed by the enemy team and losing because your team consist of a bunch of (badly) trained monkeys.

It's all about time spent VS. time wasted.
Let's say I'm playing ranked Rainbow Six. If I keep getting killed at the start of each round, then even if we win I'm still not enjoying myself because I'm essentially spectating my team.
Or let's say I'm playing ranked Overwatch. If my team insists on having shit team comps, then I have to spend that time in game knowing that my chances of winning are lesser because of my teammates.
Those situations where you're just waiting for the timer to finish are not fun, journey or destination be damned.

>It's a straw man because no one acts like that
You're joking right? People do this shit all the time. Actually play an online game before you post about online games.

The problem with the person that lost in this case is that he's a fucking loser who has no confidence in himself and won't even try to improve his skill.

he literally excuses his laziness for "its just a game brooooo xDd"

What if man run out and do funny scream?

Only if it's PvP stuff, because there is the expectation that you're going to lose 50% of the time in any fair match.

No, that's a projection. He could be very successful or competitive when it comes to other things, maybe he just doesn't want to tic-tac-toe dead seriously because it is literally just a game.
I've probably been playing online games longer than you have been alive. The only thing I've ever come across that would fit that image is the friendly phenomenon in TF2. But friendly fags only exist on the servers and maps that already have no goals anyways. Hightower and 2Fort maps that go on literally forever because no one wants to play the objective and they just want to duel and fuck around. In all my tens of thousands of hours playing online competitive games I've never come across anything else even remotely similar to that retarded tic tac toe image.

To be fair OP left his post pretty ambiguous as to whether he was talking about single player games or not, and I was responding to a comment thread about a mostly co-op game.

As for multiplayer games it's a different story, but I'd prefer to lose narrowly than to stomp completely. Most of the fun is in the competition, regardless of if you win or lose, even though you're obviously going to try to and prefer winning.

>I've probably been playing online games longer than you have been alive and I've never encountered this thing that happens daily in every online game ever but most especially mobas and shooters and mobashooters
Epic. Are you going to reply to me with "LOL XD ASSFAGGOTS I DON'T PLAY THOSE LE PLEBIAN GAMES" when you play TF2, a game with arguably the highest amount of children in it.

>maybe he just doesn't want to tic-tac-toe dead seriously because it is literally just a game.
There is a difference between playing casually and arbitrarily playing the game wrong. If you don't want to play the why the fuck get into the game in the first place?

Also imagine you are playing Soccer/football in the street, if you scored on your own goal or ran around just being an idiot under the excuse that "is just a game" you would literally get kicked by both teams and nobody would ever play with you again.

What the hell how can you not enjoy yourself playing video games. You sit there for hours, not being entertained, just to have a 3 second joy from winning a game? You don't actually enjoy the gameplay? So then why don't you just play some game you know you'll always win, like against children or something or make up some game in your mind and say you won since the actual game itself doesn't matter to you. Winning is more fun than losing, but only playing to win, and not actually enjoying the gameplay, thats retarded. Also many times for me it's more fun using a worse strategy for winning. Like in Pokemon Showdown, the best teams are stall teams, which I hate and would never use because they take no skill and make the games take forever, I would win more if I used it though. I have more fun not using stall than I would if I used it and won more. Or in Yugioh, I could just copy and paste the top tournament winning decks but I prefer making and playing my own decks.

In order for this to equate to the strawman image they would have to have been sitting in spawn for the entire game making fart noises into the microphone, not just playing a non meta character and performing poorly.
I agree with everything in this post. I don't know what you're trying to argue with me on. I'm saying that tic tac toe image is retarded because it doesn't understand the "difference between playing casually and arbitrarily playing the game wrong."

I've experienced fun on the losing side before. Those few cases where I was laughing too hard with friends, or did enough awesome shit that I didn't care about the eventual outcome.

Or back in the day when I was so psyched by the potential within a game that I just wanted to play more and more of it until I knew everything about it. That sense of early exploration.

>What the hell how can you not enjoy yourself playing video games.
eh

All I feel playing games is anxiety. I really dislike losing and my innate grasp of game mechanics as well as my coordination have been pretty poor since I was a kid so I'm pretty shit at most games

I give up a lot and tell myself I just have a short attention span. Oh well, it's the closest thing to enjoyment I get out of anything in life besides hoarding piles of money from my okay wages and spending as little as possible

>sitting in spawn for the entire game making fart noises into the microphone
You think this doesn't happen either? Kids do the darndest things when they get upset. I have seen it happen so many times in mobas where someone pulls a hissy fit and sit in spawn, not afk, and just start arguing or saying random passive aggressive shit and it's even worse on mics because they possibly WILL just start making fart sounds. Seriously, I really don't think you've played as much as you claim to.

Yes, it is the challenge that is fun. I'm not so fucking pathetic I need validation from winning a videogame of all things to feel enjoyment.

What the fuck are you on about you cooked cunt, how are you calling people autistic when your only fun is completing shit and what winning? Those are literally sign of autism if you cant have fun while playing a fucking game, what DO YOU MEAN you dont have fun while playing the game, thats what games are fucking meant for. Holy shit

But that's a completely different context and now the goalposts are being moved. Sitting in spawn making fart noises in an effort to throw the game because you want to troll your team is not the same thing as sitting in spawn making fart noises because its "fun" or whatever. I experience the former on the daily basis, just today some guy on my team threw a game in Overwatch because he was pissed off. I've never experienced the latter, unless again its in a completely uncompetitive environment like a random 2Fort server.

Because the tic tac toe pic does not represent a "casual" style of play, it represents someone arbitrarily playing the game wrong under the excuse that he is playing casually.

>But that's a completely different context and now the goalposts are being moved
>When I fucking used your exact words in my post
I'm done with you. You're just spouting buzzwords and pretending to be an online game expert without playing any. You're just going to use a different buzzword each post while telling me "nothing you say ever happens. That's not even related to what I said." Fuck off. I give up.

>It's a straw man because no one acts like that
This happens all the time when a tryhard that doesn't know how to play gets confrontational after losing

Normal, non-autistic people derive enjoyment from /the act of competing alone/. It is pushing yourself which is found enjoyable, the winning is ju8st something extra on top.

People saying they enjoy the journey and not the destination aren't saying they like fucking around, they're saying that winning isn't literally the most important thing, enjoying themselves is while competing is.

You're done because you lost and you know it. You've taken your argument from "shitters sit in spawn and make fart noises because they dont take the game seriously enough" to "shitters sit in spawn make fart noises because theyre angry about something and they want to piss of their team"

One actually happens all the time and one doesn't, and I've only been talking about the one that doesn't happen. You've completely moved the goalposts.

This thread is gold

While I do agree that people throwing the game because they're upset happens way more often than people throwing the game "for fun" the later does happen and is sadly more common than any of us would want to admit.

sir bowie gets it
/thread

Is his thread a secret moba bitching thread where OP had someone on his team who didn't care that their team lost?

Because the mindset that all mobas put into the lowlifes who play them is that its all competitive, even for beginners. What it should be is the guy having casual fun is doing it right and OP is a fag.

because

who is gay?

(You)

t. loser risen by single mother

>How the fuck do people have fun like this?
Because they're not colossal autists.

>Are you so delusional that you are having fake fun during the journey and not basking in the enjoyment of the destination?
So just because your tiny, autism-riddled brain can't understand the concept of people enjoying things you don't, it's "fake fun"?

>Do you actually sit there and smile and be all happy while playing the videogame instead of feeling happy after you reach your end goal?
Yes. Because it's FUN. Video games aren't literally the only thing in their lives they can struggle to find any sense of accomplishment in, so they don't care too much if they finish off some arbitrary checklist of 'accomplishments' in one.

tl:dr Nobody cares about your sick gamer score, autismo.

This is why competitive videogames are for retards and I mostly play single player.

>defeats a high-ranking general of the Demon King's army though luck and perseverance
>winds up in massive debt because of Aqua
>manages to deactivate a malfunctioned magical death machine/mobile fortress by the skin of his teeth
>gets arrested for unintentionally blowing up a noble's mansion
>that one time Darkness' masochism got him beheaded by a winter demon samurai spirit

Being Kazuma is suffering.

In single player and 1v1 games? I feel this because I know I tried my hardest and was challenged. My loss was my own so it doesn't sting as much because I know that it was my fault.
In a team based multiplayer game where my whole team was on point? I still feel that because we all put in a good effort. We could have all worked a bit harder but there's fun to be had facing an enemy who's just plain better or took a small opening and ran with it.
In a competitive team based game where one or all of my team-mates let me down? I get fucking furious. Splatoon probably permanently raised my blood pressure.

>fake fun

Holy shit user, you are fucked. People really CAN enjoy what they want you know? We could use the same logic about "real games" posted on Sup Forums.
How easy it to just say "no one actually ENJOYS souls games, its just talked about and played by people who want e-peen points and a desperate to fit in."

Imagine being such a loser that you seek validation from winning in videogames and not enjoyment from merely playing them. Glad I'm not that autistic about my entertainment.

whatever nerd at least I can just fuck my girlfriend lol
