Is this like Myst?
Will it make me feel like a kid again?

No, and that's a good thing because Myst is terrible.
if myst is what you want, check out Obduction. The Witness was an alright game, but it boils down to one increasingly complicated puzzle type.
no myst actually had fun puzzles
if you want a good puzzle game play talos or portal games with community maps and mods not potato story mode.
>boils down to one increasingly complicated puzzle type.
But so does Myst? The only puzzles in the Myst games are based around "What does this button do?".
It's nothing like Myst
It's basically a graphic interface for maze puzzles where the rules of the mazes (ie what the correct solution is) sometimes needs to be deduced from the environment or other puzzles
you can beat the game in 5 minutes
That damn energy bridge in Obduction frustrated me so much and I haven't been back to it. Having to wait for the world to load every time was painful.
The Witness is great though OP. I recommend it. There's far more than one puzzle type. Yes the input method for all of them is the same but there are so many variations it's a completely unfair claim to make.
It's a fun game. Very much worth playing through.
>but it boils down to one increasingly complicated puzzle type.
But every section of the island has a different puzzle type.
This game is a lot better than Obduction.
Fuck, didn't add picture.
Myst is much more based in reality. If you're somewhere and you figure out you need to turn a machine on because there's a door blocking your path and it seems like it's the only way to go and you follow a cable that leads to a lever, you can figure out that you should pull that level without any explanation, and this would have been no different than had you actually been in a real place like that
The Witness is an abstraction of the same basic idea, sure, but it's much less brilliant in that regard. Figuring out that 3 triangles means a line has to touch 3 sides of a square means what in reality? Nothing. You're just wandering around an island solving mazes for no rhyme or reason.
It's basically an interactive sudoku puzzle with some decently creative tricks and a super pretentious "narrative"
It completely lacks all the adventure feel of the old Myst games. In exchange you get some more fun puzzles.
this is a pretty good description
Myst 1 is 90% just basic logic puzzles like The Witness, Myst 2 has a lot of bullshit that makes no logical sense, but Myst 3 is great.
i feel like myst is an actual adventure, whereas the witness is more like a math textbook. you go through the questions each one introducing a new idea or twist on what preceded it. at times it's great when it properly meshes with the environment, but some times the puzzles are kind of arbitrary in their placement, at least that's what i found at times.
i liked myst's world more too, riven was amazing. the witness has beautiful environments but they aren't connected to a good story (or any story imo) so it's difficult to make that emotional connection to the game
both myst and the witness have fucking terrible sound puzzles though.
>It completely lacks all the adventure feel of the old Myst games
pretty much how i felt as well. i wish obduction had been more adventure-y too, but my mistake was comparing it to riven which is a masterpiece that set the bar to heights we'll probably never see again.
I like The Witness mostly, but fuck me if I don't hate the environmental puzzles. It's basically "stand on the right pixel to get this shit to work"
Sound puzzles were a mistake.
What the fuck was Blow thinking? That it would be fun to listen to birds chirping while a telephone is ringing?
I'm still mad about that area. I want to make him listen to that on repeat for hours.
I liked some of the recordings but yeah the story didn't do much for me. I really enjoyed most of the puzzles and some of the hidden environmental puzzles were just mind boggling. Some were obvious but others must have taken a lot of work to get just right. The game got in my head and had me looking at things in real life trying to find the dot and line.
Areas ranked by FUN:
>hedge maze/tower
>symmetry peninsula
>shadowy desert
>tree shadows
>mountain
>monastery
>bunker
>bird chirp hell
>quarry
>marsh
>the story is literally about making a video game
>blow put footage of himself making the game in the fucking game
The Witness is the most pretentious art ever created by man
>can't activate a side panel to play the sound on demand (like how the side panel resets the tile puzzles at the castle area)
>have to wait for it to play every time
>if you get it wrong the panel locks and you have to redo the previous one
>seriously begin to question the quality of the headphones and my own eardrums
You're not wrong about that.
Still the puzzles are good. You better really fucking like sliding dot puzzles if you're gonna play this.
>I didn't play Myst, but I've seen some funny memes about it!
I really love the witness but I really feel like a moron 90% of the time
tfw not smart enough
you're at least smart enough to recognize your inadequacy, when most people are not
you should take pride in that fact
That's not intelligence but confidence or arrogance.
a friend and I always say "just smart enough to know were stupid"
