The action is pretty subpar compared to other Platinum games. And the music is good, but not Nier good. The story is great, though. Overall, 7 or 8 for me.

Watch ending E of Drakengard 1 on Youtube. It's the only thing relevant to Nier and getting it is a huge pain in the ass that requires a ton of grinding in a mediocre game. You can play it if you want but it's not really neccesary. After that just play through the first Nier and read up on the stuff from Grimoire Nier and the drama CD about Emil. Honestly though you can just go in to Automata blind and still enjoy it. You'll miss out on some references and one side aspect will fall flat but you'll still enjoy the overall game.
