That's because brazilians who know other languages pass for non-brazilians. They try not to associate with other brazilian players and don't advertise their presence so you assume they aren't brazilian.
The only people who go "br? br?" are the unexperienced ones, which in turn creates the illusion that all brazilians are unexperienced.

The BRs showed them how annoying it is when someone else does it.

If they do it in f2p games it's because they don't know english, obviously, but still want to learn to play the game. If they can't read all of it in the game's language, the next best thing is ask someone who knows what's going on. Once they do learn english they pick up on the conversations about them, the impressions they're giving off, and decide that the best course of action to improve their game experience is to stop being perceived as brazilian. They might still help newer players but they don't have to seek out people who speak their language anymore so they're less of a bother.
English is most people's second language here and it's taught in schools so eventually they'll learn it and reach that stage, but by that point new players have shown up and the cycle continues.

It's more common for games to have dedicated spanish or chinese(?) servers than portuguese. Something else that might've influenced that is the fact that there was basically a monopoly on f2p MMO localizations for quite some time here by a shitty company called LevelUp Games, with questionable monetization practices, kinda like Nexus I believe for the US, which incentivized us to seek out servers in different languages. English being the most reachable, it became the usual route.
As for why it continues to this day, it's as I said earlier, brazilians who don't speak portuguese pass for any other nationality.

Something else that might influence this perceived ubiquity of shitty brazilian players is the fact that our computers are on average much shittier due to draconian importation taxes. It costs us 50% more to get computer parts on average, iirc. Weaker machines play fewer games, and the ones with slightly better computers might choose to not spend a lot of money on games, so it's either piracy or f2p games for a huge chunk of the community.

I'm not sure you can understand this without being from Brland or living there for some time, but Brazilian culture has gone to absolute shit and it's only getting worse. So it's really no wonder our internet culture is also absolutely shit and our comunities are toxic as fuck.

Most people who have the option to will never want to be associated with Brazil, especially online.
