What's with the big push towards consoles with 4k? Is that 50" 1080p screen in your living room not good enough anymore?

This has got to be a meme

IDGAF about 4k but I bought a TV a few months ago and all the screens in the store were 4k so why not?

Ofcourse amusingly I'm playing a Japanese VN on my new PS4pro+4k TV setup so it's all a bit wasteful.

It is a meme. But TV companies needed to sell more TVs so they started pushing 4k before there was any need for it. This generation should've locked down 1080p 60fps, better anti aliasing, ambient occlusion etc. instead of attempting higher resolutions

>50" 1080p
Why would you do that? I mean it probably looks alright from 3-4 meters away but I can see the little details on 4k screen at that distance.

NO YOU GOTTA BUY THAT SONY 4K CURVED SMART TV TO ENJOY YOUR PLAYSTATION 4 PRO IN HDR DUDE

>But TV companies needed to sell more TVs
this

>3-4 meters away
Sounds like a really reasonable viewing distance to me. Stop squinting.

Sounds about right.

>gamer who can afford nice hardware is disillusioned and plays games that don't even make use of it

>children playing the games with cutting edge technology that stretches the hardware limits on a fucking toaster

>implying 60 fps is not the memest meme

You watch movies in 20-27 fps why complain about games in 30 fps?

lol, the room with my 72" tv isnt even 2m wide

No you can't.

t. user with 30/20 vision

it's not that games are unplayable at lower frame rates. They just look so much better at higher. It's disappointing when devs don't take the effort to make their game look as good as possible.

>This generation should've locked down 1080p 60fps, better anti aliasing, ambient occlusion etc. instead of attempting higher resolutions
You need to see a game with shitload of small details at 4k. Zooming in at your 1080p monitor is not the same.

>more frame rate = better graphics

you what

Yes I can.

of course more frames makes it look better
i dont get your argument here

doesn´t help if the game is pure cancer

>i see a way more detailed soulless piece of shit.wohooo

Yea and if thats on a PS4 Pro I'd bet it's checkerboard and a solid 22fps

>What's with the big push towards consoles with 4k?
Money making.

Having said that, 4k+HDR is phenomenal period. even older games like Infamous Second Son are made to look tremendous.

probably true
but it is not worth the cost of the upgrade

>meme

That's not how you spell consumerism

and that's incredibly stupid. the majority of cinema is shot on digital cameras these days. It is pointless to stick with 24fps.

Higher fps movies look like making ofs or amateur youtube shit

>but it is not worth the cost of the upgrade
Not right now, but the argument can be made that you're future proofing. I spent £900 on my KS7000, but at the end of the day that TV is going to be the new industry standard for years to come. And the Pro only cost me £130 to upgrade to. For most people I'd agree, it's pointless. But welcome to the modern era, people will genuienly buy a new phone every year for a 5% improvement.

Except for people have watched film at a certain frame rate their entire lives and it's extremely jarring to watch film/tv at higher framerate, ie "soap opera effect"

that's only because movies have been shot in 24fps since like what...1920s? your perspective makes motion blur seem high quality while clarity seem like cheap made-for-TV movies and soap operas. As long as people have this ignorant mindset, movies will not change.

You really don't think there will be a new HDR, or Quantum Dot Technology™ in 2 years?

4k tv's are cheap and look great. i'm going to get one with the xbox soon. i already play my pc on a 32 inch 1080p tv.

1080p games look pixelated as fuck on a 4k tv.

unfortunately 4k on consoles isn't ready yet. like im not going to switch a game to 4k if it halves the framerate.

also true, but the phone is different
people also change car every three years when the "deal expires"

I don't get it. Even if films are shot at 4K, the effects and final render are probably gonna be done at 2K. Even if Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is gonna be shot at 8K, Disney aren't gonna do the effects at such a high resolution when they still need an ensemble cast for the Infinity Saga adaption.

We should be saying 2160p but for some reason its 4k.

It gets the point across that it's 4x 1080p

we've gotten dumber. If the 1080p standard just became the norm today we would call it 2k

2x1080 is 2160

yeah but its not

>Infinity Saga

Can somebody explain what Thanos is what he does and where he came from?

Wikipedia is your friend.
He destroys half a galaxy just to get his benis sucked by Death.

its a reaction to legitimize tv vendors push of otherwise useless product

3d fizzled out and the man on the street cant understand higher temporal or color resolution so hdtv 1.5 is what theyre running with

Higher res IRL footage helps to account for more accurate keying, higher retouch potential. The shot can be adjusted, zoomed in and stabilized without ending up as blurry on the final delivery.

oh god, please don't let these faggots plunge displays all down to audiophile-tier degeneracy

Film autists get angry if you use 2k to describe 1080p, but for some reason 4k is used to market 2160p, it's bizarre. And now 8k is being used to market 4320p. And the cherry on top is both 4k and 8k are UHD.

The human eye cannot detect pixels on a 72" 4k TV past 1.5m

You are full of shit

Any 4k monitor reccommendations?
Ideally I want a 32'' panel, 27 is just too small for 4k IMO. Also would prefer VA.

4k means approximately 4000 horizontal pixels, or 3840x2160. Your logic doesn't work since 8k is actually 16x as many pixels as 1080p.

Zooming in, I can understand but I would think a cinematographer would already have the framing of a shot in mind during the shooting of a scene.

4k isn't feasible for consoles as of right now, you're just going to get upscaled garbage

>that pic
What are those sacks?

it's not rocket science - human eye can make out 220-280dpi, so anything beyond that is the mind trickery

those are some kind of pebbles and i have no fucking clue, what are they supposed to according to beliefs of the poor sod who bought them

because 2k is 1440p you fucking retard

Actually anti aliasing is kind of made not as important if you play at 1440p or 4k+ the edges are smoothed out by going up that high. I agree with your other points though.

>I play 1440p

I have some 1080p maxed AA vs some 1440p AA turned low or off you you'd like to compare. It actually looks almost identical but having AA off can save 10-30 fps depending on the game.

There are already 4k native games on ps4 pro, just so you know.

It was 10 years ago since I owned a TV. I feel old.

>It is a meme
t. someone who never saw 4k irl

can you recommend any computer screen over 60"?

I wanna get rid of my TV since all I use it for is console games and watching series from my computer anyways. I 100% do not need a TV, but I wanna maximize my gaming quality on a big screen.

You could've at least bothered to wiki that.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2K_resolution

No.

NO, 1440p IS NOT 2K AND NEVER HAS BEEN. 2K means approximately 2000 horizontal pixels, 1440 has 2560 horizontal pixels. It's 2.5K if anything. marketers are lying when they call 1440p "2K," what's hilarious is 2K is actually a worse resolution.

I will take 144fps over 4k any day

I play at 1440p and you definitely still need AA

And they look like shit

>take 144fps
That you can rarely ever hit. But I guess if you only play shit games you actually can.

it is a meme

its not even real 4k, its just upscaled like 360 and ps3 games weren't even close to actual 1080p let alone 720

144fps will never be the standard for consoles since you need an insanely good CPU. Resolution is just the GPU, framerate is both, so in a lot of AAA games 4K is easier than >60fps.

>Moving the goalpost

HZD doesn't look like "shit" btw.

It's also not native 4k

Yes it is

HDR > 4k

I'll play in 720p if I have to, but yeah, most of the time it only works when my rig is new or the game is old

Meme from Meme Town.

Literally the Marvel Darkseid.

No it is not

oneangrygamer.net/2017/02/horizon-zero-dawn-runs-native-2160p-at-30fps-on-ps4-pro/24682/

Kys faggot

>utilize checkerboarding
Are you retarded?

>oneangrygamer.net/2017/02/horizon-zero-dawn-runs-native-2160p-at-30fps-on-ps4-pro/24682/
fake news. go watch digital foundry about hzd theyll tell you its checkerboarding and they have full time autists counting pixels for every game

Nah, I use a 22" screen for all my needs.

10 bit HDR 4K >>

Do you know what is checkerboarding?
Stop embarrassing yourselves. I knew Sup Forums was full of shitposter hating consoles for some reason but not making the difference between resolution and checkerboarding is another step.

yes but do you lol
checkerboarding is not native. if it was there wouldnt be a separate term called checkerboarding

do YOU know what checkerboarding is? it's literally upscaling but with AA blended into every other frame which is a copy of a previous frame. it's still 1440p and it still looks like a blurry mess.

t. someone who's brother bought a ps4 pro and witnessed how shit checkerboarding is in practise

Why are you guys acting like niggers pretending you know shit when you don't?
CHECKERBOARDING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RESOLUTION.
It is 2160p, you can have fun counting pixels on HZD SS if you like.

Its utter shit 4k is called 4k and not 2160, 2160 sounds cooler than 4k.

Checkerboard rendering
While exact implementations tend to vary between developers, the technique generally involves rendering only 50% of any given scene, often rendering it in a grid of 2×2 pixels. A reconstruction filter is then employed to extrapolate the appearance of the unrendered parts of the scene, with the final image then being presented to the viewer as (theoretically) the same as if it had been rendered natively at the target resolution.

can you go away now? you are too stupid to have opinions

>CHECKERBOARDING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RESOLUTION.

how fucking retarded are you?

>Checkerboard rendering, also known as checkerboarding for short, is a 3D computer graphics technique, intended primarily to assist graphics processing units with rendering images at high resolutions.
>rendering images at high resolutions.
>high resolutions.
>resolutions.

Checkerboarding is literally a different thing than native though. Like I get why checkerboarding exists, I'm not saying it's bad, but it's not "native."

before you say it has nothing to do with resolution

Checkerboard rendering, also known as checkerboarding for short, is a 3D computer graphics technique, intended primarily to assist graphics processing units with rendering images at high resolutions.

>assist graphics processing units with rendering images at high resolutions.

Yes? How does it affect the resolution stupid nigger????????
Where does it say that it upscales the resolution ??? READ NIGGER.

Checkerboarding is the new 480i.

1440p
144hz
1ms response
Gsync if youre nvidia
TN is fine but if you're Barron Trump get IPS

I would only buy a 4k monitor if youre not going to be gaming, in that case definitely get an IPS screen

Is this falseflag?

Idc about what you think of checkerboarding. The original post is : Console can't native 4k. The fact it, with checkerbording it can.

do they have ips 1ms 144hz 1440p gsync yet? mine is 4ms

holy fucking shit do you even know what upscaling is? how can you not relate that explanation to upscaling? fucking kill yourself or fuck off back to plebbit

...

>4k monitor recommendation
>hurr durr by a gaymur 1440p screen with a shitty TN panel
Come on now.

Do you count 2160p on HZD on ps4 pro ?
Yes or no ?
????

>tfw you'll never be so upset about something your simple mind can't possibly comprehend

I use a 27" 1080p for everything in my room because I'm a smelly NEET

>i-it's native! fucking nintenbros and pcbros!
>sony wouldn not lie to me!
>REEEEEEEEEEEE

>checkerboarding renders 50% of the pixels and fudges the rest
>"native 4k"
Holy shit this is the new interlacing.

I wish VA panels were a bit more popular. They now hit in the 2-4ms G2G range and have sick black levels. Closest thing to CRT true blacks, with the exception of OLED (but those panels are also Baron Trump tier).
