It's pretty good. Deadfire looking to be even better.

dogshit

Damn good when I played it at release. Haven't played the expansions yet.

I really enjoyed it. I had a Cipher trio with 1 frontliner. Frontliners take engagement then position on the rear of aggro, so enemies are sandwiched inbetween my team, then start channeling 3x pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Ectopsychic_Echo and blow things up as it ticks too rapidly for them to do anything about it. Ciphers are also solid tank support with pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Pain_Block. Focus generation/resource management is the superior playstyle to the very limited cast-per-rest of Druids, Priests, Paladin, Wizards, etc.

In b4 token rpgcodex reply bashing it and mentioning Underrail and Age of Decadence.

Best RPG since New Vegas. Nothing even comes close: D:OS is a shitty h&s game in comparison while Wasteland 2 combat is way too simplistic for the game to be good, even though W2 does have great roleplaying depth.

Durance's brothel dialog is 10/10

I know the story party characters are horribly built statwise but they have some good bantz

its shit

>In b4 token rpgcodex reply bashing it and mentioning Underrail and Age of Decadence.
Not even 'dexshitters play their own shit games, though Underrail isn't half bad, it just focuses too much on exploration and nto enough on roleplaying to be a good RPG.

It's a mediocre pile of shit that's getting more praise than it deserves because people really wanted it to be good. If you've played NWN2 and MotB, PoE is more or less a worse, uglier version of them. This "rpg renaissance" is a complete joke.

It's a good, but flawed game. Not that I'm saying that flaws should get a free pass, calling it shit is retarded considering that CRPGs are literally "good for what it is: the genre".

I managed to get to Defiance Bay before I dropped the game. I thought the story was bland and the characters (Eder and Durance were okay) were not that great. I also don't like rtwp combat so I lost all motivation to go on. I might give this game another go when the sequel is released.

Is there a mod that would make all stats DnD like?
I don't really feel comfortable with their system

Tried out the CRPG genre by starting with this one, since I played a little bit of BG 1 but couldn't get into it since it really didn't age well.
It's fine for now even I'm not very far, I liked what I've seen of the characters so far but the combats are a bit boring.

One of the most boring games I have ever played.

I wouldn't call it either good or flawed. It is just really mediocre and they played it really safe, and what they ended up with is grey muck.

It is just a really bland game with a really bland story. I think the writers banked so much on me being invested in the game and its' story from the get go because it had the Obsidian brand name on it that they forgot to actually put in a reason for my character to do things and to care about stuff because I unironically wanted to leave in-game and go to a better place because of what a shithole that whole area was and I could not think of any good reason for my character to not leave. Come to think of it, there wasn't any good reason for him to be there in the first place, just cause the story demanded it.

It is probably the weakest of the "pure" crpgs I've played in my entire life. It's not broken and it's not unplayable, but it is just very boring in every single aspect of the game and until I dropped it all I could see is how much more inferior it is to older crpgs that had shittier budget and most of the time were cut down or unfinished.

You realize Pillars was on sale when that picture was made?

This is probably one of the weakest games to get into the genre. I recommend you try Baldur's Gate 2 and the Neverwinter Nights series instead, even if the graphics are aged.

>You realize Pillars was on sale when that picture was made?
Doesn't change anything, it still has the most concurrent players out of all those games right at this very moment.

BG 2 seems like a pretty good game but would I be alright jumping into it without playing BG 1 first?

Barely.

Yes. It's a direct continuation of 1 but you don't need to play it to know what's going on.

Cool, I'll try it out then

This, 100%. I stopped playing roughly in the middle of the story and never looked back. Time after time I'd like to return and start a new run but then I watch a gameplay video on Youtube and it quickly crush my mood.

The game simply lacks the drive that would get me going. It's story(telling) is not strong enough, roleplaying options could have been deeper and more numerous, the in-game mechanics are not that interesting nor complex.

It's still a decent game and a real CRPG, but (as the other user perfectly put) simply blatant, unambitious and boring. It felt more like a homage to the classic Black Isle RPGs than the proper, modern revival of the genre.

>they forgot to actually put in a reason for my character to do things and to care about stuff
I agree with this. I felt like my PC didn't have enough motivation to do half the stuff he ends up doing. Most of the time it was just people telling me to go there and then there to talk to this guy and kill some stuff on the way.
