It had a contemporary storyline that was modern and fantasy at the same time without being like weird future fantasy. The main story is about terrorism, energy companies, ancient evils, and satellites. It's relatable and cool. Also the pacing for part one (midgar up to the motorcycle chase) is really good.

Condensed everything good about Japanese anime from 85-95 into a single game.

dat soundtrack though.

yeah that was good too. Over all a pretty good game. Even if you didnt like video games you could enjoy the music or the aesthetic.

didnt like it because of the change of the artstyle
still cant like any nomura shit. amano was all

Personally, I enjoyed the variety of things that you did during the main campaign. Few RPGs let you ride a dolphin and have a bitchslap fight on top of a giant cannon.

The games fun man.

>how come it hasn't been topped yet?

Because it was never at the top to begin with

a truly adult storyline
competent battle system that, while not innovative, is pretty to look at and never makes you go "ugh, this is stupid, who designed this"
excellent music by one of the best vg composers if not the best vg composer ever
excellent graphics for the time, plus FMVs
probably the most overlooked part of FFVII is the environments, which all have a unity of form to them - everything seems "real" enough
