Which one is the best for a first time Zelda player?
Which one is the best for a first time Zelda player?
Obviously Ocarina of Time
MM is the better game, but not a good introduction to the series.
They're both great, but if it's your first one then definitely OoT. Playing Majoras Mask doesn't really accurately portray the style the rest of the series have.
Majora's Mask is for people who hate Zelda, so play Ocarina of Time.
assuming you didn't grow up with them, neither one
they haven't aged well and anyone going into them in 2017 expecting a perfect gem like nostalgia fags claim will be sorely disappointed
they were good for their time but if you didn't get to appreciate them at the time you never will
OoT, anybody who tells you otherwise is retarded.
That's a load o bull btw
majora's mask has so much more to do but ocarinautists will say that one because it's more popular
>they were good for their time but if you didn't get to appreciate them at the time you never will
I can understand that. Still Majora's Mask seems like an interesting game with it's time mechanic. Would it be possible to just jump in?
As long as you understand it's very different from ever Zelda game and not representative of the series at all. You'd be retarded to play it first but it's not like anyone can stop you.
Agreed, never played them until the rerelease on 3DS. Maybe I was expecting too much.
>you still think majora's mask isn't as popular as ocarina
3D:
Ocarina has the best music
Skyward Sword has the best dungeons
Majora's has the best story and quests
Twilight is the best overall game
2D:
Link's Awakening has the best dungeons
Oracle of Seasons/Ages have the best quests
A Link Between Worlds has the smoothest gameplay
ALTTP is the best overall game
Skip Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Zelda 1 and 2, Wind Waker, and all spinoffs.
Neither. Play Link to the Past
>expecting a perfect gem
Just expect a decent video game. It's good. It's not 11/10 best video game or all time. If you go in expecting something ridiculous like that of course you'll be disappointed.
>Twilight is the best overall game
lol
>skip Zelda 1
Fag
>Skyward Sword has the best dungeons
>Twilight is the best overall game
Not even remotely.
>Skip Zelda 1 and 2, Wind Waker
Kill yourself.
OoT is the grand adventure, MM is the personal journey but MM is a direct sequel to OoT.
Which has the best dungeons?
Ocarina cause Majora is the sequel. If there was a choice defnitely Ocarina.
>Link's Awakening has the best dungeons
Man, now that I think about it LA really did have some stellar dungeon design. Eagle's Tower is one that sticks out to me. Definitely an opinion I don't hear much.
Well, you're half right.
Isn't there an OoT 3DS remake? Is it any good?
(with BotW I think its pretty cheap, or a least the one zelda game I saw at target was)
Ocarina of Time.
Yeah, I love LA. I think all Zeldas are worth playing in their own right, though I know Skyward is hated around here. It had excellent dungeons, but I prefer the field overworlds to the sea and sky.
>Skip Zelda 1
>Skip Wind Waker
HALO WARS
Yes to both.
MM is the kind of game you probably won't fully appreciate the first time you okay it. I know I didn't. But man, what a game.
Ocarina of Time is one of the best games ever made despite the rampant contagious autism on this board. It's the best place to start. I lent a copy of mine and an old 3DS to a friend who was a first-time player and he fucking loved it.
Explain this meme.
Skyward Sword had some fantastic ideas, but the execution sometimes wasn't the best. I wouldn't call it a bad game by any means though. Just not a very well done Zelda game in the grand scheme of things.
Lanayru Mining Facility is one of the best dungeons in the series though, and Koloktos is one of the best bosses in the series. If the game could maintain that quality throughout its run-time, it'd be amazing.
Alrighty. Hopefully I'll get it soon. Thanks user.
You're so wrong. I'm living proof of that.
...
OOT just because it's very representative of the classic zelda formula. MM is arguably better because it took what worked from OOT and refined it, but it goes off in it's own direction with a different atmosphere and a few very large game changing mechanics.
Probably OoT, or maybe MM even though it only has 4.
WW's are all too basic and easy, feels like it's entirely dungeons from only the first half of a Zelda game.
TP's are also very easy, and almost all follow a very similar formula of 'reach central hub, go right, return to hub, go left, return to hub, go forward', and are quite linear, even more than WW's. They do have some cool ideas and very memorable set-pieces going for them though, at least.
SS's are like TP's but even more easy and linear, less memorable as a whole (still has a few standout moments), and not even requiring you figure anything out thanks to Fi.
I'm replaying it now. I think a lot of people who had problems with the motion controls could benefit from altering their setup. I bought a cheap wireless sensor bar and put it on a little table close to my chair and it improved reliability tremendously.
>"TP's are also very easy, and almost all follow a very similar formula of 'reach central hub, go right, return to hub, go left, return to hub, go forward'"
Someone watched Boss Keys on Youtube :)
Even if Skyward Sword had normal button controls, I would still think it's the worst 3D Zelda.
OoT obviously
There's a lot of truth to this. Sup Forums is very contrarian and hipster. MM is a very good game, but nowhere near the level of OoT, which will go down as one of the best games ever made, regardless of fedora outrage. MM is literally the leftover stuff they couldn't fit into OoT. But long story short, play both.
oot just so you can appreciate how much better MM is
Wind Waker is the kind of game you randomly wake up one day after years of ignoring it craving, so you go on eBay and buy a copy and dog out your GameCube and wonder how the fuck you missed it to begin with. At least that's what I did in 2011.
No other game I've ever played nails that spirit of adventure like WW. Some games execute on it better, but none give you that feel.
Fi is definitely my biggest complaint with Skyward. She pops out every goddamn five minutes. Having the option to turn her off or make her only help at your request would've been great.
play OoT then MM immediately after
Playing majora prior to ocarina is foolish no matter how experienced you are with Zelda. The game's story begins literally right after Ocarina's ending
Majora's Mask is the sequel. Why the fuck would anyone suggest you play the sequel first?
>Wind Waker is the kind of game you randomly wake up one day after years of ignoring it craving
This is a great observation, user, and I think it can apply to a lot of games. The exact thing happens to me with Dark Souls 2.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Play the newest one you have access to.
If you're into /vr/, start with oot and then enjoy the series progression in mm.
I have, yes. Playing the dungeons always felt a bit repetitive and like going through the motions to me. Seeing all the dungeon maps and the paths you take through them laid out is more validating than anything else.
The best way to introduce anyone to the series is to tell them to play them in release order, and to skip Zelda 1 and 2 if they think they're too hard
If you have a 3DS I would honestly get LttP and then LBW
>and to skip Zelda 1 and 2
I never really noticed that repetitive structure although now that I think about it literally every dungeon had that central hub area followed by you moving in certain directions before looping back around.
I dunno, I always thought TP had the strongest set of dungeons in a 3D Zelda game after maybe OoT. Dungeons like Snowpeak and Arbiter's Grounds had such unique atmospheres that the repetitive structure kinda flew over my head.
>what is reading comprehension
it's near impossible to get into either of the first two games without a pdf of the instruction booklet or some other guide. if they can't be arsed to do that then it's perfectly valid to put them off until they aren't shit at vidya.
Wand of Gamelon is not even mentioned here? Probably the best pre-3D game in the entire series.
>it's perfectly valid to put them off until they aren't shit at vidya.
I didn't realize they were just getting into video games as a whole.
I never had any motion control issues and actually enjoyed that control scheme. I think this is the biggest gripe of people who dislike this game, along with the very linear structure and backtracking. I didn't mind either too much, although playing BotW now makes me realise that freeform exploration is always what I have wanted in a 3D Zelda game.
How do you fools continue criticizing the CDi games when you never played them?
>although playing BotW now makes me realise that freeform exploration is always what I have wanted in a 3D Zelda game.
I realized that when I played Zelda 1.
BotW is the only good Zelda because it's the only Zelda that doesn't play like the rest of the Zelda series
If you're introducing Zelda to anyone, even someone who's into games, it's still a pretty safe bet that Zelda 1 and 2 are above their skill level. Even though they aren't as tough as other classic games from that era, they're still a few steps up the difficulty hierarchy than most games from the last 15 or so years, and especially other Zelda games.
Zelda's adventure is the undisputed best top down Zelda game of all time.
>it's the only Zelda that doesn't play like the rest of the Zelda series
This also applies to the NES games, so no, you're wrong.
I replayed it and hated it. It was a lot worse than I remembered.
I don't know what it is. With Dark Souls II I actually felt peeved playing it at launch but then around a year after SotFS I just ended up buying it and playing through the whole thing and honestly loving it.
That was the most improved game I've ever seen. It runs so smooth and I had a friend to play through the whole thing with.
I want co-op fags to leave.
Did you play on Wii U? Because I can't stand that version. It's GCN or nothing for me. I don't quite understand why either, but I find the HD version repulsive.
Oot first, MM is the better one
You don't have to play with us, user. But if you want to you're welcome to it.
Ocarina of time 100% but it's not exactly the better game.
>he thinks 2D Zeldas count in any way
lol
>willingly going full pleb
HD but that's the version I prefer. Even with the improvements it was still tedious. I don't mind the changed lighting even if the original is better. But I didn't like the original back then either, although I remembered it a lot more fondly. It's always been a game that I wanted to go back to because I thought I just didn't appreciate it as a kid. Turns out I just hate it.
I think the real tipping point for me was when I wanted to do the Wind Temple before the Earth Temple and found out that I couldn't for the most inane nonsensical reasoning.
That's kind of what I was saying initially, that other games in the franchise really do execute on the promise of adventure better than Wind Waker does. I think the spirit of adventure is so present though. I don't particularly mind the linearity as a result. I actually like the progression. As soon as I finish the Temple of the Gods I like to map the whole ocean before continuing to where I need to go next. I love the colors in the original especially in the morning and that music is uplifting.
Can you imagine if they took Breath of the Wild but separated it over a large ocean like Wind Waker with the same sailing theme when you sail in the daytime? That would be the dream for me.
I'm watching this now. But liking the Water Temple makes me question his taste.
The two keys problem coupled with the fact that you can only cycle water one way was a massive pain in the ass.
It's nice that you can fuck up, but not when you have to keep doing the same shit to manipulate the central mechanism over and over.
>But liking the Water Temple makes me question his taste.
Didn't he only like aspects of it, like that you actually have to figure out where to go and what to do to some extent which is unusual for 3D Zelda?
Majoras
BotW, it's literally like Skyrim but better.
Best Zelda game by far
I don't think he has that great of taste. I don't find anything about his show particularly engaging. Especially after the last one with PH/ST. He lumped them to gether and hardly talked about them like he couldn't be bothered.
Spirit Tracks is a great game. Phantom Hourglass is okay. You could tell in the video he replayed only a few parts of each and mainly played PH.
I think I would enjoy Phantom Hourglass much more if they offered traditional movement, though I understand the original hardware had no analog control so it would've been difficult for precision, though I'm not sure that would have been necessary. Never tried Spirit Tracks.
I thought the DS games' movement controls were actually pretty smooth and natural.
OoA/OoS got similar treatment where everything was discussed in broad strokes, little about specific dungeons was mentioned, and like half the video was just talking about how he had updated his graphical representations of dungeon progression.
That said, I find his videos to be quite good, but I wish they went deeper on their subject matter. It's always just a touch facile.
Spirit Tracks improved on every major flaw that Phantom Hourglass had (no more completing the same floors over and over in the central dungeon, no time limit in the central dungeon, an actually good soundtrack, etc.)
Well, it's nice to see someone sequence this stuff. At least he's got some basis for his arguments unlike what we're doing here.
I don't get what he means by "red herring" though. I like having optional parts in Zelda dungeons, it's something that Majora's Mask did really well and that they should've kept.
Those are the only parts of the dungeons that can actually be made difficult.
>Those are the only parts of the dungeons that can actually be made difficult.
Well, no. They could try making a game that actually takes some amount effort to beat for once.
Yeah but they're not going to.
no ,St is worst zelda
Flute sucks dick.
>he thinks meaningless 20 second segments which are few and far between outweigh the garbage that PH slings around
MY BOI
Majora's Mask, you should save the best for last.
>it's the "everything old is bad no matter what" kid
You're treating them like they're fucking Gex games or something. I think you're full of shit. I played MGS and RE2 for the first time last year and I loved those games.
Link to the Past.
>Enjoying baby first Zelda
>Literally on rails
>You look like a retard when having to do the flute shit
>No dificulty
>Rehased dungeons, characters and items from PH
>Rehased Temple of ocean king but now with no difficulty
>No sense of aventure
>Boring companion system
>Shooting boring galleries
>Crappy uncharismatic villians
The game itself was garbage
Most definitely OoT, you should experience the quintessential hero's journey, to provide context for how MM subverted expectations, by being a much darker and stranger game.
*tips fedora*
almost everything you just said was a worse issue in PH
>Enjoying baby first Zelda
PH fits that
>Literally on rails
Yeah, your boat in PH is tied to slightly more loose rails
>You look like a retard when having to do the flute shit
that you do
>No difficulty
because PH was so hard right?
>Rehased dungeons, characters and items from PH
which zelda game past OoT doesn't rehash these?
>Rehased Temple of ocean king but now with no difficulty
are you really gonna try to argue that the TotOK was better than the ToS?
>No sense of adventure
none in PH either
>Boring companion system
ST Zelda is up there with Midna and Ezlo for best companion title, fuck are you on about?
>Shooting boring galleries
PH had those too
>Crappy uncharismatic villains
Shit at least Cole and Byrne existed, PH just had a big squid
they are literally the same game but with different temples, both of them are 10/10
my vote goes for oot just because it came out 1st and i got it for my 10th birthday(yes im older and much more mature than all you fucks)
>No dificulty
Wow, just like every single other Zelda post-NES!
Why are you asking stupid questions?
