There would be less of a backlash against Fed Force if it was a metroid game with multiple Samus. Things like MP3 and Fusion even allow for such a scenario to be possible.

The thing didn't fail because it was coop, it failed because no one wants a Metroid: Modern Warfare.

A co-op Fed trooper game could've worked fine if it was exploration based like the first Prime rather than mission based and didn't have chibi models.

Federation Force is offensive because Metroid is the only Nintendo series with a consistently mature and somewhat dark atmosphere and aesthetic, with lore that (mostly) takes itself seriously. Windwaker stirred up a lot of shit with its art style when it released, but since then we've come to terms with it and accepted that the Zelda series bouncing back and forth between art styles keeps things fresh and entertaining. Whereas Federation Force just torpedoes a serious sci-fi series that had no place experimenting with stupid Japanese chibi bullshit. That and the fact that we haven't had a good Metroid game in about ten years is just a slap in the face.

Had Nintendo actually invested in the success of the Metroid Prime series and marketed it intelligently, they could've lifted it to the popularity of Halo back in that series' hayday. But nope, sorry, we're offended that an American studio did Metroid better than we ever did. Your sequels will consist of stupid anime romantic drama and chibi.

To be fair, they avoided making another Four Swords with unique gameplay mechanics that hinge on having a team of three players. The totem mechanics add a lot of depth and mayhem which is pretty fun.

It had a good run, I'm personally okay with it dying now. A new Metroid game (that's good) isn't as monumental as say, a new F-Zero or something imo. Plus the fanbase is one of the most divisive and putrid cesspits out there right now so I guess in the end they get what they deserve.
