I nearly cried during ending E of Nier:Automata

I nearly cried during ending E of Nier:Automata.

I think this might be the most significant narrative work in video games to date.

You made this exact same thread yesterday mate.

Automatafags are to Taro games as Fallout 3fags are to Fallout.

why? Because something you liked is somewhat popular now?

You mean they only started like a franchise after it became playable?

Its not MGS2 but was definitely reaching

No doubt.

Zelda May be the best game this year now that RDR2 got pushed back, but NieR is the most important game to come out in a long time.

>bought game only because of 2B's ass
>though the game has strong themes, thinks the pasty story literally reinvented the wheel and the characters aren't some of the weakest he's written

Automata is clearly Sup Forums's first Taro game and non-Taro fans fell for the marketing ploy of 2B.

I agree 100%. I haven't played his previous games, but the way the narrative is played out, the themes and ideas it deals with is a significant paradigm shift. So much of this game is next level.

After this it feels like everyone else is writing basic bitch babby shit. I feel like I have been watching capeshit movies my whole life and just saw 2001: A Space Odyssey. There is so much more to this art form than the shit we get today.

The flaws of the game are more apparent if you're already familiar with Taro's work

I can see why its phenomenal to newcomers though

Yeah I fell for the booty and got one of the most moving narrative experiences of my life.

DoD and Nier 1 have shit gameplay and you know it. Automata is the first game in the series that is actually fun.

Why is it whenever people try to compare Automata to the other games in terms of story some idiot rushes to talk about gameplay as if that saves the story from its issues

Every single one of Taros games are ok tier hack and slashes so that shit dosent even matter

That's the only argument I ever see. This is the first Taro game that's not a slog to play. I've been a fan of his since DoD 2 and it's just the epitome of hipster bullshit to pretent Automata isn't the bets game he's done because it suddenly has a little more appeal. Fallout 3 fucking blows compared to the original Fallout games so your comparison doesn't work at all

>so DEEP
>such narrative

I mean.. I liked the game too but come off it.

His best story is either Nier or DoD1

Best gameplay obvs is Automata but the gameplay itself is just alright, the game balance and progression has its own issues

>some idiot rushes to talk about gameplay

Because they are video games.

>as if that saves the story from its issues

Story issues cannot make a game good or bad, because games are not books or movies.

>Every single one of Taros games are ok tier hack and slashes

No, every single one was objectively bad before Automata, which is okay tier or better.

Why is it weird that people bring up gameplay when talking about video games? It's an essential piece.

The story can be great but it won't be fun to play if the gameplay sucks.

Read closer. Why bring up gameplay when the context is story?

We can talk all day about how Automata has an intricate but ultimately nonessential depth to its combat or how DoD1 had a pretty good aerial combat system, but if the topic is story that shit is irrelevant

Because Automata has a different style to the stroytelling of its characters compared to NieR. NieR was a very human game full of human characters, while Automata was a game about inhuman characters finding humanity. NieR was certainly a very evocative and personal and relatable story, but Automata delivers those same emotional notes within the hidden side of the narrative. Some people may dig that, but others won't, but I personally enjoyed Automata's story and cast just a bit more.

So I just got to the part where some of the city caves in and I haven't gone near it since I heard there was a point where you can't do sidequests if you reach a certain point in the story. If I go down that hole and meet the aliens will I still be able to do sidequests?

Also Weiss pod best pod. All it needed was page flipping effects instead of it just opening to be perfection.

That part is quite a bit further, I think its at the end of the chapter after the forest.

But after getting ending C you get a chapter select so can go back and finish off all sidequests if you want.

if you missed 2B's crashed flight unit in route C please watch

youtube.com/watch?v=K2DylD45pq8

Automatas issues ti me isnt about the chsracters being relatable or not, its more about how theyre used and its in a way that makes me think so much time was wasted to get to the real point of the story

Ending E is pretty much a condensed version of everything the game was going for, but the main bulk of is sporadic as hell and only really shines in the sidequests

In comparison the first game just played it pretty straight and you get the point as soon as you finished A/B route, its not perfect either but isnt hideously inefficient either

Automata reminds me alot of what ge tried to do with Drakengard 3 with alotta shit being thrown together in the final stretch for some big effect - not really a fan.

I'm a newcomer and I thought it was terrible. Still have no idea what's captivating about this. Only reason I stuck with it was at the suggestion of other people who kept swearing up and down "It gets better". Everyone raving on about a story that's no better than a generic anime plot and combat which was just standard hack n' slash. Only praise I really have for it is the character design and music.

They learned their lesson from the first Nier. You'll never be permanently locked out of sidequests.

But if you want to do as much as you can before you're locked out for a while, just don't go to the flooded city if the main quest asks you to

>He didn't get past the first ending

The game is basically 4 parts, much of the first 2 parts is character building. Also I am tired of people who have autism not saying so when being critical of a game, you don't have the mental ability to understand it.

I agree with this.

I wish I could have the calm demeanor to just say "I'm not a fan" but after watching his interviews I'm convinced the guy is a hack. People get worked up over basic stuff all the time and it gets popular but there's just something unsettling about this having popularity within a niche. That's not me trying to say niches are predisposed to good taste, that's just me sayin

i can tell you're mad but I didn't think you'd be mad enough to make bad assumptions...

Its very possible to character build while moving things forward

Nier 1 did it perfectly, so thats not really an excuse for why Automatas A/B dont really go anywhere.

You couldve gotten the exact same effect if you just bounced between 2B and 9S like you do between 9S and A2 in CDE

Honestly thoufh Taro should just drop the whole "routes" thing since hes just telling a linear story anyway. DoD1 was the only game that actually did it right

You're making me want to play the 1st Nier to see if it's any better

Go for it. Its like what $20?

I dont think Taro is a hack, he just does his own thing and people hype him up because theye just not used to his style.

Once the novelty wears off its easy to see the whats and hows.

thank you. this is reasonable.

This is the most important narrative story-telling out there.

No but really though, I would've preferred if Ending E was actually hacking YoRHa and wiped the clear data of each ending you've obtained and use it as the "backup" that you receive, or be allowed to choose and risk the memory of 2B/9S/A2 to help.

Felt like a kinda flat version of Earthbound's ending since it had nothing to do with any of the characters.

>next time she awakens she will be near awakening 9S in complete safety and no longer being forced to backstab him

I'm glad neo-Sup Forums got to experience a Taro game but man, original NieR had such a more exciting story all around.

If you liked this one, try to play the previous one even if its gameplay ain't the best.

Ending E was the pods hacking their own programming to override their command to erase all traces of the current generation of YoRHa which allowed them to preserve 2B and 9S.

I got tears in my eyes when the messages of other players started appearing, then I cried a bit more when they came to rescue me and I cried like a baby when the game asked if I wanted to help other players even if it cost my save data.

I hope you fuckers deleted it (no uploading save to cloud bullshit) to help others and put a nice message in the end.

>mfw I deleted it without hesitation
I don't know why, it just felt like the right thing to do.

I fucking mashed my confirmation button when 042 asked me to help the others.
And i don't regret because i will play this game again.
And maybe again.

>tfw just got ending A
Been busy with work.

It really did. I deleted mine without hesitation as well, even though there was still some stuff I wanted to do in the game (still had one pod to find and one sidequest to complete). In the end, it didn't matter. I deleted my save data, put a nice message there to help others and moved on.

Beautiful, considering the whole point of the game is existance and the meaning of it.

Away from this thread NOW.

>I dont think Taro is a hack, he just does his own thing and people hype him up because theye just not used to his style.
This.
Ive played all his games and i cant say he's good, people just arent used to crazy story/characters so theyre putting him on a pedestal when his execution of concepts have much to be desired.

>His best story is either Nier

You're so stupid it hurts

I didn't at first because I wanted to see Emil's ending, but the regret set in quickly and I immediately went and did the segment again just to delete my save.

tfw you realise why 2B was crying at the end of A

I can be stupid and still tell the truth.

I was pretty obvious that she has feelings for 9S even during the route A already.

Thats not why she's crying.

That's one of the main reasons.

>it always ends like this

I didn't really understand that. So A2 says 2B was actually a Type E unit (the assassination units) and she didn't want 9S to be killed over and over again. Does that imply that 9S died more times than the two we see in the game (black box reaction at the beginning and the death after Eve's battle), all by the hands of 2B? If so, was he killed over and over because he was uncovering the truth everytime and 2B would kill him in some way to erase his memory of the truth?

The reveal loses weight since it so easily can be confused for something else and still remain consistent.

If he really wanted us to be like whoa it should have been much more pronounced. The Etype mission and A2s backstory shouldve been in the main quest.

>hide all the interesting bits of your character in sublayers
>leave the main story as a haphazard slog

All one can ask is why

I didn't cry for anything in the main game, but...

We tried our best!
In the rain, in the wind, in the storm.
Even when our companions died, we kept fighting.
But the eternal war. Our eternal pain. The eternal pain!
It screamed at us!
It told us there was nothing of value to protect in this world.
The world had no meaning. It screamed at us!
You. All of you. This pain! This sadness! This desperation!
You know nothing about it!

But even so! All of this is wrong!
No matter how hard, or how painful...
They never gave up.
They kept fighting because they believed they could overcome someday!
Isn't that right, Kaine!?
Even if it's pointless, you still have to do it!
Because this is the world my friend tried to save!

Yes.

In fact she says 'It always ends like this' sort of gives it away.

Yes. It's not known how many times 2B has killed 9S, but it's enough to make her not want to ever do it again.

2B is also slightly on the yandere side, as evidenced by weapon stories.

9S and 2B were created 3 years prior to the events of the game. She was assigned to act as his failsafe because without proper control he ends up learning everything about project YoRHa's true nature. They were directly monitored by Commander who issued execution orders for 2B to backstab and reset him. So 9S died a shitload of times given how fast he learns things.

Though i think that he ended up sacrificing his life for her on more than one occasion because he's most likely based on A4's personality while 2B is based on A2 and A2/4 were lovers and A4 constantly helped and cheered up A2 even if ultimately meant dying.

Except Fallout 1+2+BoSteel was completely different in gameplay compared to 3 onwards.
Nier and Nier Automata have similar gameplay being that they're both action RPGs.

Yes. She's likely had to kill him dozens of times over the years. 9S is extremely valuable for his intelligence and insight, but that same insight always inevitably brings him too close to the truth, necessitating a reset.

Remember that one quest with the couple, where it turns out the woman was periodically reformatting her partner over and over again while she remained the same? Like most sidequests, its story was meant to parallel the main one.

What the fuck, i bought the game because i believed that the end would make me feel abysmally emotional

everyone is fucking crying and i barely felt a thing

>the guy is a hack
Taro doesn't hype himself up at all.

He doesn't say anything positive about his own works (him praising Automata is primarily praising Platinum) and he prefers to be outside of the spotlight as much as possible.

He ends up as director as is forced to do interviews, more than likely by his publisher because that's what the fans want to see.

Now Kojima? He is most definitely a hack. His performances at the past VGAs confirm this.

youtube.com/watch?v=sbBGWRqt7uM

Kojima put his work in, he can do whatever the fuck he wants.

He was already doing shit people worship Taro for back in 2001

>people just arent used to crazy story/characters so theyre putting him on a pedestal when his execution of concepts have much to be desired.
I think a large part of this is video games still being a relatively new medium. I'm hoping someone like Taro becoming popular will open the door for other developers who maybe wanted to make a story as unhinged as his can get but never did because it would never be approved for production.

Yeah, that's a cool context and all, but it's represented poorly in the game. It was a credits shooting minigame where the only emotion comes from PSN users deleting a save for a game they have thoroughly completed and will likely never play again and have a backup save through PS+'s cloud saving, with a single template message that can range from something as generic as "Don't give up! Believe in yourself" to as stupid as "I like 2B! PlatinumGames is shitty"

And all I get out of it is shooting the names of real-life Square-Enix employees. That's not a replacement for an actual enemy or confrontation, and did nothing to do with the game or characters I spent 40+ hours with that this is supposed to be the climax for.

Because the story isnt all that well done

It has nice themes and all but trips over itself getting to the point. So if it dosent resonate all that well I dont blame you

>Personal data deletion request denied

fuuuuuuck

Really should've guessed that there's something going on between 2B and 9S when she was calm after the death of her entire squad but started to panic when 9S merely got hurt protecting her.

...

>Tarofags think the game is bad because is popular
>Platinumfags think the game is bad because the combat isn't MGR-tiers of *unzips katana*
>normiefags think the game bad because the story isn't generic Western "an ancient evil awakens" dribble

Undertale did it better

mentalhealthtalk.info/bipolar_hsp

Get help before it's too late.

Tarofags dont care if the game is popular, the big issue is that the story is lacking compared to his better works. (Plus Nier got enough exposure in its time)

Newfags are mystified because its their first exposure to his same old tricks, so naturally people are going to talk about it

Also that one where that android hunting down her friend's killer only to end up being an executioner that killed all her friends and kept erasing her memory

Taro fags are more annoying than Kojima fags.
Philosophy 101 the game is not some breathtaking achievement in writing

>the story is lacking compared to his better works.

I wholeheartedly agree, I mean who could ever forget such epic literately achievements in grand titles such as.......................... umm........ .....Drakengaard 3 --- a game adapted by a fanfic written by an edgy 12 year old.... or the oscar worthy peformance of the YoRHa stage play........................................................

Did the ending to this game remind anyone else of Texhnolyze? Like how this proxy war ends up just being fabricated as a way to give the surviving people of earth a reason to keep living

But she acted genuinely surprised when the YorHA units got mind controlled and started killing everyone. Was 2B faking it all along or she didn't know how things would transpire, she only knew she would end up killing 9S at one point or another?

If you are even slightly familiar with Japanese media and themes the ending won't do much for you

Drakengard 3 is shit, I agree.

The cut off point is Nier 1

Basically Taro sucks at sequels

Taro is realizing the full potential of the medium, by hitting you hard sometimes with game mechanics (like deleting save data) as well as graphics, music and storytelling. He isn't the only one doing it, of course, and his stories aren't perfect, but he's actually trying, which is more than we can say about other developers.

>or she didn't know how things would transpire
Of course she didn't. Not even Commander knew. It's SS-level info.

They'll just mimic him in the lowest way possible.
This is video games.

>Taro realizing

Welcome to years ago?

Suda is a much much better developer and story teller when it comes to utilizing the medium though.

Taro just tells the same sad story over and over again with some very surface level philosophy jumbled in randomly

Sup Forums is more annoying than anyone else on the internet.
You'll shit on anything or go out of your way to love something shit.

Even that one Bamham game played with graphical glitches and Kojima is steeped in the meta shit.

I respect Taro for what hes trying to do but I think its a mistake to treat him like some gaming savior. Besides that all the meta tricks will only get you so far, even Kojima started to use them sparingly.

How rough is Drakengard 3? In terms of both difficulty and making through all of it.

I 100%ed the original one but had a bit too much going on when the third one came out so I never got it.

The problem with Taro is that he needs a good producer that keeps him in check. Many auteurs in the industry suffers from the same problem, (Tarantino, David Cage, Kojima). They have good ideas, but they have to rely on someone else to supervise the script and come with constructive suggestions or else they fall into the same pit as George Lucas who after the success of Star Wars got surrounded by a bunch of yes men and full creative control.

Its grind is casual compared to DoD1, just a matter of grinding for money

You have no heart if all you got out of Ending E was that. Sure, you can boil it down to pressing buttons in a shooting mini-game, but it was much more than that, considering the whole game is about the meaning of life / existance, the pointlessness of the universe, the battles, the things we do without thinking etc. Deleting your save data is basically saying "I don't need the in-game items, weapons, trophies etc to tell me what I experienced, it lives on with me, not inside the game, as long as I live. My experience is real, no matter who I am, as long as I exist. This matters to me".

That's my takeaway at least. I could use the cloud save to trick the game and get my save back, I could diminish the power of the messages from real people all over the world by saying they're pre-made messages, but what's the point?

>game starts in windowed mode
>switch it to fullscreen
>alt tab out to shitpost on Sup Forums
>alt tab back in
>it's back in windowed mode
>have to go back to settings and set it to fullscreen mode
>literally haven't even made it to the first boss and save point because game keeps crashing to a white screen forcing me to restart again and again
>have to rollback drivers to prevent this faggotry

Not sure if I should blame AMD or Nier for this but fucking hell.

It's easy enough and straight forward enough. You rarely have to do anything more than once. It's just awkward and runs at like 10fps

You can still get the point of the game without needlessly deleting your save without having 100% the game

I know I did

It really doesn't matter when one gets to know someone's work. Taro made a game with Platinum precisely because he wanted to reach a wider audience with his works, since they usually had terrible gameplay.

Don't mind that guy user, Taro said in an interview the only reason that is in the game is because he disliked that people watching Let's Play got basically everything the game had to offer, so to counter attack that he implemented a mechanic only the player truly experiences.

>Taro made a game with Platinum precisely because he wanted to reach a wider audience

It wasn't ever up to Taro to do this.

There's value to surface level philosophy. It gets people interested in the various subjects talked about and makes some of them ask for more and dive deeper. Not everything has to be SSS tier philosophy to be worthy of praise.

Yoko Taro is probably learning more and more about philosophy as he develops these games.

Thats what it sounded like, he read a bunch and the game itself is an embodiment of his own personal musings.
