So what's the general consensus on this game? From what I gather:
>Solid base gameplay held back by bad objectives and level design
>Good world design
>Great soundtrack
>Terrible story and dialogue if you aren't into that kind of thing
>Fun multiplayer, but could use a race mode like SA2B
Does that sound about right?
So what's the general consensus on this game? From what I gather:
>>Solid base gameplay held back by bad objectives and level design
They refined the gameplay from Heroes, but it was still slippery shit that can't hold a candle to...literally any other 3D Sonic title, even the controls in 2006. Most mechanics play well enough, but many of them (like fire arms that don't lock on and every single vehicle that isn't either the hover disc or GUN walker) are so useless and awful that it's better to avoid them and just play Shadow normally.
All of the level designs are actually quite great except for Westolopis and The Doom, due to their rigid, boxy designs and extensive exploration made terrible with spaces the camera can't fit in.
>>Good world design
They literally just recycled Sonic Adventure 2's entire setting.
>>Great soundtrack
As always.
>>Terrible story and dialogue if you aren't into that kind of thing
The dialogue and story are both terrible regardless of your tastes.
>>Fun multiplayer
The multiplayer mode literally has the deepest lore in video game multiplayer mode history, but it plays like fucking shit and two of the Shadow Androids are OP to the point where you just pick them and shoot once.
The multiplayer was kinda fun.
>>Good world design
???
>>Terrible story and dialogue if you aren't into that kind of thing
Terrible story, comedically bad dialogue
>>Great soundtrack
>>Fun multiplayer, but could use a race mode like SA2B
Wrong
>>Solid base gameplay held back by bad objectives and level design
This is right, though
I think they should've focused more on one gameplay style instead of trying to force a TPS and a platformer in one.
The story could've been good if they referenced the angel island murals confirming the fan canon, toned down the edge of shadow to his SA 2 form, still make Gerald Robotnik a bad person that so happened to do something good, make Black Doom and the black arms more threatening and allowed you to go to the other branches by replaying a mission in the mission select and not make another campaign save.
It's as bad as people meme Adventure 2 as being.
It's not a pure pile of trash but it's an actually bad game, unlike the decent to good games Sup Forums calls bad all the time.
>still make Gerald Robotnik a bad person
Gerald Robotnik's story is a tragedy, he's a victim of circumstance.
Gerald Robotnik is arguably the most generous human being who ever existed. Even before they made up the reason why the Eclipse Canon existed, the whole purpose of Gerald's research was to help his granddaughter and all of humanity.
And then the military shut it all down, killed his granddaughter and colleagues, "took everything away from him".
I forgot about that.
One thing I don't get/like is why GUN killed everyone on the ARC. It's stupid.
No witnesses, kill all people involved in a project. That kind of stuff seems to be common in fiction. Nobody except the government should know about project shadow and the african american aliens, but dont ask me why that guy with two different colored eyes ended up living and becoming the leader of GUN
Shadow The Hedgehog's game effectively claimed it was due to the alien threat, but that didn't exist when they made SA2.
I suppose it was always meant to be left as a mystery.
>but dont ask me why that guy with two different colored eyes ended up living and becoming the leader of GUN
He saw Gerald and Black Doom creating Shadow, ran and told the authorities. He probably got rescued. In one scene he claims he joined GUN, blaming the GUN attack on Gerald and the scary alien he saw as a kid.
The entire colony wasn't assassinated. Only people in Gerald's labs. Everyone else was evacuated back to Earth.
music is good and has a shadow feel to it. some stages were legitimately good. also had cool weapons like the billy hatcher gun. i still like to play it every blue moon.
Some of the weapons were great.
The GUN mecha machine gun and the chicken gun were my shit.
I am still in the camp saying they should've refined the gunplay more and give it a larger focus.
And on that note. WHY DOES IVO/EGGMAN NEVER TALK ABOUT THIS IN THE LATER GAMES?!
This is actually a very damn interesting turn of events. What if his start of darkness began with him trying to search for his granddad's work, only to find out the government was directly responsible for the deaths of not just his own family (and the only family members directly shown in canon, natch), but also his great role model? Kind of something that would make for good material, right?
why does shadow need a motorcycle?
it's easier to control than shadow
It's also slow as shit.
If given the chance, would you fix this game?
Hard mode: Have to keep Black Doom and Black arms in their current form.
He really likes that bike
The level plays significantly better if you never use the motorcycle at all.
man I dont think I was ever so hyped for a game, I was a sonic autist back then and having an edgy sonic game seemed like the coolest shit. It wasnt great but it had some GOAT moments. I loved that mission where you have to kill the president on the aircraft carrier
>I think they should've focused more on one gameplay style
Literally the problem Sonic has had for over twenty fucking years, bro. Sonic Team still hasn't learned either since Forces apparently has three play-styles.
>fix this game?
This is the game that did so poorly in every way that it made sonic team reboot the franchise into another disaster. Even without the concept being something nobody asked for, even without the random addition of guns, even without all the retarded cursing, this game is a mess. It's control is worse than heroes, every level is a fucking ice level. The number one thing behind a Sonic game, or any platformer for that matter, is the control. Shadow the Hedgehog is a game that can't be fixed without reworking the concept of what is a Shadow game.
i was hyped as fuck. i didnt keep up with games on the internet back then. i was just laying in bed at night when i saw the commercial for the first time and then autism happened.
one of my weird friends bought it for some reason, he was more of a mario guy, and didnt really care about sonic. i was at his house playing it, while i was sitting there uncomfortably with his gothic sister and boyfriend just making comments about it and i never spoke to them
As much as people hate it sometimes, boost era was good because it was gameplay style for a while
Unleashed had the same problem of being padded the fuck out with the Werehog, which takes way longer than it should compared to the much shorter daytime stages, and the medal bullshit.
Colors I enjoyed and it definitely trimmed the fat and focused on just Sonic. Yeah, it's not anything like Genesis Sonic, but I think it's fine as its own platformer.
Generations was good and the alternative play-style was at least more platforming. Kind of rushed at the end though.
Hell, I even thought Lost World wasn't that bad. It has potential. Sonic actually felt like a 3D platformer.
