Alright, just got past five pebbles and found one of "them." Where the hell are the rest?
Why is this game so brutality difficult? Why is it so satisfying to progress?

>get to Shoreline
>can't see slugcat underwater
>keep drowning
>devs say they know it's an issue and will be fixed next patch
Welp, looks like I'm setting this aside until that patch. Had enough of guesswork going through the Shaded Citadel in the dark, can't be bothered with guessing where slugcat is under the water.
I just wanted to say, while mindbogglingly difficult, there is a sense of joy when you actually manage to get anywhere. The game is incredibly immersive and so difficult that I think of how to progress before I go to sleep. What the fuck is this game doing to me.
You're suppose to steal some fire from the humanoid guys and or use the glowing slugs like I did. The wall jumping is very difficult though. You are going the "right way."
>15.03€ on steam account
>game is 15.99€
I swear this always keeps happening
though I think I'll return snake pass and try this instead
Anyone got a mega link? No demo indie games are a massive red flag.
There were enough lantern mice on the route I found to make it through. But yeah, there probably is a better way to go about it, I definitely need to go back into the Citadel when I've got enlightened.
Pic related, it's my route through the Citadel. And yes, stitching this together is a bit of a sad thing to do, but it makes me nostalgic for maps in vidya magazines, so I like it.
I can't even get past the drainage system, fucking slug has like no lungs. The leeches are annoying too, and the exploding snail things don't help much. Should I be going a different way or something?
You should upload that to the wiki, that shit is dead as fuck.
Don't spam "A" or the swim/jump button, it makes the air run out faster.
If you're on shoreline, you're on one of the right paths.
There's a wiki?
There's one in the sky islands, I think. I'd at any point you entered a room and the entire screen went blue for a few seconds there was one there. If they don't show up you might need to sleep nearby and come back.
First patch is going to give him more lung capacity. Heard drainage is completely miserable right now so I avoided it.
fuck, finally got through the drains. Thank god the door at the end didn't need me to be a higher level or I would have flipped my shit.
this was very helpful, thanks
>live in a world where rain is a serious hazard and there's water everywhere
>can swim well but cant hold its breath worth a shit
What did Slugcat mean by this
Just stole a spear from a merchant, was that a mistake and will he be hostile forever now?
You might be on their shit list right now, but if you act extremely respectful around them (drop your weapons and literally crawl on the ground) and buy their favor with pearls you'll be alright. It's worth getting on their good side early if you can.
Whats your favorite part about this game Sup Forums
The neat little mechanics, like using spears to open those red pods, using them to climb, and putting those little blue things in water to make them into food.
It's fun discovering the new things you can do.
Where the hell is the shelter in the Underhang? I keep getting rained on, and there's a gate leading up that requires high karma. No way I can get past that
>finally manage to get into a new area
>cant find shelter in time and get rained
Is there a worst feeling
In the tall vertical shaft, it's the bottom right hallway. Food around there respawns really quickly and there's a ton of it so it's actually pretty painless building your karma up.
so i just started and found some people with spears.
i was reading somewhere that you can befriend them. how do you do that?
You get past all the platforming and enemies and go up into the structure. When you find the orange food and mushrooms, that's inside the structure. You'll find a big shaft going downward with a few blocks with red letters on poles and you drop down the shaft hugging the right side of the wall. I think its the second branch off the big shaft that has the chamber.
What's the deal with those popcorn plants anyway? My little orange dude pointed it out like it was food but I couldn't see any way to interact with it.
throw a spear at it and you get popcorn
>game is 2d
>world map is 3d
Who thought this would be a good idea?
Also, where can I find a red lizard? It's all I need left for the dragon slayer achievement. Will lizards be afraid of me if I get that achievement?
You have to touch them and press the grab button, its not very intuitive but it can regenerate all your food meter
Give them pearls, they love them. They pay a lot of attention to how you behave around them. Treat them with a healthy amount of respect, don't threaten them with weapons, don't steal from them, get down on all fours and crawl if they seem nervous. Pay attention to their eyes, they narrow if they're getting upset at you.
where do i get pearls? are those found later in the game?
Give them pearls. You can put objects down gently by crouching and pressing the pickup/eat button, so they scavengers don't get freaked out by you lobbing stuff at them.
But don't give them coloured pearls, they're for something else.
Thanks. I always try jumping up at them so maybe that's why I haven't had any luck.
>Why is this game so brutality difficult? Why is it so satisfying to progress?
>devs are this desperate for 4chins approval
>But don't give them coloured pearls, they're for something else
Wait, seriously? God damn it
You can steal them back. But don't worry about doing that until you actually need to, quite a bit later in the game.
You can actually get them back from the scavengers? Where do they take them?
You can find them rarely in the outskirts and industrial, and there's a designated tutorial one in garbage that the yellow guide will point out to you. If you do find one early it's a good idea to store it in your stomach (hold the eat button while it's in your hand, do the same to regurgitate it) until you find a scavenger to give it to. If you can get on their good side early you definitely won't regret it.
They'll have a christmas tree somewhere.
It's ok to throw pearls, slugcat just lobs then lightly instead of overhand hurling it as hard as he can. Scavs will even catch them, just don't throw a spear at them instead. It's a really good idea to just drop any weapons you're carrying around them, makes them less nervous too.
Is there any surefire way to get the wandering scavengers to never throw spears at me?
I'd rather not piss off one of the few things not actively hunting me but passing by a small group of them not at their outposts always makes me nervous.
I've heard some bad things about this game. Is it true that you can enter a new area only to immediately die because you're on top of an enemy? If progression is as arduous as I've heard it is, that would be incredibly frustrating. In general, how much actual bullshit can be mitigated with raw skill?
For the achievements, do you generally need to do a thing 5 times in a row (sleep at max karma, not kill anything, only eat meat/veg, etc.) or just 5 times in total?
Once you get used to things avoiding death is 90% on you not fucking up.
But yes unfortunately you can sometimes get fucked over by enemy placement outside a sanctuary. Haven't had that happen very often though.
Just got to the Sky Islands. Chimney Canopy was absolute hell for me because I didn't realize you could get through it completely fine without using the silkworm guys, so I'd constantly be getting eaten.
I've only walked into a room ontop of a monster once so far. And I could have survived, but I'd never seen it before so didn't know it was dangerous and tried to push past it.
As your reputation with them improves they'll be much less likely to attack you, they might even roll around with you as a pack, but they're always still a little unpredictable. Even at chieftain I still go out of my way to be respectful because you never know how they'll react. It's just the way it is, they'll always be your superiors in everything but brain power.
>how much actual bullshit can be mitigated with raw skill?
You can be small furry blobby god of war and still get fucked by the rest of the nature because you're basically one step above the total bottom of the food chain and almost everything can and will try to get slugcat-burger.
You WILL die, not always because of a fault of your own.
Deal with it or find another game.
this place is pretty freaky
Each is different and their progress meters reflect that. The one for befriending scavengers is a smooth bar that can change (+ or -) in varying increments, while the one for exploring all the different zones just has like 15 pips and they never go away once earned.
Once you understand how everything works and have some sort of handle on the controls you can avoid 90% of deaths. Sometimes you will be fucked by awful enemy placement due to RNG and you just won't be able to survive without luck. Also you pretty much never understand how EVERYTHING works given this game tells you absolutely fuck all.
How far am I from these cool sounding places? Just got to outskirts
I've been playing this game for days now and I'm still not sure if I've made any actual progress yet. Visited like Outskirts, Industrial Complex, Shaded Citadel, Garbage Wastes, Shoreline, Chimney Canopy and gotten only a little bit into Sky Islands and Drainage System.
is it worth snagging whilst its on launch sale or is this a deeper discount dealio
I got to Chimney Canopy from the Industrial Complex, which is connected to Outskirts. So it's probably pretty easy to get to but it was actually like the 6th area I visited. This game is huge and it's extremely easy to get lost so I don't know how long it will take you to get there.
Question
Did they fix the controls or not yet? I bought it on day one but it felt unresponsive and kinda delayed
Spoilers obviously, but somebody did a map of the area connections in the game:
docs.google.com
Am I right in thinking that:
>??? to east of Shoreline is the place you meet Moon
>??? above Exterior is Five Pebbles and Sun
>??? below Subterranean is I dunno
Don't think so, are you playing with a controller? If so use a dpad instead of a stick because this game just isn't made for analog input, despite it being an option.
>re you playing with a controller?
I was using a controller yes
Shit, I went from industrial complex to outskirts. I hope I'm not going in a circle. At least I'm completing my map as I go along.
Outskirts is literally the area you start the game in, yes you did go around in a circle.
I thought so... but when I checked the map it seemed empty, so I thought it was new. Oh well
map completion is only saved if you don't die before finding a place to hibernate, so that might explain why it was empty on the map.
??? below Subterranean is The Depths. The last area in the game.
IGN told me that this game gets boring because you die a lot and have to redo the same areas over and over and over again. Were they right?
Yes. It definitely sounds like IGN being casual babies to a passerby but yes it's true unless you're a god at it from the minute you pick it up, which you 100% won't be.
see I'm tempted to pick it up before the launch sale ends but if it's just going to be frustrating I'll probably wait for a bigger sale
It's definitely frustrating as hell, but super satisfying once you actually manage to get where you've been trying.
satisfying enough to be worth all the prior frustration? fuck it I might just go for it
>red lizard
I believe some spawn in Drainage. Or Sky Islands. Can't properly recall.
>satisfying enough to be worth all the prior frustration?
I'm going to say no but that might just be because I'm really bad at it. Just pirate it if you really want to play it that badly.
I know I've seen at least one red lizard in Chimney Canopy.
Rolling is such a frustratingly pointless mechanic. It feels totally random and it fucks you over so hard when all you want to do is get in a hole.
Stop using analog sticks.
When crouching, press back and down and you'll roll
Anyone have any idea what the whole 'holding shift' thing does? It just seems to create something at random, and doesn't work all the time.
I wanted it to be good
I got bored in half an hour and haven't touched it since. They made some really bad decisions regarding the core gameplay.
You can swallow an inedible item in your stomach, that stays there forever until you throw it back up again. You can only store one thing that way at any time though. I've been holding a glowing orange stone inside me for ages in case I ever need to go back to the Shaded Citadel again.
Can I take befriended lizards all the way to the end of the game?
So long as you only go across areas they can pass.
> They made some really bad decisions regarding the core gameplay.
Such as?
>Half an hour
>bored
That's ADD, friend.
I do agree, the Karma system is fucking annoying more than anything and if I could have unlimited Karma from the start, I would.
But even so, Golden Flowers are plentiful enough to mitigate it.
>mfw this 360 noscope spearshot
twitter.com
One definitely spawns in drainage, you'll find it a few rooms past the Outskirts - Drainage gate if you go up.
Damson.
So I've heard you can make friendsies with the disco lizards. What kind of food do they eat?
The basic gameplay loop
>find shelter
>eat enough to level up
>save/level up
>go through rooms try to find the next shelter before it rains and you die or get
>find next shelter
>repeat
This core gameplay loop is just plain boring. I don't think it makes the game too hard, just extremely tedious. You lose way too much time when you die. The golden flowers do help a bit.
The procedural animation is cool but it can often lead to enemies getting stuck and blocking your path, forcing you to wait for them to get out, or spawning on you when you enter a room, leading to your death.
I don't necessarily think it's a bad game I just can't see myself liking the core mechanics enough to keep my interest. It's a damn shame. I might give it another try someday.
...
>these willow things in shaded citadel
i understand they can't see me, but i cannot sneak by the fuckers; can't really rely on throwing shit at them, either, there are just too many of them and not enough shit to throw. what's the play here?
That was actually pretty impressive.
I always just fling a stone into lizard's skull firts and that makes them to thrash a bit revealing their soft parts.
Fair enough.
Thank you.I would have loved this information in game so much. If it has an exact input I can avoid or even use it.
>Why is this game so brutality difficult? Why is it so satisfying to progress?
You answered your own question OP.
Slugcats mostly.
Neat.
Guess I should get around to recording some plays, if only I had good video editing software
Oh I see. Thanks. That's pretty useful
>in farm array
>trying to pass over the little floor fucks that succ you up
>the big rabbit thing has fucked off and hasn't came back to let me ride it
WAT DO
You will die! Or else you will die!
i was reading that a region has a limited amount of food and it wont respawn. is this true? can you actually fuck your playthrough up by dying a lot in later regions?
You can feed them scavengers or those weird big flies, i don't know if you can feed them other lizards though
There's something you can ride there? You mean the giant lanky things? I tried to jump on its head but fell off, so I got mad and threw a spear at its face and it abandonned me. Fuck those floor succers. If you lure a bird or something onto them can you walk past them safely maybe?
No, that's a lie.
Get those white pod things you can find underground, preferably two of them.
Toss one to attract them and use the other to feed them, you can hop and grab onto an antler while they're feeding.
They're really fucking weird with their body movements though so chances are you'll get stuck in something or flung into the sky.
