Why is this a taboo subject here?

why cant we discuss it here?

>The first 5 minutes of this alone destroy completely Re4,5,6,7 and silent hill 2

>is the magnum opus of the Re4 creator

I suspect the game flew under the radar coz it didnt have the Res Evil brand name

dumb widescreen

vague plot dlc required

hard but puzzlelike gameplay (punishing "wrong"upgrades, ammo scarcity, must rely on some cutscenes) kill the horror

average action game and average horror

the bullet scarcity is pretty much overkill
other than that, it is a RE4

I bailed out of the main campaign, but the stealth DLC was pretty enjoyable IMO

still planning on trying to finish it... my current save is out of ammo

The games awesome, it is the best resident evil since 4 and I really hope there is a sequel or new game with that gameplay by tango

>average horror
the opening 5 minutes are the best horror experience in a video game of all time

Play on nightmare and it becomes intense survival horror and way less of a shooter. Different enemy locations too. Amazing game either way.

I love how the prologue is totally misleading on what the rest of the game is like. They also turned that part into demo to further fool people.

After that, it becomes a Michael Bay movie, tho

no OP but
>average action game and average horror
you could describe something like RE4 the same way

TEW had pretty good and complex gameplay, there were always shittons of way to deal with a situation, it surely wasn't just a generic tps action game.

As for the horror part it really wasn't scarry but had a nice grotesque atmosphere going for it and a pretty good story (tho the game did a poor job in explaining it)

>mfw some people thought you have to burn every single enemy and bitched about the lack of matches

It sets up the rest of the game. Not misleading at all. If you played the beginning and didn't think you'd be picking up a weapon at some point then you're mental. And on the harder difficulties you have to use the stealth elements introduced

>scripted as fuck
>forced stealth that's easy enough to get over it quickly once you realize that aiming bottle and walking or just walking doesn't alert the chainsaw dude
>completely unlike the rest of the game
I don't hate the game as some Sup Forumstards but come on

Let me explain myself a little further, because I clearly like the game, but at the same time, I hate it so much

It is a AAA amazing horror title, but it is using old gaming mechanics from another generation
it is crippled on purpose

so the game feels tedious to me, and repetitive
the bullets scarcity... fuck

I replayed the same section 4 times in a row... that is not difficulty by today's standards

this game, in 2005 is a cult classic
but when it was released, the game felt pretty aged

the ending section, that is literally military action, didn't surprise me at all, judging by the last RE... even RE4 turns into that

+ graphics, aesthetics, bosses, introduction
- artificial difficulty, horrible pace, unbalanced enemies...

will play again, anyway. still prefer a game like this more than any of the trash they release these days

I enjoyed RE7, too

I forgot, once again:
the stealth DLC is pretty cool, in the line of the prologue
you must play that

At first I thought that too since enemies in Siren never die. But after observing one corpse for a long time I figured out that they don't.

The problem for me was that the intro was so great that everything fell flat afterwards. After a while the game just becomes an enemy gauntlet and that's just boring.

>vague plot dlc required

This isn't true, is it?

I had a general idea of exactly what had happened from playing the base game alone, I can only imagine the DLC is just specifics that you don't really need to know.

We discussed it at release. The general consensus was even with the game breaking bugs put aside, it was a shallow paint by numbers effort.

Upgrade damage on your pistol and basic crossbow bolts, don't bother upgrading health because the large medkits upgrade it anyway, and most bosses have instakill moves that are the only real things you have to worry about.

If you have the option to kill an enemy without using your gun, use that option first.

There, unless your aim is godawful, shouldnt be too tough. Remember your character moves more like in Souls games than he does in RE4, so you can run backwards while keeping the camera at an enemy. This makes it easy to bait out an attack and then shoot them during their very slow recovery animations.

>people keep complaining about bullet scarcity

Currently on Akumu chapter 5because I needed a reason to hate myself more

There's plenty of ammo and matches.
The game seems to also have bumped the weapons' crit-chance so headshots kill enemies more often on Akumu and because I upgraded my pistol's critchance to max straight away, the game still pukes out upgrade points like crazy
Not to mention, the enemies seem to drop ammo upon death when you have next to none.
Am I getting good RNG or are people just bad

thank you for the advice, mate

Most people playing games now are used to unlimited ammo.

Have you never played a survival horror game before? Don't use your ammo unless you have to, lure enemies into traps, light everything on fire, every level has enviromental hazards, you can one shot all enemies by sneaking up on them, or use bottles to throw at their heads which will stun them for a couple of seconds which leaves them open to getting one shotted. If an enemy is fast you can kneecap them by shooting their feet and you can do a follow up with a one shot stomp. There are arrows which are re-usable.

Basically, the game is filled with plenty of ways to dispatch enemies without firing a single bullet. Granted the game never explains any of these mechanics, you pretty much have to learn them through trial and error.

>There are arrows which are re-usable.
what

now that I think of it, I guess that I have played the whole RE series
thanks for the advice, and with that and the other anons, I will try to finish it once again

but to be honest, I want to have fun
difficult but fun
I have called bullshit 2 times with this one haha

>dumb widescreen
The black bars got an toggle option years ago, you dumb nigger.

The intro is generic saw gore porn shit. To call it the greatest horror experience games have ever offered is to paint horror as a really uninspired genre.

Anyone who thinks Sh2 isn't the best survival horror game is a fucking retard desu

Prologue was great, never got past the awful first chapter.

More advice:

If you got plenty of matches and you don't face many enemies at once, shoot enemies in the legs instead and burn them when they're on the ground.

Basic crossbow bolts are game-breakingly powerful when you upgrade them to max.

Four-armed Lady boss is much easier if you burn all the corpses in the room before she spawns. She moves much more sluggish when she can't teleport all over the place, plus every corpse is like a 1-up for her.

Upgrade shotgun and rifle the last, they're powerful enough in tier 1 and the upgrades dont really make them significantly better. Shotgun + matches is a better combo than upgraded shotgun.

Melee is as useless as it is in Dead Space, it only sends a basic enemy backwards so you can aim at his head more easily, thats the only thing its useful for.

Upgrade your sprint to at least level 3 as quickly as you can.

Flash bolts are useful for killing large crowds of enemies, first you shoot a flash bolt, they get stunned. Then you can stealth kill them while they're stunned. Frozen bolt is good for any mid-boss tier enemy like chainsaw guy or the huge dog creature.

what's the point of burning enemies then?
literally none?

>the opening 5 minutes are the best horror experience
>>The first 5 minutes of this alone destroy completely Re4,5,6,7 and silent hill 2

what the fuck kind of fresh retardation is this

this game's story and beginning sections were one of the worst I've ever seen in a horror game

Casual plebs, first one is the best Silent Hill of them all.

You cannot honestly think TEW is better than RE4.

I like the game but I started to get kind of tired later on of how grotesque the game was

You can use it to kill enemies around it as a sort of aoe bomb, but the hitbox is wonky as f
You can knock down an enemy via shotgun blast or by shooting their legs while they are running. And insta kill them with it, conserving ammo and maybe killing a few extra enemies along the way on top of it

not at all, Sh1 is just an easier, less mature version of Sh2.

Its your one-hit kill stomp. And it does work on enemies who are pretending to be dead. If the shotgun blast doesnt kill all the monsters in front of you, you can burn the ones laying on the ground.

>plus every corpse is like a 1-up for her
Is that true? I always saved the corpses for match fuel

>>The first 5 minutes of this alone destroy completely Re4,5,6,7 and silent hill 2
it's exactly because of delusional fags like you that this game should be forgotten.

I just copy and pasted the whole thing into the game folder
I will definitely replay it again

thank you gois

With the corpses it took 8-9 ignites for her to die.

Tried burning the corpses when I played it again, this time she died from 3 ignites, one torch, one flame bolt and one furnace.

The Silent Hill games are just too damn easy to call them serious survival horror. They give you more health and weapons than you could ever need, the player character can tank hits all day long, the combat mechanics is button mashing and the enemy AI is so bad you can run past most of them and they can't do anything about it.

2's aethetics were Ascended God tier you philistine.

but the first 15 minutes is literally the only bad part of the game with forced stealth and slow limping. why would you bring that up

nobody plays survival horors for the combat

nobody here appreciates The Asigment and The Consequence?

it is what I really liked about the game, desu

Yes, they do. Gameplay is what makes it a SURVIVAL horror game as opposed to just a horror game. If you don't think the gameplay matters then just go watch a fucking film.

I said combat not gameplay

Then play them on hard. Problem solved. First game has monsters getting back up superfast if you dont stomp them, and so much of them that you have trouble conserving your ammo for them.

2nd and 3rd game monsters move faster the harder the difficulty is, also your melee weapons "bump" from enemies in a realistic fashion in harder difficulties. Some of them also learn nasty new moves.

3rd game all you do is run away in hard. 4th game can get ridiculously tough to a point of a ruined playthrough if you didn't religiously take all your medpacks and heal in your room before the mid-half of the game.

no, nobody plays horror games for the fucking combat

I thought they were annoying. The stealth was too shallow to be interesting. And the story was pretty clear in the main game, I don't understand why people didn't get it. The DLC was just there to spoonfeed it

Why? Because Silent Hill has shit combat and it's your favorite horror game? Fuck off.

I don't particularly care about the story
I enjoyed the gameplay more than the main campaign

now that anons have taught me how to play the game, I will revisit

but right now, for me the DLC was the only thing that I enjoyed so far

I'd rather play a horror game that's an actually good horror game than a horror game that isn't a good horror game but has kind of cool combat that's not creepy or suspenseful

TEW doesn't even have cool combat

RE4 was similar and it played a lot smoother despite having similar tension because some of the enemies were able to fuck you up hard if you didn't kept them at bay

TEW is just shit

so getting guided on rails is scary now?

I remember getting as far as some corn field and I knew it was a complete waste of the 30gb it takes to pirate

And thank god with have great arbiters of horror, such as yourself, to tell us all what is good horror and what isn't.

Let me guess, psychological horror is best horror?

or maybe it's just you who has incredibly shit taste in horror games

I don't really get the hate around this game to be frank. The gameplay is solid and renew itself enough to remain interesting until the end. A good mix of pretty much everything that was done in the genre.
Sure, the story is a mess and the writing is kind of shit. Sure, the chapters 11 and 12 are horribly shit. But if shit writing and 1/7 of the game is a miss, then why do you even play videogames?

youtu.be/O0lZb1B7T9k

This fucker in the hard difficulty SH4. If you dont have at least one medallion, this guy fucks up your playthrough. You might still get hit a few times with a lot of damage if you already spent your silver bullet.

Oh I get it now, you're a contrarian/you have shit taste

I am sure pretty much everyone here will hate me for this, but Outlast 2 is dropping in two weeks, and I am pretty stoked about it

I always play this type of games in one sitting, and this is going to be the same way
it adds to the nightmare experience

did almost the same with RE7. the tension and relief from finishing it is pretty amazing

Or maybe you are just a pretentious twat?

>and Silent hill 2.

Ok enjoy your failure OP.

says the dumb faggot who compares this generic trash to some of the best horror games and belittles them to begin with

it turns into RE4 action about 4 hours into the game, but its very solid and is genuinely creepy. definitely more RE than anything beyond 4

>I always play this type of games in one sitting, and this is going to be the same way
it adds to the nightmare experience.

Same. Horror games I usually play in a marathon.

I made no comparisons to anything, I just have issue with Silent Hill being called the best game when it has such fucking awful gameplay.

You pseudo-intellectual fucktards with your MUH PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR bullshit are insufferable. I bet you can count the number of horror games you've ever played on one hand and yet you all still feel utterly justified in calling Silent Hill the best and all other horror games shit.

you are pathetic

And you are a pretentious faggot.

Silent Hill is an overrated franchise and now it's fucking dead and nobody cares but the obnoxious fanbase which everyone hates. Have fun whinging about how everyone is stupid because they don't like "good horror" for the rest of your life.

why can't you faggots like anything without it being polarizing. It's not better than re4, but it doesn't have to be, it's still a decent fucking game.

You people seem fucing miserable and have to autistically analyze anything and everything.

I'm not the retard you're replying to, but Silent Hill (2, since it's the only one I finished) is really interesting on its way to approach things. Like it's a good game for storyfags, but the way you play the game actually matters and can chang the ending.
Sure, they way they handled it was kind of wonky and not intuitive, but the idea behind it was interesting.
And as for the gameplay, I'm not sure that spewing IT'S SHIT is relevant. Remember that Silent Hill 2 was released on the early days of gen 6. We had to wait for Resident Evil 4, 3 years later, to actually give a gameplay that isn't shit for the horror genre. And even that is kind of shit compared to today.
So Silent Hill 2 is in that pretentious loop of it's shit because it's old, and it's because it's old that it's shit. But if Silent Hill games are dickridden that hard, it's basically because they are the first, and seemingly last serie to explore the good idea it has

I'm really curious about this amazing taste you seem to think you have.

Penumbra trilogy and Amnesia
All Resident Evil titles (even the shitty ones)
Kuon
All Silent Hills, except the PS Vita- and arcade shooter shitfest.
Ju-on the Grudge
Outlast
CoC
Cold Fear
Cryostasis
Kholat
Doom 3
F.E.A.R
Haunting Ground
Condemned (the first one, not the shitty second one)
Yomawari: Night Alone
Vanishing of Ethan Carter (kinda like a horror game at times)
Forbidden Siren 1, 2 and remake
Cursed Mountain
Night of the Sacrifice
Dreadout all episodes and DLC
Fatal Frames 1-3, (4th one on an emulator)
Hungry Ghosts (on an emulator)
SCP Containment breach
Calling
Dino Crisis
The Thing (Pc version)
Nightmare Creatures 1 & 2
The Suffering 1 & 2

Thats a quick look through my shelves and digital library. Casual plebs like you don't understand majority of horror games have clunky controls and shit combat. Silent Hill (the first one) is still the best horror game out there.

this game has the worst gunplay I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing

not only is the aiming complete shit but it also has a blindspot at point blank range making shooting ennemies in melee range ridiculously finicky

ripped off RE4's intro village sequence but made it worse in every way, then ran out of ideas and became a succession of corridors and shooting galleries with no substance or coherence

the story is too preocuppied by being as obtuse as possible to go anywhere interesting or exciting

game artificially makes ammo scarcer by limitng the amount you can carry to a ridiculously low number, the same kind of complete hack move the last of us pulled

overall it's shit

nice visuals tho

*blocks ur path*
*slow walks towards u*
*instantly kills u effortlessly*
pff..... too easy....

>game artificially makes ammo scarcer by limitng the amount you can carry to a ridiculously low number, the same kind of complete hack move the last of us pulled

Translation:

>I'm shit at aiming and managing my resources, so the game must be shit because I'm bad at it.

is that all you got

>AKUMU Chapter 5
Just wait until chapter 6, friend.

Why didn't that burned autismo insta kill you from the start.
Why did it take him almost the entirety of the game to take Seb seriously?
>that asshole once spawned when I was in a small room with no wiggle room to escape, insta killing me during that not-spence mansion segment

Widescreen was fixed ages ago

The dlc is great but not necessary at all

It was what resident evil 5 should've been

>double returns after a single sentence
What's the fuck is wrong with you? Are you posting on your Motorola razr?

It falls apart into ridiculous metaphysical clownshoes bullshit.

If it stayed with body horror and grounded shit it could have been the best Survival Horror game since Silent Hill 2, but since it's so stupid for more than half the game, it's pretty much just an RE4 mod.

>grounded shit
in what universe could a teleporting Joshua Graham (that you see in the beginning of the game) be grounded

I thought it was fun until I reached that chained up guy in the barn. The devs are so full of shit:
>Oh its a survival horror game. You should AVOID the enemies
The game won't fucking progress if you do not kill the chained up barn dude. So there is NO WAY to avoid it. Of course you also can't just kill him while he is still chained up. Needless to say I ran out of bullets and was NEVER ABLE TO KILL THAT FUCKER. That's when I gave up playing that game. Totally ruined it- shame.
Any advice? I might replay it.

Illusions.

>Any advice
read this thread.
Don't waste ammo
Don't play it like RE4
Stealth is still useful in select locations.
Pistol and Crossbow bolts are the only weapons worth upgrading. And maybe the sniper rifle's critchance so that it will always kill regular mooks with a headshot

>The first 5 minutes of this alone destroy completely Re4
Not at all.
>and silent hill 2
That's not even a comparison a retarded person would make.

The game was a 6/10 at best.
You're a dumbass. Play better games.

> don't play like RE4

RE started becoming more actiony and gave you tons of ammo by 2. That being said, if the player wasn't a complete retard, they'd often go for a knee shot and melee and knife to save ammo which was efficient. Which is what I would like to think is the common way people played RE 4.

>they'd often go for a knee shot and melee and knife to save ammo which was efficient
because melee was useful in RE4. Melee is pointless except for making some space in Evil Within.

>no FNAF
WHAT A CASUAL, HAHAHAHA

Did he wake up and out of the STEM thing by the end?
Is Ruvik inside Leslie now?

Yeah no. RE4 is one of the best action games of all time and still compares favorably to modern titles.

>The first 5 minutes of this alone destroy completely Re4,5,6,7 and silent hill 2

The intro is the worst part of the game though, it's 20 minutes of AAA walk and talk broken up by two very brief and incredibly barebones stealth sections, then it transitions into a Michael Bay cutscene.

Got AKUMU trophy on this when the game was new- the hardest part for me was when you're trapped in the house and enemies swarm in the windows.

I really enjoyed this game and I liked challenging myself to play very carefully.

>Kuon
Cannot recommend this enough. Too bad Sup Forums is too pleb to know anything about it.

is it that game with a sadako looking girl

>psychological horror is best horror
Sounds about right. Slasher horror is never scary.

Yeah, with magic and shit. All worth it for the atmosphere.
