In P3 hates you for a month or so just because you're better than him but he never gives a concrete reason as to why. He's probably the most interesting out of all those characters.

P4 Yosuke's just kind of boring, sort of takes the role of de facto leader of the group, always figuring out stuff to do while everybody else just follows him.

P5 Ryuji was the best in my book, right up until he called me on the phone (after texting me for the entire fucking game) and essentially said "Hey, BATMAN, want to come back to the BATCAVE at WAYNE MANOR behind the GRANDFATHER CLOCK to talk about the criminals we're going to apprehend? Alright, see you later BATMAN!"

Ryuji is more likable outside of how obscenely stupid they make him. Junpei' s the strongest character. Yosuke's a bad middleground: intentionally flawed but without Junpei' s depth.

The issue with kanji was that he was a gay joke from the start. I mean it was pretty much lets look at what an actual gay person may actually have to deal with but lets make it a joke and he's not really gay lol. It's one thing if he was just effeminate but then they had to just swerve right into maybe he's gay for the entire part. Calling him a sissy would have driven the point.

After seeing all the insecurities Kanji had he still would call him a faggot to his face whenever he could. Yosuke is a prick and was quickly benched when I got a fourth party member.

Yosuke just wanted friends in a place that he found really boring. There wasn't anyone he could relate to, and working through the whole shallow emotions thing was part of his character growth. He starts out pretty conceited, but he's an alright lad underneath all that.

I'm not far enough in P5 to judge Ryuji yet. I like him, but something I really liked about Junpei is that he has an arc within the greater narrative. He starts as your slacker buddy, falls for a girl, makes some dumb mistakes that put everyone's safety in jeopardy, tries to help his waifu get better, then when she finally dies, he mourns, accepts her passing, ad is then blessed with her special healing power, which makes him a more viable ally in battle.

That's a cool progression. Yosuke spends the whole game as your personal Yes Man. His S Link isn't very meaningful in the grand scheme of things. He doesn't change that much from start to end.

While making the whole thing a joke wasn't helping it, part of it is about sexual uncertainty. Just calling him a wimp would be beating around the bush; Kanji's afraid he's gay and that, if he is, he's entirely defined by those stereotypes.

That said, none of P4's teenage conflicts were written well. Yosuke and Chie had interesting ones that were glossed over, Yukiko's is almost inconsistent at points and can't seem to decide if it wants to lean more on burden of responsibility, family, a stationary life, etc. Rider's is probably handled best but is still clunky, Mitsuo's is barely even brought up, and Naoto's almost feels like the writers were afraid to be direct about it.

The points are there, but the way they handle it is terrible.

Ryuji is extremely static. He has more going on under the surface than Yosuke did, but he isn't dynamic like Junpei.

Really, P5's biggest writing flaws are that a BIG chunk of the game feels like they're asking for another stab at 4 and that it's so focused on actually fleshing out characters that none of them really develop.

Yosuke is an insecure whiny baby who puts others down to boost himself, and the source of that is simply inherent pettiness rather than a hangup. It's really hard to like him because he's honestly just a worse person than his friends.

Junpei just has a serious inferiority complex between his upbringing, Yukari mocking him every day of his life, and despite being one of the most special people on the planet with the power of a Persona, he's still not THE most special because the protagonist is here.

I do think it's poorly explored and you have to read deep between the lines, but it's believable for his character and makes him one of the best bros in the long run. Still, he suffers because Atlus thought socializing with your male teammates was a waste of time.

Persona 3 had a lot of traitors

They are if you want them to be.
Labrys being Golden' s bonus dungeon character instead of Marie would have made the game miles better. Having her as a late game social link would have given us an opportunity to see how each party member had grown as a person, helping her become more sociable and work through her problems the same way the protag helped them.

In the flipside though I'm stuck between the two.

Trismegistus has a better helmet and color scheme but Hermes doesn't suffer from having too many wings. The hand wings were enough.

Trismegistus is too much Hermes and not enough Thoth for me to consider a good design

Io was one of my favorite basic personas but Isis had to go and be what the fuck is all this shit, especially shitty since it basically takes the cow head and just fucks that up. All you had to do was make it a different girl and mak the cow head a bit fancier.
