Just to add a twist and some sort of wierd moral choice.
todd has daddy issues
Todd didn't write it, it's all Emil Whatshisname
They realized the Institute is pants of head retarded with no redeeming qualities whatsoever so they neded to add at least one reason to join them.
>other game did something we wanted to do
>welp I guess we can't do it anymore
k
It was a stepping stone for the player to join the Institute. FO4 was probably too complicated for you.
What was the Institute plan? I know they where body swapping to influence from the inside but its just seems like they were replacing everyone and not even being subtle about it. So basically all they done was caused mass paranoia and made people not want to trust anyone
I felt truly amazed when I finally got to the institute and it was all revealed to me, not in the sense I was impressive but I actually sat in awe at how anticlimatic and fucking garbage it was.
You gotta have respect for your fellow writers, don't want to steal their thunder
This, they tried to flesh out the reasoning for you joining the institute, and this is the closest thing to any sensible reason.
Which is annoying because they didn't bother to flesh out the brotherhood or railroad's reasoning, and your son is a dick.
But I guess it's still more incentive to join a faction than new vegas where all you get is 1000 caps after already having tens of thousands.
Wouldn't making the Institute well written with reasonable goals and an actual force for positive change be a better reason? You know, instead of making them a closed group of retards who send androids out to kill civilians.
But then how do you have the epic opening that leads to the epic quest to save your family?
If the Institute were decent people, they would have just let everyone out of the pods and explained that in a shithole wasteland, they had the best facilities for survival and invited them all to come have a look
>Much better plot twist
>Replaced by shit
YAMAROO!
Which would have been a better story. An attempt by a competent group to unite the human factions of the Commonwealth to rebuild and reclaim the land. Your wife and child could have still been alive and you might have had meaningful interactions with them as opposed to being expected to care about them just because.
But what the hell. Bethesda doesn't seem to care about exploring the rebuilding of civilization in a post-apocalyptic world. They just use the setting as an excuse to build a sandbox for the player to kill loot return.
there was none.
The purpose of replacement synths was to infiltrate and gather data/subvert the populace not kill civilians, you really are too stupid for a Bethesda game.
Where do the replaced people go?
Another fine example of Emil Pagliarulo's quality "writing"
youtube.com
>reasonable goals
That's the missing element. No one has one. The Institute claims to have the only goals of:
advancing technology
helping mankind
But they don't connect any of their above-ground actions to those things. They just claim they're "investigating" the world above-ground. Father/Shaun even claims that he doesn't like the above-ground world or care about it because he has spent his whole life in ignorance of it. This directly clashes with how the Institute has supposedly been conducting above-ground operations with synths for decades, long enough for Father/Shaun to age from a baby to an old man.
the funniest thing for me was the second he walked through the door, I quicksaved and blew his head off. I was fucking ROLLING when i loaded and he told me he was my son
To shock you
>where all you get is 1000 caps
That's your payment for completing your courier job
Good point.
And the worst part is that that's the last thing anyone gives you.
There's zero incentive to join any faction in new vegas.
I did this too, 10/10 to the game for allowing it.
The factions are about ideals in New Vegas, not material rewards. You're allowed to have a discussion with each faction's leader before you have to join one, and they all have wildly different stances on how to rule the Mojave.
It was literally the only reason not to nuke The Institute.
Too bad they couldn't come up with anything for the Railroad.
They took out the sensible revelation that you are the robots john because someone decided it wouldn't focus test well or whatever but still needed to have a twist.
>The factions are about ideals in New Vegas, not material rewards
Fucking retarded, it doesn't help that every single ideal in the new vegas faction is retarded, but disregarding that completely the idea of a video game that tries to convince you to join a faction with zero purpose, no character reasoning, nothing to gain, risking your life for characters who treat you with disdain to get slightly more power, is pretty insulting to the intelligence of the player, it assumes you'll beat the game for the sole purpose that it is a video game and it has a conclusion, which is terrible design.
>Fallout 4 : Synths Story
Really Beth?
Everyone figured out the Sole Survivor was a Synth during the fucking teaser trailer, so they had to pull "Your son is a Synth!" out of their ass.
>The Incredibles...It's a movie about super heroes...wrong, it's a movie about family
Why am I watching a man give a talk about themes in stories when he just demonstrated that he doesn't understand themes in stories. He talks about 'keeping it simple' as though that just means keeping it as surface level as possible.
why doesn't bethesda just hire good writers?
Don't fix what ain't broke
The real question is why are there no good writers in the west. The last bastion of good dialog and story is CDPR.
Bioware, bethesda, and even all the indies just make trash now for the sake of lore-dumps.
Their stories are easily accessible and they sell very well. They have no reason to hire new people.
All the factions in FO4 are shit
>BoS: Imperialist retards who travel miles up the coast, wasting countless resources to fight a one-sided war with a gaggle of eggheads in a wasteland ripe with abominations - technological or otherwise.
>Railroad: Radical terror group that places android life above all, manipulating their own allies and destroying families for the sake of liberating an oppressed minority- while the rest of the world suffers beneath them.
>Institute: Backwards idiots who marvel at their own ingenuity, despite the fact that many of their "achievements" are outclassed by scientists hundreds of years ahead of them, and can't even secure basic amenities to support a functional society.
Basically they trusted androids more than men because if the androids were doing Something Naughty they could just shut them down rather than waste time negotiating or whatever.
TLDR complete and utter control of the Wasteland for no appreciable reason other than being completely drunk on power.
Why did they just take one person from the vault anyways? The reasoning is that they wanted someone "clean" but everyone in the vault was clean and not exposed to radiation. The whole story could have been over in the beginning if the Institute just rescued everyone from the vault.
BoS kinda made sense to me.
They're trying to establish an empire so they're willing to take the resource lost for the sake of gaining manpower. Assuming their logistics are in-place they have the best chance of accomplishing anything in the commonwealth.
The railroad has nothing, they don't have scavangers and they let any robots they save go. they don't operate on donations either. In theory they should have starved themselves out of the war already.
The institute has the tech but no supply lines, just high-loss-rate robots looting the surface for scraps, I don't really understand how they got as far as they did without ever leaving the basement of MIT.
>cdpr
they just take shit from the books
>The purpose of replacement synths was to infiltrate and gather data/subvert the populace not kill civilians, you really are too stupid for a Bethesda game.
What purpose does that serve other than making everyone paranoid?
Wouldn't it be easier to get people on your side by going into the nearest squalid shanty town and showing the miserable wretches the live there how the Institute can Make America Great Again via roboslavery?
You can spring the DARK SECRETS™ on the player when they actually give a shit about the outcome.
worst part of f4?
>sheathe weapon
>disappears
>jimmlies maximum lvl. Rustled
The general plot yes, but even geralt as a character isn't remotely similar between the books and games. And the plot is the weakest part IMO, it's CDPR's banter and character development that does it for me.
Jesus christ that was so dumb, sure there's a mod to fix it but it was a little finicky if I recall.
Bethesda's writers can't think of any way to make a character important to the player except to make them family.
>Assuming their logistics are in-place they have the best chance of accomplishing anything in the commonwealth.
Well, that's the thing- they don't. It's repeatedly mentioned that the Prydwen needs a lot of maintenance and power to keep running, and they're so short on provisions they steal from farmers/wastelanders to keep supplied.
They're Raiders with shiny Power Armor.
>they don't operate on donations either.
IIRC the railroad is funded by wealthy patrons
>They're Raiders with shiny Power Armor
The original Elder Maxson is spinning in his grave, I'm sure
>someone tells me what went on in the trailer for fallout 4 before it comes out
>tell him that the bad guy is your kid
pottery
You know the original would have been crap too.
>Dad! I found you!
>But son/honey...I'm...A MONSTER...
>the two of you pump bullets into each others' faces for fifteen seconds to two minutes, depending on difficulty level, until Dad bloody-messes into eyeballs
>alternatively, if Dad doesn't go hostile, he just sits there and waits until you shoot him in the head with no fanfare
Jesus, these guys really can't write worth shit. Why would it be moving? I barely (if at all) interacted with my kid before he's being turned into a mutant. Why would I give a fuck? I didn't give a fuck when I met him in the game's story either.
Do these retards not understand you need to flesh characters out and give you time with them for you to give a shit?
>Scene set
>This is your son
>He has cancer
>He dies
>The player will surely be distraught by this
No, motherfucker. I don't give a fuck because I barely even know this character. You literally just introduced them.
That twist would've fucking sucked too.
Something that just came to mind...
When searching for Kellog with Nick, Dogmeat is the one that picks up his scent. Even if you don't have Dogmeat currently with you, he shows up.
But what happens if you never met Dogmeat at all? Do you get an extra quest to find something that can track down Kellog?
They keep saying that but it's the commonwealth, there's no such thing as wealthy patrons.
But they couldn't even control the fucking androids, fuckers kept escaping all the time.
The BoS were THE good faction. People who call them Nazis are probably the same people who throw that term at anything they dont personally like.
>Constantly dropping knights from vertibirds to engage mutants and raiders
>The only ones actively trying to track down the institute, which everyone hates or is terrified of
>Only interested in acquiring powerful and dangerous technology, by trade if possible.
Meanwhile we have th railroad who literally only work to save synths without a care of any of the consequences involved (the synth raider quest, anyone?), the minutment who are just too god damn self and unorganized, and the institute is full retard.
Wealthy for the commonwealth.
Nope. Nick uses a dog whistle to summon him outside Kellogg's house
The Commonwealth doesn't share your sentiment.
>But what happens if you never met Dogmeat at all?
Nick whistles in some frequency and Dogmeat appears the same way. They already knew each other i.e. lazy writing.
The BOS is the best faction on a faction level, but their people are also by far the shittiest human beings in the commonwealth.
So they replaced a good and fun cliche, with an overused cliche that didn't add up to anything.
Truly master writers.
They're scientists, engineers and programmers. Of course they're going to favour the thing they work on no matter how shoddy it is
Especially when the alternative would be starting from scratch to invent some kind of human controlling device to stop people potentially betraying them
Make you think you're a bad guy for killing your son
....What?
I can somewhat accept Dogmeat convienently coming to help you because he was worried about the player and just arrived at the scene.
But this is fucking stupid. Dogmeat has no reason to be around the area like this.
> Nick is already friends the super useful dog with amazing tracking skills, which would be great for his profession
> Just leaves the damn thing in the wasteland with all the raiders and mutant bugs
Those three characters are not the whole commonwealth and are shunned by much of the population around them as well. Nothing they said is exactly wrong either, especially concerning mutants.
Also got a kick out of Garvey's comment. Minutemen were a collection selfish dicks which is exactly why they failed. Nigga is just jealous.
IIRC, one of their patrons is the guy in charge of Bunker Hill, which is supposed to be a hub of Commonwealth trade. He's probably got a lot of financial clout to throw around.
That entire scene is fucked up because originally dogmeat was suppose to be a permanent third companion instead of an optional second one.
The good faction is the Minutemen. Fucking clear as day. BoS has the nicest toys to play with, but they don't give a shit about helping people.
>Meanwhile we have th railroad who literally only work to save synths without a care of any of the consequences involved (the synth raider quest, anyone?
To be fair, they're just reverting them to a clean slate and turning them loose on the wasteland. They don't have any control over what they choose to do with their lives.
If the BoS rescues a guy from super mutants and then that guy goes on to eat a dozen babies, that's not on them either.
Shouldn't you be home crying for your dead waifu Arthur?
Little different when you're talking about functionally immortal machine people, what with the possibility of them being evil raider scum for centuries
Bethesda cant into story writing
the Brotherhood know dick about the Commonwealth
Baby-eating guy could eat babies for decades, which is still pretty awful.
Unless by functionally immortal you mean unkillable, but Fallout 4 veers wildly back and forth on just how tough synths actually are.
Explaining the reasoning being why you wear a toilet as an high tech armor.
I like how much maxon goes on about synths being the worst science abortinations when big MT exists
That's what happens when you write a sequel without checking the story it is supposed to be coming from.
Why does the railroad just mind wipe synths anyway? Especially since there's a chance to make them brain dead.
Does the BoS know about Big MT? The east coast BoS, in particular?
They only do it when the synths request it, presumably to integrate into their new lives better (and thus reduce the risk of being found out).
>Anons actively discussing FO4 lore and factions.
Everything resembling a story or background that game had was shit, character development was shit, voiced protag was shit, the choices were pure shit.
Only thing that game had going for it were the tinkering and pointy shooty action, everything else was a massive let down and a downgrade, even comparing it to FO3 makes the clusterfuck of closed maps and metro tunnels look like GOTY.
It's an RPG, user. Carrot on the stick isn't the only variable it can use.
>STOP TALKING ABOUT THINGS I DON'T LIKE
Yeah well it should use something, because it's a better variable than nothing.
It was a top secret research facility, even if they did blow up an entire mountain
It's your character, you create the motivations for your actions. The alternative is Bethesda's way with their MUH SHAUN.
Morrowind was okay.
I wanted it to be good. I tried to like it, do you know how hard it it to get hyped for a game or to look for it's release?
But I couldn't even finish half of it, shit performance, long loading times an muh choices.
Make it turn based and release it for phones using the same casual crap and shitty writing/choices and it'd rake in the dough like crazy.
Fuck now that I think about it why haven't the first two fallouts been ported to android yet?
>It's your character, you create the motivations for your actions.
No, that's fanfic headcanon bullshit. I'd rather just imagine myself playing a better game in a better setting while sitting in a cardboard box if the dev is going to be a lazy pile of shit who doesn't want to flesh out plot or characters in a game that is all about plot and characters.
All you're left with is a magical mary sue who has no personality to speak of and can do literally anything.
...
Because they are problematic
Because the average person honestly couldn't care less about good writing. It's just there to create a context for the game, making the bar for quality very low. That's why they can retcon, create glaring inconsistencies and boring factions and not a single person bats an eyelid.
>All you're left with is a magical mary sue who has no personality to speak of and can do literally anything.
It's almost like you're supposed to make your own character.

You are wrong.
New Vegas is a very good western homage, with fairly well characterized NPCs and a fleshed out plot. Earlier you brought up getting 1000 caps as a reward, you realize the point is that the sum for the job wasn't worth it, right? It's conveying a cynical message about the wasteland and the world, that I am beginning to think you're just too dense to understand.
muh moral dilemma
Yeah, you do, in the first 5 minutes, followed by having a faceless personality-less npc-tier character for the rest of the game.

Oh, so the game doesn't actually want me to complete the pointless main story, because it's hipster bullshit?
Wow, so deep, you're right user, that is just 2deep4me.
I thought the purpose of a game developer was to make a good video game, while in reality the game has no game developers, rather artisan gamecrafters who instead of making a game made a finely crafted avant-garde masterpiece.
Shame I wasted all those hours playing it instead of realizing I was just suppose to sniff the box along side some wine and brie.
>Yeah, you do, in the first 5 minutes, followed by having a faceless personality-less npc-tier character for the rest of the game.
Shit sorry didn't realise this was b8.
