It works in Blood's case because Caleb's not trying to be witty, he's just fucking nuts and can't help himself.

First episodes always had the most impressive level designs coupled with the easiest difficulty balancing.

I thought pretty much all of them were better than the first episode.

The only thing episode one has going for it is is the lower difficulty from trying to ease you into the weapons and enemies.

I dunno.
Cultists (read; hitscanners) were less common in the later episodes, so that kind of made them more enjoyable.

It's like if Doom had an its episode 1 full of nothing but chaingunners, but the later ones added all the other monsters
