What did I miss? I thought this was free?
is this the same black mesa source that was around about 3 years ago?

Standalone is paid, mod is free
I think you can still get the free version. The paid version funded a ton of extra work though.
Like bringing the game to GNU/Linux.
Free version is still out there, just incomplete, complete version is paid
monthly was a mistake
still no xen
fuck you i liked xen
Only played HL1 a few times when I was a kid. Loved HL2, it shaped a lot of my childhood together with CSS and GMod and all that shit. Want to play HL1, should I get this or just the original edition?
>complete version is paid
The paid version still doesn't have Xen.
whats the difference?
HL1 is still pretty good. Haven't played black mesa though. probably worth it to try it out
pirate both.
If you really loved half-life, get the original (not half-life: source, the original) then try out the Black Mesa remake.
Opposing Force (expac for half-life 1 made by Gearbox, probably the best game that company has ever made)
If you don't actually care that much and you just want a fun shooter get Black Mesa
I really like Xen too. It was refreshing to finally go somewhere else after nearly five hours of underground tunnels.
Man, my dogs were barking and I didn't complete my thought.
Opposing Force is great and worth a try if you liked the original Half-Life 1.
Black Mesa isn't even finished and while they claim the final portion will come out this summer I wouldn't really count on it considering they're so slow making it it's been like eight or nine years now.
The original is better and has mod support and official expansions.
>Opposing Force (expac for half-life 1 made by Gearbox, probably the best game that company has ever made)
Hard to believe it. It's probably not the same people there anymore though
>GNU/linux
so it's fucking nothing?
better updates, content, support, workshop shit, eventual official xen.
Basically it's a more updated version, they aren't doing anything else to the free one.
Not only is it now a paid "game", it's also STILL unfinished.
Randy directed it kek
Black Mesa Source was announced in 2005. Full Trailer was released in 2008. Official release date was "late 2009", then later changed "when it's done". First Black Mesa release was September 14 2012. Xen will allegedly be released in 2017.
I mean, it's a fun game and these were just amateur hobbyists with a day job doing this shit on their spare time. Once they actually started charging money for this shit though in 2013 that kinda public goodwill goes out the window.
So did I.
I'm still pissed they haven't added it in yet even though they say they've been working on it for nearly as long as it took the mod to come out in the first place by now.
Even fanmade Half Life games are vaporware
Legacy version is still free via the website.
Xen soonTM
>We'll finish it soon
>No really we mean it this time
>Almost finished, hang in there
>Soon guys, any day now
>K it's released
>oh but no Xen
>and we cut entire sections out
>Xen will be done soon though, don't worry
>any day now
>hold tight, almost there
>Nah nvm we're on greenlight now, but Xen is coming
>oh but you have to buy the game now to play it, we're not working on the free version anymore
>Xen will be finished soon though, so please buy the game
>Really guys, Xen will be finished soon
>...guys?
Don't even think of buying this shit. These faggots have been promising Xen for almost as long as HL3 has been vaporware
>not knowing that Randy literally came up with Valve's name during a poker game
He pretty much invented Steam as well but Gabe stole it from him and due to contractual obligations he can't do anything about it.
That looks like it's taken straight out of Dear Esther. Not alien enough.
I don't like the manmade looking stuff in there. Loved Xen because it felt like you were in genuine uncharted territory and the only remnants of previous people were dead corpses. It also makes no sense that you created a rift that brought the aliens over if Black Mesa has had access to Xen the entire time instead of going there as a last ditch effort to stop the aliens.
I do like it because the whole "humans leaving their mark in alien territories" thing gives me a boner.
>Black Mesa has had access to Xen the entire time
They literally did, that's the whole point. The Lambda Complex was all about teleportation experiments, that's why HEV suit is designed with combat in mind, that's why you find dozens of dead personnel on Xen, that's why you find facilities where Xen fauna is studied - did you assume it all was set up in dozens of hours that went since the resonance cascade? The cascade just caused spontaneous teleportation of Xen organisms on Earth, but humans already poked and probed the borderworld before it.
Fuck you don't prove me wrong and make me feel stupid.
this
Sorry. I just really like this kind of scenario. I liked what they added to HL1 so I am excited to see what they'll add to Xen - they hinted it won't be a simple 1:1 remake.
This. Xen has been 'coming soon' since 2012.
That story wasn't fucking true retard.
There's more. Weapon animations/models, effects, sounds shit like that. I played the paid version and I did notice a lot of differences from when i played the mod back in 2012.

Half-Life Source
Black Mesa isn't HL1, so comparing them is stupid. Both are good games that have strong and weak points.
I think it literally is half-life 1 though. The level design for Black Mesa is 90% based on the design of half-life 1's design excluding xen levels. Comparing the games is perfectly sane.
Care to explain your reasoning further?
He doesn't like it therefore it isn't.
The mechanics are significantly different, and I can't say I prefer either game 100%.
I guess what I meant is that I would recommend playing both games. Original first, BM second. Playing original shouldn't stop you from playing BM, and playing BM doesn't mean original isn't worth playing. Compare it to something like different patches of HL, or HL and HL Source, where Source isn't worth playing at all, and while some patches are worse or better (which one was the one which made SMG even fucking worse?), if you played one you played HL.
>He doesn't like it
I said in my post that I think it's a good game. I like it all right, okay?
there's a few problems with black mesa
the enemy AI seems weak and a lot of the timings just seem off, grunts and vortigaunts especially
then there's all this really unfitting music that's a bit too loud and slightly too ambient in places, and in other places it's too pseudo-dramatic
a lot of the npc dialogue is also pseudo-dramatic, and that classic hl1 charm is all gone
also a lot of the weapon sounds aren't very good
in addition
surface tension and on a rail were pretty gutted
and a lot of the levels don't really seem to take the best advantage of the source engine's features
or where they could expand on things - they simply don't
Member when they said the mod is NEVER EVER gonna cost money?
I member.
Grunts are deadly in 2011 mod, but people hated it for some reason.
Surface Tension is supposedly restored in Steam version.
Black Mesa has its own soundtrack which while good, doesn't hold a candle to Half-Life's legendary one.
fpbp
>then there's all this really unfitting music
I actually think it's great, but you can just replace it with the original soundtrack by swapping the files in the music folder
>I actually think it's great
it is, but it just doesn't really fit in with the game
xen's gonna be out this summer. they said so!
the soundtrack is excellent
>make an okay mod
>realize HL fans are starving for a new game for their favorite series
>ask money for the mod
>two years in early access, five years since the first release
>still no Xen
good shit, I never realized that shit
The Steam version of HL1 is shit
>Breaks countless mods
>No Overbright
>No Surround Sound
>Uses texture filtering twice, just to make the textures extra blurry, because fuck you
I still think the Vanilla version is the best because it still had shadows & leaning
The original of course.
It didn't use texture filtering twice (whatever that means). The issue was they prescaled textures that weren't playing ball with the engine so it looked fucked up, no matter if you played with nearest neighbor, bilinear, or trilinear. It's sort of like this, a shitty console game that internally runs at 1024x640 gets upscaled to 1280x720 by the engine and upscaled yet again to 1920x1080 by the console's upscaler to meet an HDTV's output of 1080p.

Has anyone seen a scientist die from shock? I swear I've seen scientists trembling just scream and fall over without taking any sort of damage. Other times I've crept up behind a scientist and poked them with E only to have them scream and fall over, like die from a heart attack or something. Can anyone else confirm?
Haven't played BM in forever but last I remember the AI was unfun as fuck to fight and more or less aimbot/wallhacked you. Stick with the original first.
>eventual official xen
LOL
new bit prittier weapon models and new textures, but its the same game
