What the fuck is wrong with the name pronunciations in this game?

What the fuck is wrong with the name pronunciations in this game?

>playing with the dub

How do you know if the Japanese dub is better if you don't understand the language?

How do you know if something wrong with name pronunciations if you don't understand the language?

Because of the comparative standards of the voice acting industries. Top of the line actors get hired for anime. Top of the line actors do not get hired to dub over anime. They get hired for Disney movies.

because the names are phonetic

Because the names are in the native language? And Japanese has a fairly strict limit to the sounds it can make?

All that matters is your perception of the quality, no the quality itself.

I understand enough Japanese to understand the side conversations that aren't subbed. It's all about context clues.

Emotion is also a universal thing. The dub VAs are dime store hacks, the original VAs are A list. Even if they were speaking martian you could tell.

last gen name pronunciations are always bad tho

Because the vocals in english are different from the ones in Japan, to start.

The voice director specifically coached the actors to pronounce the names incorrectly.

Japanese pretty much is Martian. The Kanji isn't enough, no, they also have to have caveman sentence structure and grammar.

>Japanese names will sound weird when used in English sentences
t. Erika "I've never met an Asian in my life" Harlacher

American voice acting is shit tier compared to the japanese one. It is decent when it is the original voiceover though.

No, American sentences, commie.

>The voice director specifically coached the actors to pronounce the names incorrectly.
what the actual fuck? Mis-pronouncing a name like Sakamoto or Kitagawa when fucking EVERYONE knows how to properly pronounce those names is fucking stupid.

That's like refusing to call someone Juan and just call them John instead because using Juan with english words makes it sound weird

WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT

>You will never be Takemi's Guinea Pig

There's nothing technically wrong with the pronunciations, but the stress is on the wrong syllables.

It's not like they're saying tack-uh-mack-ee, for example, they're just stressing the KA when you normally wouldn't.

holy shit we need to get atlus localization shutdown

SUCK UH MAH TOE

Atlus Japan literally sabotage the game so they have an excuse to go Asia only.

Keep in mind that the person talking about American words is the VA for Ann, not the actual voice director or anyone making the decision.

It was Atlus JP that coached them to pronounce it like that, not atlus usa.

>Suh KAH mo to
What the fuck? It's not like people pronounce Miyamoto as My-Ah-Mo-To. Wtf are those retard Japs smoking if they think people would actually be triggered by correct pronunciations of names? I get people preferring "anime" as "ann nim ayy" instead of "AH nee may", but names? No.

Stop fucking using the dub, casuals.

>you have to know Japanese to know that the Japanese audio is better than the English dub

The English actors aren't bad. When you compare the English cast to the Japanese cast, you can really see the difference between the Japanese VA industry and North American VA industry. Why do you think that a big name English VA like Troy Baker doesn't work on games like Persona 4 and Catherine anymore?

> Atlus Japan literally sabotage the game so they have an excuse to go Asia only.

That'd be dumb as fuck as America helps keep them a float.

>game gets delayed 7 months in the west for localization
>dub sucks
>subs for the JP track are inconsistent
>JP track isn't on the disc for some reason

The burg version is larger than the nip version and the nip voice DLC is rather small so I'm assuming the data is partially already on the disc. I ought to download the PS3 version and take a look for myself so I can know for sure.

That might be so, but isn't the total install space require on the HDD only 20.2 gigs or something like that? That leaves an extra 6 gigabytes or so of unused BD.

At least we got it at all though, those promotional videos for the dub had me getting worried before the delay to April.

They obviously had sufficient space to include the Japanese audio DLC on the disc, I was just voicing my tangentially related suspicions. It's probably a licensing issue for them or something, making it DLC lets them yank the DLC if they need to renegotiate instead of the entire game.

Man how could they have gone backwards?
the dubs in SMTIV and Apocalypse were fine granted most of the names were western but still

Ah I see, that would make sense.

>we trained them wrong on purpose as a joke

But I do understand the language, and it's actually better.

Ann
>Ahnn

>not pronounced like an
Triggered

Because Atlus USA is a bunch of hacks that have always blamed Atlus Japan for things.

Remember when it was Japan's fault we weren't getting a Japanese language track? But the English would be the greatest thing ever!

"Anime" is trickier because it's a double loan word short for "animeshon" the Japanese pronunciation of "animation". So etymologically speaking, pronouncing it in an English/American way is more technically correct.

makes sense. reminds me of how it was weird watching the akira redub when it came out 'cause they kept saying canada. english jap name pronunciation from the original dub was better.

Sorry, you're wrong bro. They borrowed it from the French, not the Americans.

>people getting triggered over name pronunciations
>live in UK, people are super picky about it here too
>no one ever comes close to correctly pronouncing my name, much less surname it's russian
>I'm completely fine with it
>I can't pronounce some names correctly myself
>as long as I have a sound to associate a person's face with, I'm good
Is it an English thing?

>playing with the dub
the only thing wrong is you

Are there download stats for the JP dub somewhere?

I want to know how many people bought+played the game vs how many people downloaded the japanese dub for it

shitty english voice acting, mostly?

Not that I can find. If I were to guess it'd be in the 33-45% range

I thought it would be more. Don't you basically have to be a weeaboo to buy persona 5?

Then again, I bet most “weeaboos” watch english dubs. Absolutely disgusting

I haven't watched anime in over a decade, but Persona/SMT is still GOAT.

I imagine this is how it went down.
>American, you say rike this, Sa-ka-mo-to
>Suck-KAH-mo-to?
>No, listen, it's Sa-ka-mo-to, there is no accent on the ka
>Suck-KAH-mo-to?
>...Yes.

Do you pronounce it KAHruhte, or BUshido?

Like you said, anime's gotten bigger and a lot of people in the West still watch English dubbed shows. But on top of that, P5 seems to be getting quite a bit of praise and is probably selling a bit more outside of the "weeaboo" audience.

My main criticism of P5 is the same reason I hate most anime

>hi let's watch an unsufferable cast of idiots fail their way through life
The only anime I end up enjoying to the end are the ones where the people actually seem to spend at least 5 seconds thinking before acting/talking

Nope not anymore recent interview said Asia is more important than Burgers and Bongs

Anime is for jerks, no arguments here.
But Persona is also a cool video game, so it gets a pass.

so much literal autism.

>But Persona is also a cool video game, so it gets a pass.
Honestlyu persona 5 could have been 5/5 for me if the balance was just different

We get like 80% annoying cutscenes where you have no control over the outcome, 15% gameplay and 5% waifu simulation.

It should be more like 1/3 of each.

What a terrible excuse. Research the fucking role you will be playing. Goddamn hack VS. I could Google how to say Sakamoto, why can't you?

>Game gives me 18 days to "prepare" for the Casino Boss fight.

How tough is it? Does it expect me to grind up?

Nothing its just telling you to max out your confidences

My problem is sometimes the english actors sound like they are reading the script verbatim without any coaching.

It sounds bland and boring as fuck sometimes.

slap on the jap voice, problem solved

Americans.

Jesus christ thank you, I thought I was crazy.
the two jailer kids in the velvet room and the shitty teacher chick literally sound like robots.

that's what you get when the VA guild goes on strike mid-way through recording

If the higher-ups ordered them to pronounce it that way, they had to. It was either follow orders and pronounce it the way they were told to, or be fired and end up as a hobo on the streets.
