What exactly is good about this game
it's better than its sequel
Honestly not much. Story is nice but there's hardly any of it and the dungeons just get annoyingly complex and not really interesting. 4>1>2>3
It was a good game for it's time and was one of the few translated jRPGs to have a full story, and did the "main girl dies" plot point several years before FF7 pulled it.
Unfortunately it's full of design choices that are pretty archaic now, mostly the absolutely HORRID dungeon designs (and that distracting pipe overlay on the technological ones is irritating as fuck).
Game was so bad PSIV pretty much ignored it aside from one small shout out.
ouch
Or maybe it was ignored because PS3 was a spin-off to the main story of the series?
Pretty much this. Hell if you look at it on the Japanese side it's even worse. The one and only thing people talk about is the death of Nei which happens around the first 1/3 of the game. The thing about Phantasy Star 2 is that there's really nothing else outside that. The game is literally "evil computer" and you just wondering around an annoying overworld and annoying dungeons. There's really nothing to the plot to keep you going once you hit that point.
It's the first 16-bit JRPG of note, for one thing.
It gets compared unfairly to later games, but is definitely an 80's era rpg.
Also, you go to other fucking planets, man. Robots, lasers, drama, it's got everything.
nothing, it was rushed to hell
>xxsepherothxx420 weighs in on a game 3x as old as him
Confirmed for never finishing it.
Also if you want plot read a book.
It's was good at the time.
Nowadays, not so much. It hasn't aged well
Face it Phantasy Star 2 isn't that good of a game. Nei might be the one and only thing memorable about the game and even it's not worth it. Layout of the world is sloppy as fuck, it's grindy as hell, throws characters at you with no real personality.
>It's was good at the time.
Nice meme.
It was okay in 89 and it's equally as 'just okay' now. The game has not changed.
Now, Phantasy Star 1 is good.
PS1-3 are barebones rubbish. PS4 has at least some characterization sprinkled onto the skeleton of an awful title.
See previous
It eventually brought us this one.
>newfag trying to fit in as he defends a game he played on an emulator once
I own both the original and several rereleases of PS1-4. PSII is aged and everything it did PSIV did better. Sega also hardly ever acknowledges PSIII even to this day.
Fit in with whom? You're the one giving me a resume, like I give a shit what you bought.
I never even mentioned IV, that was the FFfags.
Compare Phantasy Star 2 with Dragon Quest 3 and tell me which comes out on top. Hell Final Fantasy 2 I personally think is a better game than Phantasy Star 2.
PSII has excellent dungeon design and nei was a memorable character.
Unfortunately the combat was boring and thus the game was boring.
It's comparable to contemporary games (though even PSI is better) but that's not enough. I wouldn't recommend it.
>PSII has excellent dungeon design and nei was a memorable character
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
Combat was actually enjoyable if a bit clunky. Having the opinion to use AI or saved me a ton of time grinding.
The issue the game has is the level design. Getting around anywhere was a pain in the ass. With having to go through dungeons upon dungeons waving around bridges to reach points. It's wasn't fun at all.
Idk my dude, I remember loving the ending.
That opening scenario with the bandit father and his daughter was really incredibly retarded.
Shame the PS2 remake never got localized, they actually gave into demands and put in a method to save Nei.
you weren't alive 28 years ago.
>HURR I'M CRAZY INSANE ROBBER
>DADDY! I MUST STOP HIM
>SO INSTEAD OF OH I DUNNO TAKING OFF MY ROBE IN A SAFE DISTANCE I'LL FUCKING RUN AND KILL MYSELF!
>DADDY: OH NO I KILLED MY FUCKING IN JUSTIFIED SELF DEFENSE! TIME TO BLOW MYSELF UP DURR!
>This is just of of the many tragedies which has come to pass as the world falls intro turmoil
NO THAT WAS TWO FUCKING RETARDS
The combat was pure tedium, which is not enjoyable to me at all. The best strategy was to equip double shields on most characters (maybe not rudolph) and to rely on the ability of certain items to cast spells infinitely. You don't have to worry about resources running out in the dungeons as a result. Even if you ignore that tactic the combat is just bland, simple and extremely repetitive. The complete lack of boss battles aside from a mere three is also a huge issue.
The dungeons are quite complex and would be interesting to explore if they weren't full of boring random battles.
Nei.
