no, you're just remembering it wrong. you've always had to hit the buttons slightly faster than they appear on screen.

Been playing that stage for hours, and I don't think that's the case. Beaten it a few times by being so far off that it was a perfect 1/4 step slower, which gave me bonus points I assume, but it's been really inconsistent

I only played a PaRapper a couple times as a kid at a friend's house but I'm playing it now on the PS4 and honestly this game is like a fucking fever dream. There's something extremely unsettling about the cutscenes. Maybe it's the way the lines are poorly delivered combined with the intense colorful art style but it really trips me out
