Most VN companies didn't survive 2008, sadly. Hell, I'm pretty sure even Broccoli went under, and in the early 2000's, non-Shonen-Jump anime culture revolved around their Galaxy Angel and their one rival, Fate/Stay.

I'm making an Antoinette route/game that basically explores a little what-if scenario I've had in my head.
The mid 2000's had some pretty good VN's. So far, I've enjoyed:

In particular, I'd recommend Koihime Musou out of these VN's. The girls are great, the humor is fantastic, and the combat is fun for the first 30 hours or so.

Clannad is like a bazillion hours long, it was recommended but it wasn't babby's first VN.

They're definitely dead in the alternate universe where Neko isn't chosen. The financial crisis definitely fucked them, they got into drugs, Aeka was prostituted out to the Yakuza, and Kouhei was shot to death and dumped in Kyoto Bay

Fucking kill yourself, Antoinette Birch. Aeka's route killed me inside, especially that rooftop scene. Seeing Antoinette made me so fucking mad it's silly. I've never hated anyone that fiercely before. Real life bullying makes me legitimately sick. It's no surprise that Hanako was my favorite in Katawa Shoujo as well. The rooftop scene made me actually want to kill Antoinette and that Asian nigger.

Not all that many, but you do have Koihime Musou and Majikoi. The later gives you like 40 - 50 different choices and leaves your path through the mid game completely open.
Eh, I dropped the Koihime Musou anime because it wasn't enough like the game. It's one of my all time favorite VN's, easily top 10 out of the 50 or so that I've read through.
Man, thinking back this game is pretty uniuqe in being fucked up. Maybe my brain melted because of moeshit but YMK had some pretty serious themes, bullying, drug abuse and so on.

It's all the same. 9/10 times, it involves swordsmen. The least they could do is emulate a good school battle series like A Certain Magical Index.
Generic highschool stuff is fine. Hell, I even enjoyed Majikoi, and that was about as generic as you could get, aside from the BASED as fuck MC. But after I finished Ayakashibito, I got sick of school battle VNs. I couldn't even get out of the common route on Koiken Otome.
There was supposed to be a sister route and 1 more route, by the developer (the head honcho of the team, who writes pretty good shit in general) decided to get the game out ASAP and finish the routes later.

Hey, don't feel bad. The main idea's guy behind it also wrote Cross Channel, the highest rated VN translated to English, so he does have quite the renown. He's floating out there, somewhere.
However, I don't think he's ever said anything about returning to YMK. Maybe he doesn't have the rights to it, like how Kamiya can't make more Okami games because Capcom owns it. Maybe he can't secure the funding to write more routes. Maybe he just wants to forget it all.

My GF is President is still my favorite. I like comedy. I after that I tried out the games people were praising(the two above). Thank god I was smart enough to Torrent YMK instead of buying it.

I can't agree with your sentiment, since 2 of my 3 favorite VN's are pretty serious business, but the third one is known for its GOAT gameplay. That one being Kamidori Alchemy Meister, which is also one of my favorite /games/ of all time, not just my favorite /visual novel/.

Cross Channel is a completely different style of story with totally unlikeable characters, I would recommend against it if you're looking for something similar to YMK.
Read something like Crescendo and Symphonic Rain instead.

He's a major writer for WillPlus, which is a pretty decently sized VN conglomerate. I believe he also helped write Ayakashibito, which is a surprisingly good VN, despite its looks. Definitely gave me a lot of "muh feels" moments, especially when Russianbro dies protecting you.
The guy known for YMK helps most of the companies owned by Will(Plus) write, so if you're reading some of their VN's, you're likely reading his work.

Basically this Antoinette was fucked up, but all of her problems could've been fixed with copious amounts of MC dick, so in my ideal route you'd essentially solve the issue of Aeka being bullied from the other side - by healing Antoinette and showing her how to make nice, she rejects her slenderman patsy, and you, Antoinette and Aeka live as friends happily ever after.

No, but I thought I was just getting more of the same. I had played only fucking TWO VN's before YMK. I knew nothing about them except that the Clannad anime was based of a VN. It had drama, but was mostly humor and slice of life. I didn't expect all this fucking over the top drama.
So to sum it up, I didn't even think about there being different genre's. If I had grown up only reading and knowing about gag manga and then was handed some shojo shit I'd have the same reaction.
