I don't get the appeal for cyberpunk
You mean cyberpunk™
awe of technology meets rage at the rigged system
Did you know that cyberpunk™ was created by 12 slavs squatting in a hovel without being paid? How can Bioware even compete?

You're under arrest for violating international copyright laws.
it's all about contrast: utopian technology with dystopian society, new brave world that went horribly wrong
aren't there several things that coined the term cyberpunk before CD projekt red ?

get a load of this un-schway guy
>tfw no good curtains to block the neon lights.
My eyes hurt and I hate smelling cigarette smoke 24/7, I think this second hand smoke is frying my augments. That feel when no cyborg gf. I want to die.
so.. teenage angst: the genre?
What was this furry thing people say about? it's like people that used an animal cyberskin?
I don't see what's so special about it.

High tech, low life. That's cyberpunk.
the image you posted scifi.
this image is cyberpunk
Cyberpunk is a large genre user. It doesn't have to be just futuristic rainy Japanese cities at night time. Simon Stalenhag's universe is most definitely cyberpunk.
>Cyberpunk is a large genre user.
No, cyberpunk is a subgenre of sci-fi, which is a large genre. Not him btw.
You actually had it right at "high tech, low life" but your picture didn't show any of that. It shows high tech and low tech, but not low life using high tech.
no.
scifi is a large genre. his images are fantastic but they are scifi subgenre of their own. utilitarian scifi
I just hacked all of the computers
COME TOUCH ME LIKE I'M AN ORDINARY MAN
Why?
>fantasy shit in my cyberpunk
no thanks.
wish you could mod that shit out of shadowrun games. would be a great game otherwise
mad at the system
>but not low life using high tech
Midwest hillbillies with a fusion generator in their backyard doesn't count as using high tech?
>hating shadowrun
why are you so wrong chummer ?

are you trying to include at least one wrong thing in every post you make m80?
its not punk thats for sure
I fucking hate people like you.
>your picture didn't show any of that
His picture shows a guy with an old monitor standing next to a simple-looking house with an old car parked nearby with futuristic flying ships in background, this looks like technological advancement which isn't for everyone, which is classic cyberpunk really.
Because I am a computer hacker it's just what I do, just hack computers all the time.
relax. re-read my post.
>this looks like technological advancement which isn't for everyone, which is classic cyberpunk really.
no, that's real life
cyberpunk is when the lower class has access to high tech to do the dirty work for the upper class
>I fucking hate people like you.
aw poor you ;_;
>cyberpunk is when the lower class has access to high tech to do the dirty work for the upper class
no it's not, what the fuck are you talking about
>that's real life
cyberpunk is a more realistic/pessimistic take on sci-fi, yes
if you want some specific sci-fi-thing that is necessary to cyberpunk that would be information technology, I guess
not neon or rain though
kowloon is cyberpunk as fuck
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEANT CHUMMER
Ah good.
I was thinking it was another of those Sigma roleplayers doing yet another protest to try to force capcom into producing another good mega man game.

I love Simon S's art to absolute bits but I wouldn't quite call it cyberpunk. Way too much modern or less than modern stuff going on and still in use. Also, Volvos. Lots of Volvos.
>no it's not, what the fuck are you talking about
what are you?
"The future is already here, it's just not evenly distributed yet."- William Gibson
That's literally real life. And Gibson didn't write about real life, he wrote about the future. Just because high technology exists in a world in which there are homeless bums doesn't mean it's cyberpunk. If that homeless bum gets access to tech and uses it to fight the "high life" (usually corporations, which are usually located in urban areas), yeah, that's cyberpunk. Because the punk part is about the powerless rebelling against the powerful. It's literally in the word cyberpunk.
>not neon or rain though
I agree, I didn't post that picture. But it's 2 steps closer to the central theme than and is, simply because it addresses the "powerful" entity targeted by the rebellion, which is required for the "punk" word.
Just think it through. A homeless bum who isn't modified to be a cyborg stands no chance against a megacorp. A man in a hillbilly shack who doesn't know how to hack, much less code, stands no chance against a megacorp. You don't rebel unless you think you have a chance, and you _gain_ that chance by asymmetrically using the megacorp's tools against it: technology. That is why "low life" needs to be the ones using "high tech," not simply co-existing beside it.
This is the clearest I can explain it. If you don't get it, you don't get it
Was*
That place is no more.

You wouldn't, you were born after the year 2000. Cyberpunk leveraged the 70s-80s world's fear of the technological and industrial supremacy Japan wielded at the time.
...
Well I actually just let you think you hacked into my computer so I could get into your mainframe, you're actually logged onto my shell server, thanks for falling into my trick
Acording to your defunition Ghost in the Shell wouldn't be cyberpunk

HEY Sup Forums I'M TOO FUCKING STUPID TO DISCOVER SHIT ON MY OWN, RECOMMEND ME SOME CYBERPUNK SHIT TO BUY ON STEAM!
Apart from Deus Ex/HR/MD and Technobabylon. And Shadowrun Returns/DF/HK.
Is Judge Dredd cyberpunk or just futuristic dystopia?
>2017
>doesn't play Netrunner
...
Bartender, I'll have a Mars Blast.
nu-kowloon is bringing it back though
woah nigga we don't want to get sued
you think I would fall for such an obvious trap, I had you think you were tricking me to access my mainframe when I logged into your shell server but my mainframe was actually my own shell server and I'm using it to infect you with trojans so I can find your root IP address and really hack your actual mainframe
Future dystopia.
Gibson sure as hell didn't write about meaningful rebellion against the corporations. In Neuromancer, corporations having power is the status quo, it's something characters accept because it's not realistic to try and change that. You can steal from them (until they find you and fuck you over), but that's not rebellion, that's the opposite - finding your niche in the world. The cyberpunk is a term that came from a different story, anyway.
Case is like the most apathetic hero of a story ever. He just wants to get high, man, and hack stuff.
Sup Forums this thing calling itself Wintermute is trying to tell me to do things. Help?
Are you fucking 80? Just relax and give it a few years. We went from the piece of shit Virtual Boy in 1995 to playing SUPERHOT on Oculus with hand controllers in 2016.
Technology will advance much faster comparatively now that we have multiple big baseboards to build off of, as long as it gets funding VR is going to improve pretty quickly. I'd say VR2.0 around 2022-2025
Fight the establishment, get to spend all day in virtual Sup Forums with other Anons, trick yourself out with augmentation and a metal chassis if you want. Or just be a hunk of brain on a vat with wires plugged into it running a huge multi-billion dollar company that ruins the lives of millions.
What's not to love?
The Laughing Man is quite literally a low life hacker who uses his skills to terrorize corporations into revealing their role in suppressing a cheap cure to cyberization disease
Asymmetrical warfare against corps.
...
It's called Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous
GitS is usually considered post-cyberpunk because the characters aren't simply outsiders, they actively work for the system. But it's all subgenres, anyway.
Hello! i am sigma, and i am in every single computer on the planet!
Capcom, you have 24 hours to announce a non-mobile, non-open world, non-pachinko, non-vr movie, non-holocard, non-bodymove, that is not remake of Mega man X7 Mega man game or all the automatons up to level 10 will come at your headquarters and peacefully protest as law 210.21.
...
>all these cables and wires in the future
Stop
Wires are going away entirely within the next 15 years, not just for internet but for everything data transfer. Your motherboard's PCI bus has less transfer rate, and only negligibly lower transfer latency (on the order of nanoseconds lower) than wireless tech that's already a decade old.
silicon.co.uk
Plus wires are narratively boring. In a good cyberpunk setting data should have its own agency, not be reliant on a human hand to shepherd it to where it can and can not go.

Mirrors Edge Catalyst, pirate or wait for a sale
It's surprisingly cyberpunk as fuck
How are you so dense to think I wouldn't install virus protection onto my own shell to stop such a basic Trojan attack? Even if you did manage to make it through my virus protection you still need to make it through my firewalls and EVEN IF you manage to make it through that you would only get access to the IP address of my proxy website and hack them instead, while you were wasting your time with your Trojan attack I've already managed to run ipconfig on that very same Trojan file and backtrace the IP address to your actual PC, all of this was just a cleaver plan to have you divulge your real plans and infect me with a Trojan which I could use to my advantage.

Cyberpunk sabotaged itself as a genre by having ugliness (ugly characters mainly) be one of its main tenets
People literally just don't want to look at cyberpunk settings because everyone is ugly for some reason
