they arent

Counterpoint: Minecraft

they are

Because there is no one there to muddle the idea down, thus allowing full creativity.
Not every game made by one person is good though. Cave Story is an outlier in fact, being amazing.
Minecraft is a good game. It just has some issues that it got in updates, most notably hunger.

Minecraft is an ingenious game though.

We obviously don't like it because we're not the demographic. If we were both between the ages of 9-12 it would be the best game ever made.

>Why are games developed by one person so good?
>posts a game developed by one person that isn't so good

Any other examples beside Cave Story?
I'm curious now.

>pixel hasn't had the rights to his own game since Nicalis took it from him

feels bad man

>those two green pixels on original Quote's head
I can never unsee it as a nose and the left eye as sideburns, fuck me.

They usually aren't. Cave Story and RollerCoaster Tycoon are just exceptions.

How can you deny that games like stardew valley and even undertale have a more consistent atmosphere than the latest AAA clone?

Noitu Love: Devolution
Braid
Undertale
Knytt series

clear artistic direction.

One man games tend to be pretty good in regards to story and theme, not so good in art or gameplay, and occasionally awful music or amazing music, but rarely just mediocre music.

Stardew valley is amazing. Penny best grill

stardew valley, undertale, lone survivor, minecraft, and probably more that I've never heard of.

Dwarf Fortress

When a game made by one person is made, it tends to be good especially if they didn't get any outside help and did it purely off of free time and their own expense. You can tell a lot about a developer if he's willing to do a passion project and it comes out well, they become pretty credible since these days every indie dev uses Kickstarter. But, luck also plays a big part, as the timing of when a game comes out is key. Such as when there is a lack of a certain genre and so on.

Undertale had about 3 others help Toby with characters and artwork.

Even when you know the correct way to see it, it looks like Quote's left eye is slightly bigger than his right eye.

Legit question and not a critique: has there ever been a good game made by one developer that wasn't designed/inspired by another game?

Think about it: Undertale and LISA was inspired by Earthbound, Stardew Valley was inspired by Harvest Moon, etc. I can't think of any besides Cavestory and Minecraft that were completely original ideas.

Nicalis is fucking scum. Not only did they steal it from him by confusing him with English (literally), they now throw Cave Story characters in every other game they publish like 1001 Spikes, which is a good game from a good developer but FUCK Nicalis is garbage.

>ages of 9-12
Absolutely true, my nephew loves the fuck out of it. I guess its this generation legos.

>noitu love
My nigger. Underrated game.

>We obviously don't like it because we're not the demographic.
What are you talking about, we love minecraft.
Well we used to but the hunger update happened.

Axiom Verge too. It's p. good.

>steal it from him by confusing him with English (literally)

This dude ain't wrong

Small team is the best way to go, end up with stuff like Shovel Knight.

Autism.
They are mostly niche interests and made out of dissatisfaction. Autistic interest leads to pursuit of perfection that will speak to other members of said niche.

I was about to post that.
All these "great" games are HEAVILY inspired by some other.

The only game I can think of that was really original and made by a couple devs was E.Y.Ǝ

Minecraft was based on Infinifactory

But Rollercoaster Tycoon was original I think

Games made by one person that aren't good don't get recognition.

cavestory has overt metroid references

Knytt Stories is fucking great. I wish I could git gud at it's level maker.

*infiniminer

Iji.

They're not. The sweetspot is between 4 to 10 people. Still small enough to have focus and artistic drive, but big enough to be able to put out anything of value at a reasonable time table.

>minecraft
>developed by one person
I'm considering that I am incorrect considering no one else has said anything, but was Minecraft really developed by one person? Maybe at the very beginning of Alpha, but for all time after that, surely it has been a team effort? They do indeed have a team.

the minecraft hate on Sup Forums kept increasing with the price

what a coincidence!

That's the problem with faggots wanting "originality", it's such a vague term that you could call every single game inspired by others unless it goes full crazy like EYE

I still have hundreds of Knytt Stories levels dating way back to 2007-2008 on my old HHDs.
I also have a good two dozen levels I made at various stages of completion. All but 2-3 have never been seen by anyone but me.
...
God, I miss middle school.

To be fair, every single piece of media takes inspiration from previous media to a certain degree.

I find that Dwarf Fortress is a fairly good answer, though.

Minecraft died in late 2010. No "hunger update" bullshit, newfag.

maybe 's explanation. Barrone began making Stardew to port harvest moon to pc

They are consistent and coherent. It's one guy doing everything so from OST to story and gameplay its all following one person's idea. Look at Lisa Painful rpg, it engaged me more with it's story and setting than any recent AAA game that have so much bullshit they lose a track of their story and what actually supposed to happen.

I don't understand. They didn't steal it from him; he gets money every time someone purchases the game. Nicalis putting Cave Story characters in other games isn't a bad thing. It gives CS more exposure.

>not spending two years making a level that's several hours long
baka

KS isn't really my favorite of Nifflas' lineup, but the level editor is an amazing tool, and the various extensions to it make it possible to make levels far beyond the scope of the original.

passion.

All those suck...

And that's exactly what we're doing, anything else?

All those Avernum and Geneforge remakes are made by one guy, right?

Because it retains a creative vision. The problem is its a ridiculous amount of work, and there's potential for it to be unpolished in a lot of places, but Pixel kept it short, simple, and sweet.

Notch was fucking terrible at game design and it's one of the few times I'm glad something got handed off to a giant corporate entity. Mostly because he confused "really tedious and annoying" with "actually challenging".

I don't think so

>pic related

my biggest one is decently sized, though.
still nothing compared to what I had planned.

Nope. It was still alive and thriving in late 2010. Did you forget that Sup Forums would never shut the fuck up about the Halloween update, newfag?

Fez was a good game if you realized it wasn't a platformer.

The people who have the smarts to do so tend to not be sjw shits from neogaf.

>braid
>Jonathan blow
>artist
>musician
>1 person

but all of the good harvest moon games can be easily emulated on even shit-tier PCs...

Updates slowed to a crawl and Notch became a massive lazy lardass.
Besides, "late 2010" as the death date is because that's around the time Minecraft exploded in popularity and Notch became massively rich without actually coming near to finishing his game.

Because a project developed by one person is their own clear vision. Even if the execution is shit (See: Undertale) it's still nothing but their pure, unfiltered vision. It's why most big blockbuster movies and games are complete garbage, because visions are tampered by higher ups.

Are you trying to imply that every single video game made by more than one person is made by "sjw shits from neogaf"?

fez wasnt made by 1 person, you idiots

For the same reason why countries appoint one president/prime minister to make decisions about their future, and corporations appoint one CEO to do the same

An undertaking is more coherent and more 'risky' if there's only one person at its head. Humans don't work well as parallel computers.

This is just an analogy but I remember when the nether was introduced he was still the sole creator

But Phil didn't make Fez by himself

How did this rumor start and is there any evidence to support it?

Probably about a third the size of mine (keeping in mind that another hundred or so screens are outside of this screenshot). Was pretty proud of finishing this, especially since the amount of content exceeded my plans by a pretty wide margin.

assumption
no in fact theres evidence in the thread proving its wrong

link?

Fair enough, but his influence on the dialogue and music is what made the game popular in the first place

Because you only pay attention to good ones since they have little to no marketing.

nifflas.lpchip.nl/index.php?topic=6814.0

You'll need to download a KS mod called KS+ as well, since the level uses a ton of features that are exclusive to that mod.

Braid was made by 3 people.

Toby got a lot of help from Temmie, ggdg and a few other artists for Undertale.

Not sure about Knytt.

Noitu Love actually was made by 1 person, so I'll give you that.

>a few othre artists
Kickstarter backers dont really count

For Knytt, Knytt Stories, and Knytt Underground, the gameplay's entirely made by Nifflas, but he shares some of the workload of graphics and sound with others.

consistent vision

The majority of them are terrible.
>but [list of less than 10 games]
You and I know there are tons of shitty indies/dojinsoft.

Read the art book. Temmie made several enemy/boss sprites and a few backgrounds. Ggdg did the backround going from the hotel to the core. Someone else did the background for the lava area and the core, and someone else made the Flowey boss fight art.

That's like, four or five artists.

>The majority of them are terrible.
That's just media in general.
