I've started playing enemy unknown for the first time a few months ago.
I was really enjoying it at first but the difficulty curve really threw me off after a while. You end up having to play super defensive, which is fine, but then they add civilians to save or other elements to force you to rush things.
Then it becomes trial and error and you redo the same map again and again, learning the spawn positions of the aliens by trial and error. I haven't touched the game in a while now. Maybe I'm just bad.
What tech did you get to? Did you get plasma weapons yet? Those makers the game way easier
VIGILO CONFIDO
PURGE THE XENO SCUM
Why is killing enemies with Overwatch feel so satisfying even though you didn't do shit?
Because it shows that your slightly defensive plan pulled through.
there is no trial and error with the civilians or spawn positions, it is legitimately random chance.
civilians in particular just have a chance to randomly die if you can't see them regardless if there are any aliens active to attack them
No I did not, keeping that in mind if I decide to continue playing the game. There are so many researches to be done, it's kind of hard to know what to prioritize when you're playing blind.
Well, the randomness does lead to trial and error in my experience. Like uncovering new enemies while moving around a corner, only to immediately get reckt because they immediately attack you.
In general this mechanism of having the enemies "come alive" when you uncover them makes little sense and means that the game incites you to play super defensively without scouting ahead. Normally in strategy games discovering the layout of the level gives you a big advantage but in XCOM it's not worth the risk. And it increases the trial and error becomes knowing the position of the spawn points becomes a lot more critical if you want to manage the enemy's threat.
I think it would make more sense if all the enemies were active all the time and you had an actual advantage if you discover them first. That would make more sense IMO. You might even do "stealth" runs where you kill the enemies before they have the time to alert the others etc...
XCOM 2
...
I know what you mean about triggering the enemies (they're called pods). To counter that, you want to move your soldiers one action point at a time. That way if a pod activates you can move your soldiers to better cover, put them on OW, or fire

>in XCOM 2 you are literally playing as ISIS
