Which do you prefer, action combat or turn based combat?
Which do you prefer, action combat or turn based combat?
Why not both?
Nothing tops Dragon's Dogma's combat as an ARPG
Turn-based combat has a lot of flavor
It doesn't matter as long as it's done well. Thing is, most turn based combat I've seen hasn't been done well. So, if I had to go on the safe side, I'd choose real time combat
I prefer action. Turn based is great as long as there's some strategy involved.
Turn based is obsolete
This.
But Vagrabr Story and FFXII have a mix of both by having you move and attack/defend on a turn/time based pattern that pleases me.
More devs should look into that so the grnre can evolve a bit more. It's a good mix of the two.
>FFXII
>Fun gameplay
No, X was the peak.
I personally enjoy it. My opinion isn't universal, user. Have you tried Vagrant Story?
Action Based combat by far. Most turn based combat is trash.
I prefer Persona combat to Dragon's Dogma combat
I prefer Dark Souls combat to Persona combat
action is great when it's done well, but turn based is tried and true
I like both, it's the shitty hybrids and QTE games i hate. Modern FF is one of the best examples of what i hate
Depends on what I'm playing.
I love Monster Hunter style combat in those games. But in JRPGs I enjoy turn based a lot.
desu i cant see why anyone would play turn based.
Dragons Dogma has better combat tham souls though
>tried and true
it's really not. You're saying it as if all turn based combat is good. that's not true. Almost every jrpg fucks up turn based combat really badly
>Nothing tops Dragon's Dogma's combat as an ARPG
Try Toukiden 2, shame that everything else in it is lame. People compare it to Monster Hunter but it feels like a direct 1-1 knockoff of Dragons Dogma.
FFX-2 was a bad game in most aspects, but the combat was the pinnacle of JRPG combat
Prove me wrong
>the pinnacle of JRPG combat
it's dark souls
Id say it was definitely more fun but I dont think I can say it was better. The game becomes far too easy past a point where the combat just becomes button mashing, where you arent even paying attention to what enemies are doing in Souls games its consistently good and requires player agency, DD is just fun.
Action games nearly 100% of the time.
The only time it's not is when you're comparing fucking Batman or Assassin's Creed tier combat to an sRPG, great turn-based games.
For your typical hyper-cinematic turn-based jRPG - yes there's exceptions hence "typical" - nah. Done with that. Don't need any more of that in my life.
Souls is a simplified action games with RPG mechanics. The combat's based around melee first and foremost, which is why magic is either too strong or too weak in all the games
Dragon's Dogma is more of a traditional RPG
>Turn-based combat
it's almost dinosour
only SMT games and Persona have it
Completely agreed!
Turn-based games make a lot more sense on handhelds, I think, because the self-pacing seems to go hand-in-hand with playing for a few minutes here and there, checking the oven, sitting on the porch and smoking a Cuban cigar while sipping on a Madeira against the setting sun
Or lying in bed after your girl's fallen asleep, watching/listening to a Ken Burns series; when you feel the droop coming on you can just close the lid or hit sleep and drift off into menu-driven dreams
Turn-based has its place. It's cozy. But it rarely makes for a good game in game terms
I like both, but not mixing them.
I prefer good action based combat and good turn based combat.
Tactical Real-time with ticks and pauses.
Dragon Age: Origins was the pinnacle of gameplay. Fight me!
