You should do side quests, don't listen to that other dumbass. But if you're stuck on one or don't feel like doing it it's fine to leave it, you can come back to it later.
You replay the game multiple times to get different endings but each playthrough is different. Especially the third time. Some people don't like or don't care for second playthrough but third is completely different and makes up for everything.
