Depends on the series really and if the stories are related, I generally try to start from the beginning or go back and player older games eventually if its a possibility. If its a series like Trails in the Sky or some sort of direct sequel than yes your absolutely right skipping games is retarded.

This usually is not that big of a deal but I dare you to go back and play through something like Fire Emblem 1 and not say this. Its extremely archaic it does not even give you basic info in some cases like weapon stats. No joke I had to keep a notepad up with weapon stats on it until I memorized most of them. The gameplay is agonizingly slow, I played about the first 5 chapters before I started playing at 2x speed which made it much more bearable and eventually finished it.

Thats bullshit and you know it Nier: Automata sold over 1 million copies with only about 1/4th of that being on PC. On PS4 alone Automata sold well above what Nier did meaning there are a ton of people who never played Nier that bought Automata.

Can the hottest and new title in a series not be a good jumping off point into the earlier games? I don't know how many times I tried a new game, then found myself interested in going back to the older ones to get more out of the series. I feel it works both ways, and forcing someone to play a thing they may not know they like before playing what they're excited about sounds counterproductive.

It sucks when a fanbase grows to a point where only the loudest and most vocal members are heard and represented as the voice of those who like the series, I will admit. The only real solution is to put your head down and talk with people who appreciate the media like you do until the fad blows over and people move onto the next thing. With the amount of money that's thrown into marketing and keeping people excited for the new and shiny pieces of media doesn't help and won't for a long time, but you don't have to be washed away with everyone else. Money rules many things, unfortunately, and mass-market media is certainly one of those things.
It's perfectly fine to skip any game in the SMT franchise because none of them are connected in any way, shape or form. Unless you're playing DDS or Raidou, in that case, you can't chose one game to play over the other because those two games are connected to each other. So it's fine to skip straight to Persona 5 because its the best in the series so far.
I skipped Raidou 1 and went straight to Raidou 2 because the gameplay is significantly better. Get bent faggot.
