If nothing else it made me realize how utterly shite my reflexes are.

Been playing Rune Factory Frontier again and I remembered how treacherous the pacing is. Everything is too slow

Yeah the handheld RF games really spoil you with being able to stack items on your head, and general movement and area transitions are just way faster.

Personally I think going back to RF3 would be hard too, since you can't hoard

They improve with each game, so some people suggest to start at 1 and move up to 4

But 3 and 4 are by far the highlights of the series.

Always felt like RF3 had by far the most annoying girls since their archetypes were exaggerated to the points of ludicrous

I made this mod for RFF and then didn't play the game.

you make a good point. I do feel their designs are the best overall and they're generally memorable girls. Can't say I can remember many of the girls from earlier games except that bitch with the eye patch and the girl who lived in a temple wew I liked that

First one starts pretty slow and has a lot of stuff gated by how far you into the game.
For example you can't get anything above iron and copper until fall.
You can't get a sheep until summer. You can't get a dog until summer year 2.
I still like it a lot and i guess they did it like that to not overburden newcomers with all those gameplay mechanics.
But if you are already familiar with the series it's a pain in the ass.
Still recommend if you don't mind the game only really opening up after 20+ hours.

Can't say much about trio of towns because yuropoor. But apparently it's a lot better and faster in that regard. maybe someone else can elaborate,

the town is perfectly fine, has by far the most lines, events, and character development (not much, by still good by RF standards)

and, yeah, they pandered to fujoshi, who cares? the male characters are good, anyway. i'm not sure why you would think that fujoshi would somehow lower waifu quality, when the cast is actually more consistent in terms of quality compared to previous games, which typically had 4-5 good characters and shit everything else. RF4's characters might seem weaker on the surface, but thanks to the surplus of lines and events they really do get much better over time.

this isn't to mention the various amounts of gameplay optimizations, shit tons more storage space for hoarding, a lot more field space, being able to almost completely customize your house, BGM customization, all the various misc orders that you can do to customize your game, HUD, and so on, the much larger variety in dungeons, etc. etc. etc.

the only downsides was the RNG bullshit for dating as well as one particular event.

i honestly don't know how some people can't acknowledge RF4 as the best in the series. "muh waifus" doesn't really cut it

I care because there was a drop in the quality of the waifus. The game had a lot of improvements, but that was one area where it suffered. Sadly, fujoshits make bank for both SoS/HM and RF.
I also have one more complaint, though not strictly related to RF4: the MCs are getting girlier and girlier every entry in both series. They hardly look like farmers at this point. It's disgusting.

Women who already played the other games just fine. Even my Aunt who has played Harvest Moon since the beginning didn't like 4 for the same reasons as me.

there's no correlation there, really. you can only really make an argument for how the previous games had a larger pool, and, therefore, you had a greater chance of liking someone out of that pool. RF4 just lowered the pool size, but not the quality.

i can easily point out how RF3 had maybe 3-5 girls that were any good, honestly. 5 is pushing it. well, this is mostly very subjective, but i literally only hear people talk about Raven, Sofia, Carmen, Pia, and Rainbow. and it's usually just about Raven, Sofia, and Pia most of the time. so, really, that's quite a padded heroine selection. now, sure, you could probably say that a larger quantity doesn't really hurt the game, and i would agree, but there was an opportunity with the studio, who was already having a lot of financial issues at the time, to make money off of the fujoshit fanbase. and they did. it was the best selling RF (but apparently still not good enough)

but i really don't think the waifus suffered from it, overall. each of the girls in RF4 were memorable for me, even if none of them were my favorite girls in the series. but in all of the other RF games i can very easily name at least a handful that were completely forgettable.

if i had to be hard on RF4's waifus, it's that they probably had the least interesting designs. but i still don't think any of them were bad except Saber. (best RF design is Yue, in my opinion)

this is true, Raguna is really the only one that looks like and dresses like a dude, and he still has that disgusting girly blush.

i do think that Lest, apart from his design, was the least 'girly' overall, at least in terms of personality. considerably more snarky and his voice actor was actually a dude (Raguna has an incredibly girly voice, because his VA was literally a chick. same with Micah, btw)

There's really a point where you need to drop realism in favor for quality. You might as well not even marry her, oh, and you get NTR'd by magic and can't even make her pregnant yourself.

Along with improvements to gameplay, they made the waifus have more depth. If a next game would have more bachelorettes I think more people would agree the quality was improving. In this game I was going to date only Amber and Xiao, but I can't resist the urge to rape an elf in a skintight see-through dress. Just look at this navel.

I don't think Lest is that girly. Apart from long hair, he's just tidy. They thought he was a prince after all. Also, everyone forgets Aden.

Meg was probably my favorite overall, but I honestly can't resist onee-chan types at all

I was very, very pleasantly surprised that she did. Partying up in RF4 was so much better overall.

Just reel it on first bite. It works half the time, and if it doesn't, you're grinding your fishing skill anyway.
