You don't need to play in Japanese to know what honorifics are, playing with Jap voices and English sub will still make it immediately obvious if you're not completely weeb-illiterate.

Really, even if you rationalize it as "oh they changed it because the JP actor died", the fact that he isn't friendly, welcoming and supportive is so on the nose it's impossible to ignore. The guy's whole thing is he looks creepy but is probably the most supportive and comforting person you could ever meet. When you have a game about everyone treating you like shit, having the spirit guide not facilitate a contrasting role is a dead ass giveaway that something's wrong.
