I always figured the dialogue options that dodged saying your friend was because he was one of the only guys that not only knew you were the Phantom Thief, but also that he pretty much had proof due to all of your mementos quests being given by him. I really hope he shows up in the inevitable animation versions, the scenes with the side social links in the Persona 4 animation were the best parts

Honestly, I'm surprised how much people hate him. He lets the power go to his head, but he eventually calms the fuck down and improves from it and reflects from it. I mean fuck, might as well hate a majority of Social Links/Confidants (if not nearly all of them with the rare exception here and there), because you're the one who usually helps/supports them in some way with their issues and problems. It's not like he asked to be treated like shit and come out crazier because of it, and he's part of the reason the Phantom Thieves got supported in general.
